Fair play on its relative distance from the station though. I don't live in town either, but am independently mobile (bicycle), so such things don't occur to me.

Rockers

krakow, Thursday, 19 August 2010 10:15 (thirteen years ago) link

I didn't know about this shared Mono hatred! It's always seemed fine to me, although I've never been when its role is a proper pub rather than a concert venue or an eatery. But I am intuitively disinclined from using it as a pub, whereas I do like Stereo for that.

while I'm here I'll note for those interested that having passed through the Union Street Fopp today, their current book selection is pretty good - I got 'The House That Trane Built' for £4, 'Modulations: A History of Electronic Music' for £3, the Thurston Moore / Byron Coley No Wave book for £3, Bob Dylan's 'Chronicles Volume 1' for £2, and the lovely 'Horizons Touched: The Music of ECM' for £10, among other less interesting things.

Mogwai play Stereo next Sunday 29th August!

Tickets onsale tomorrow morning 11am in person from Monorail or online from Ticketmaster (link is currently non-working).

Mogwai say:

Glasgow - Stereo 29th August

We are playing a show next Sunday August 29th at Stereo in Glasgow. Moon Unit are playing too. Doors are at 8pm. Tickets will be available online tomorrow morning at 11am here . They will also be available in person from Monorail records at 11am tomorrow. Tickets are £10 and proceeds will be going to Lanarkshire Cancer Trust and aid to the victims of the floods in Pakistan.

I could pretty much explode with excitement at the prospect of seeing them at such a tiny venue!

OMG (and I've just made not-get-out-of-able plans for next Sunday, bah).

Local knowledge! Would a gig at the 02 on a schoolnight Monday finish early enough to dash down the hill and be on a 23:40 train back to London?

Teddybears.SHTML (sic), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 10:48 (thirteen years ago) link

I think it's worth phoning them to make sure but the couple of times I've been there I've been out just after 23:00 which is enough time to walk to Central.

"down the hill"? Do you mean ABC2? O2 is pretty much level with Central on the other side of the river.

a harshbuzz to my manpain (onimo), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 10:56 (thirteen years ago) link

The ABC is an O2 venue now as well.

ailsa, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 11:26 (thirteen years ago) link

I can't remember what time you get out, but I can't imagine it would be after 11, and it shouldn't take more than 15 minutes to get down to Central from there.

ailsa, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 11:27 (thirteen years ago) link

The ABC is an O2 venue now as well.

ah ok that explains it

a harshbuzz to my manpain (onimo), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 11:44 (thirteen years ago) link

sic: yes, the gig will be all finished by 12:00.

a cankle of rads (Gukbe), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 14:00 (thirteen years ago) link

23:00, i meant.

a cankle of rads (Gukbe), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 14:00 (thirteen years ago) link

Definitely finished by 11pm, yes. Headline band probably on at 9pm.

krakow, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 18:56 (thirteen years ago) link

Meanwhile, 45p shots all round. Cheers!

Madchen, Thursday, 2 September 2010 12:32 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, would be brilliant if that actually happened :-) Instead I'm now going to pay about a fiver for a £3.50 bottle of wine out of Tesco, and all the menko Weston's Organic Cider drinkers are going to be bankrupt.

it gets a thumbs up from me.

jed_, Thursday, 2 September 2010 21:34 (thirteen years ago) link

Do we have weekend or Monday drink plans? No, of course we don't, we're Glasgow and we don't do FAPs.

ailsa, Thursday, 2 September 2010 23:26 (thirteen years ago) link

poo, I'm getting in on Sunday arvo. esp poo as I've seen them together once and Vito solo twice!

Monday in the Pot Still, whenever people can get away from work? duck off early, tell 'em it's to go drinking with people from the interwebs - that should work, right?

jed I should be in McSorleys before Hung Up, will ilxmail you my phone #.

Teddybears.SHTML (sic), Friday, 3 September 2010 00:57 (thirteen years ago) link

Six hours backwards on a train, with no window, and both reading lights broken. Eat my scrote, Branson.

