Well, I went to youtube and found the video immediately following the show to see if she was indeed a real thing. That only made it worse.

Yeah, but did you listen to it with headphones really loud, cuz that's important.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 28 August 2010 05:03 (thirteen years ago) link

I will agree that IKAG is a joyless song (I would describe it as malevolent), but so are a lot of great metal/rock songs, which is pretty much what IKAG is.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 28 August 2010 05:05 (thirteen years ago) link

Actually, after going to take a peep at lyrics, it was actually "Ur So Gay" that I heard first. I remember thinking "I can NOT deal with songs that namedrop Myspace." Shortly thereafter, "I Kissed a Girl" came out and I was convinced at that point that I wanted to have nothing to do with her.

Then "Hot n' Cold" was an improvement, so I softened a little. And then "Vegas" was legitimately good, which I found incredibly frustrating because I couldn't hate her anymore.

That said, nothing I've heard from the new album (and I actually listened to half of it the other night) has stopped her from going back downhill in my estimation.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 28 August 2010 05:13 (thirteen years ago) link

matt, if you think that KP has a huge drop off after "i kissed a girl" & "hot n cold" then you're probably going to find quite a bit of disagreement round here

J0rdan S., Saturday, 28 August 2010 05:20 (thirteen years ago) link

but like, i think there's a clear diff b/w the material from her second album and her third album where you could see why someone would like the new stuff

J0rdan S., Saturday, 28 August 2010 05:24 (thirteen years ago) link

California Gurls would be in that league if the vocal melody in the chorus wasn't a mess.

Don't mean to imply that those other songs suck. Thinking of You and Firework are her only singles that I don't think are good songs.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 28 August 2010 05:29 (thirteen years ago) link

Firework is absolutely abysmal.

not much of a difference between HNC and IKAG though, imo.

There's a new style on the new album, for sure.

i agree w/ this

hot n cold is so good. other than teenage dream it's her best single.

Hot 'n' Cold seems to be permanently running in my head, 24/7.

three years pass...

Finally realized why Teenage Dream gives me creeps. It subconsciously reminds me of Don't Fear the Reaper.

40,000 more everyday in skintight jeans

You and Dad's Army? (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 7 October 2014 20:41 (nine years ago) link

It's like it rests on the same persuasive sex-death axis whether they're talking about 40,000 men and women everyday or skintight jeans.

never really thought of it that way!

I know a lot of ILXors think Katy Perry is THE WORST but I like some of her singles (not all of them)

example (crüt), Wednesday, 8 October 2014 18:33 (nine years ago) link

I used to hate her but then I realized, every generation gets the Bruce Springsteen it deserves.

"Let's go all the way tonight/no regrets, just love/ we can dance until we die/ You and I will be young forever" could definitely be about a suicide pact

da croupier, Wednesday, 8 October 2014 18:45 (nine years ago) link

it falls into the category of "let's do it because nothing else matters" and "do it" could be sex or death
in either song
don't fear the reaper

cross over the mushroom circle (La Lechera), Wednesday, 8 October 2014 18:53 (nine years ago) link

One of her songs reminds me of the Paula Broadwell/David Petraeus affair. I don't dislike Katy Perry tbh.

Suddenly love "Teenage Dream" even more than I already did, which was considerably.

Eric H., Wednesday, 8 October 2014 19:17 (nine years ago) link

I came around on Katy Perry 2 or 3 years ago. It's a pity her latest album was kind of boring, and I don't like very much of the first one either. Maybe I'm just a Teenage Dream/documentary/Piece of Me fan.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 8 October 2014 19:35 (nine years ago) link

It was "Dark Horse" for me.

Eric H., Wednesday, 8 October 2014 21:18 (nine years ago) link

Uh what?
It was just really ubiquitous when that was going on. I just looked it up -- Wide Awake.

three years pass...

can we re-do this so i can vote for Dark Horse

alpine static, Saturday, 3 February 2018 01:03 (six years ago) link

Just wanna say that I feel like amongst all the dreck from Witness "Hey Hey Hey" was a really good single.

triggercut, Saturday, 3 February 2018 02:00 (six years ago) link

"california gurls" is a jam. basically all the other poll options are traaaaaaaash. i admit i like "roar" more than it really deserves - it's just so fun to sin along to the "and YOU'RE gonna HEAR me" part. can't believe we're now almost a decade in to perry-as-star.

"swish swish" and "bon appetit" have some of the worst lyrics i've ever heard

bon appetit might have turned out ok otherwise

Yeah a new poll could be kinda interesting. I'll spend my time in the comments promoting Last Friday Night, which imo is a total jam

Teenage Dream
Dark Horse
California Gurls
Birthday

After that I'd just be speculating what I like anymore.

Firework is great, this was an odd result

albvivertine, Sunday, 4 February 2018 23:28 (six years ago) link

it's hazy now but iirc ILM really bought into "Hot n Cold" as "pure pop" or something to that effect.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 4 February 2018 23:32 (six years ago) link

it was the first one she did were I thought it was a banger

drugs don't kill people, poppers do (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 4 February 2018 23:33 (six years ago) link

I'm surprised how many Katy Perry singles I've ended up loving over the years.

I have a lot of time for Hot n Cold, Thinking Of You, Teenage Dream, Firework, The One That Got Away, Wide Awake, Roar, Dark Horse, Birthday and Chained To The Rhythm. Last Friday Night is probably in my top 10 singles of the decade at this point.

She could have a few more in that list if she'd made some better single choices. The title track from Witness should have been the follow up to Chained. The Prism campaign was just really badly handled in general. Legendary Lovers and Walking On Air should have taken the places of Unconditionally (apparently Katy really fought hard for that one) and This Is How We Do (apparently Katy fighting for Unconditionally and it flopping meant she didn't get to choose any of the other singles and this one was not her call).

kitchen person, Sunday, 4 February 2018 23:44 (six years ago) link

xpost tbf it was only her second single! i think there was a bit of excitement/relief that it was a punchy, brassy uptempo pop-rock song that didn't have the forehead-slapping lyric of "I Kissed A Girl." then her next few singles were all more or less instantly forgotten.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 4 February 2018 23:46 (six years ago) link

firework is one of the worst pop singles of my lifetime

wide awake or dark horse. of these the right one won

difficult listening hour, Sunday, 4 February 2018 23:50 (six years ago) link

surely firework is not worse than "e.t." or "bon appetit."

do you ever feel like a plastic bag

boxedjoy, Monday, 5 February 2018 08:24 (six years ago) link

I mean the thing about "Firework" is its like a safe, straight version of an LGBT anthem - nothing explicitly about queer struggles and oppression, just a horribly shrill rote performance of pride signifiers, and I absolutely do not need my hand held and my voice taken by the same popstar who once sang "you're so gay and you don't even like boys." Katy Perry has a huge amount of great singles as kitchen person lists, but she is the least interesting or likeable thing about any of them.
