i guess i live/work in a place where we're bombarded with that stuff, so my reaction is negative. dwell is an alright mag, but i can't help but have a sour taste in my mouth after hearing that the dude is editor-in-chief there. maybe this isn't completely justified, but surely he kept that little tidbit of info under wraps for a while for a reason

i'm sure he'd prefer just making music for a living. who the fuck cares what he does to pay the bills. jesus christ.

Surely it's kind of impressive that he can be editor-in-chief of a magazine while also working on both Hatchback and Windsurf material. He's effectively had two albums come out on top of one another. I can't imagine juggling that much stuff at once.

i always thought print/web design was pretty much a prerequisite for making electronic music. it's the fact that he's the editor-in-chief that's so surprising. dwell has a lot of influence/readership, and this guy clearly has some serious time-management skills. i see that he's mentioned this in interviews before, clearly i was wrong about him keeping things 'under wraps'. i wasn't saying that his job detracts from the music, simply pointing out that the press could be milking this way more than they are-- which is nice, actually.

i know my reactions are largely personal and based on my own prejudices/kneejerk-backlash-impulses, but surely some overzealous reviewer would've come along and make them anyways. i should know better than to play devil's advocate around here anyhow...

I didn't know he was the editor of Dwell untill he came and DJ'd Dazzle Ships, though I didn't know his music much before either. He showed up with a Dwell bag and was like "i'm in town for some meetings for Dwell" and I was like "oh cool, you work for Dwell?" and he was like "I'M THE FUCKING EDITOR IN CHIEF!"

Just kidding. He said "I'm the editor" and I said "cool, my mom bought me a subscription."

It's definitely not arch. porn...if it was it'd have more pictures and less text. I like it, but I also used to read Wallpaper and Nest.

And yes, in my experience everybody who works in graphics in any capacity whatsover is also a DJ or producer of electronic music.

What I don't get with him is the time issue...I freelance and have to take entire weeks off just to make a mix CD for my girlfriend.

i was thinking just in terms of "soft rock disco", but yeah, the range of that hatchback album is formidable

The Aeroplane remix of Grace Jones' "Williams Blood" is just lovely, albeit a bit LOL AEROPLANE.

havent heard the whole Hatchback record but I can't think of many tracks out of this scene that are better than "White Diamond" .... rmx of that one is my fave on Nu-Balearica

'White Diamond' is just so perfect, the airy light euphoria makes me feel like I'm floating. Yesterday it struck me just how much White Diamond reminds me of Orbital's Belfast, which has (or at least had, but I don't think it's changed) the same effect on me.

Discovered yesterday that the Hatchback album is really good for wandering round the Natural History Museum in London.

i'll second sanfran's recommendation for the claremont 56 'originals' compilation by moonboots and balearic mike. there are some quirky JAMS on that one.

I was wondering, does there exist anything like Sad Balearic? Music like melancholy Superpitcher, Pantha Du Prince or Lawrence but in the Balearic-vein? Music that contains that airy Balearic feel, but tends not towards euphoria but to melancholy?

haven't heard that one psych care to share? Permanent vacation is one of my favorite labels of the year. the bostropeso peo 12" is great + woolfy vs. projections + 40 thieves + panthers holyghost remix + dolle jolle, just incredible.