Teddybears.SHTML (sic), Sunday, 5 September 2010 11:06 (thirteen years ago) link

Ouch, been there. The most irritating thing is that it's just because they've installed the seats wrong - there's a luggage rack half-a-dozen rows in front that gets the window that should be yours.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 5 September 2010 11:49 (thirteen years ago) link

So who's going to the Pot Still tomorrow then?

ailsa, Sunday, 5 September 2010 19:27 (thirteen years ago) link

I can't make it along tonight, unfortunately - I've fucked up my shoulder playing badminton. Was hoping it would be better by now, but I've woken this morning in absolute agony - gonna have to go for some physio asap.

Sorry to have missed you this time round, Sic - safe travels.

Ward Fowler, Monday, 6 September 2010 06:43 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm going to come along to the Pot Still straight after work, so about 6pm, then head up to the ABC about 7pm to catch the delectable Zola Jesus before Fever Ray.

krakow, Monday, 6 September 2010 07:59 (thirteen years ago) link

Teddybears.SHTML (sic), Monday, 6 September 2010 08:52 (thirteen years ago) link

anyone else? has grimly been poked abt this?

Teddybears.SHTML (sic), Monday, 6 September 2010 14:01 (thirteen years ago) link

I've lost his phone number and am a social-network-free zone at work, anyone else able to oblige?

Am not actually sure I'll make it myself, tbh, but I'll do my very bestest.

ailsa, Monday, 6 September 2010 14:19 (thirteen years ago) link

Ha ha, never change, Glasgow.

Teddybears.SHTML (sic), Monday, 6 September 2010 14:41 (thirteen years ago) link

I work in the middle of the countryside! City centre working people have no excuse though (except Ward, he has a good excuse).

ailsa, Monday, 6 September 2010 14:42 (thirteen years ago) link

Totally late to thread, and a total stranger, but I can't recommend the five tapas for £10 deal in Stereo on a Monday enough. I've never been to the Pot Still, I must try it.

Enjoy Fever Ray, those of you going, and try not get too wound up by the over-enthusiastic security staff at the o2 ABC...

get the fuck out of my mouth (boxedjoy), Monday, 6 September 2010 16:59 (thirteen years ago) link

it was me and krakow with sic and his mates. v. nice to meet them & no, i didn't get my ass in gear to go out last night.

earlier on today i was in town with my mum heading to john lewis along sauchihall street. just outside bhs there were some buskers playing with quite a full set up - drums, bass guitar and a singer - the singer was miked through an amp. just as i was approaching they were playing radiohead's "creep" and the singer was singing that line "i wish i was special/ you're so fucking special" and he actually sang "fucking special" which i instantly took exception to. does thom yorke sing "fucking special" twice in the song? because this singer did. it made me feel a bit depressed to hear that sung in public.

well, i got a bit riled up about it, maybe too much so. once they had finished the song i went up to the guy who was singing and told him that i really thought he shouldn't sing "fucking" on a public street (i said "the f word" even though i normally wouldn't) with families and children and whatever else walking up and down and the guy and the rest of the "band" just stared at me like i was mental, which got me even more riled up so i asked the guy if he thought that was acceptable. they all just stared at me til the guitar guy said "noted" very sarcastically and i walked away feeling like a mad person. but i think i was right to confront the guy no? i would never do that sort of thing but i don't think it was right to sing the f word.

the end.

jed_, Monday, 6 September 2010 19:18 (thirteen years ago) link

In the original version of the song he only says 'fucking' and never 'very'.

One of the things I like about Britain is the rather cavalier attitude towards language in public places. It's refreshing and nice.

a cankle of rads (Gukbe), Monday, 6 September 2010 19:26 (thirteen years ago) link

Sorry I never made it out, had some stuff to do on the way home from work and by the time I got a bus into town it would have been nearer seven by the time I got in, just in time to have a beer and turn round and go home again.

ailsa, Monday, 6 September 2010 19:36 (thirteen years ago) link

That's great jed and you were right, if for no other reason than if swearing in public doesn't attract disapproval, what do you do when you really want to let rip. Also because that song is such a lame example of it. I sometimes want to do stuff like that but have no idea how to tick kids off, even the ones who were pulling my neighbour's fence apart last week. Sorry it didn't really work out.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 6 September 2010 19:43 (thirteen years ago) link

Very pleased to have FAP'd with the select few.
