grady yr mix is quite hot!

gff, Sunday, 2 September 2007 01:25 (sixteen years ago) link

So A Mountain of One's Collected Works is pretty great - esp. "You Can't Be Serious"! - but there is something kinda offputing about "Innocent Line"... It's not even that it's a bad song, but somehow it makes the group and their music as a whole less inviting. Hard to explain.

The whole thing's a lot like Kate Bush's A Sky of Honey innit.

Tim F, Monday, 3 September 2007 12:22 (sixteen years ago) link

i enjoyed the diepvries mix especially the middle section to the end. an undiluted morphine hit for sure and i can see myself listening to it frequently. the mixing is really nice.

Telephone thing, Monday, 3 September 2007 18:17 (sixteen years ago) link

woah those badly drawn boy remixes are way good! i like the dubbed out smeared out 10cc vibe that the mountain of one versions have and reverso 68 is always reliable (some "pale shelter" and pet shop boys stuff going on in those).

tricky, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 00:26 (sixteen years ago) link

the AMO1/Studio 12" dropped.

gr8080, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 00:28 (sixteen years ago) link

tricky, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 00:50 (sixteen years ago) link

Tricky I've made two balearic comps for you! I just have to send the damn things!

Tim F, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 01:03 (sixteen years ago) link

In fact pretty much all the comps I'm sending you are kinda belearic. My 6:33am Eternal series is Balearic: the Dark Side...

Tim F, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 01:04 (sixteen years ago) link

I just joined a group on Facebook called "Balearic Assassins of Love" with the following info line:

"Purveyors of music made by bearded dudes in the seventies and eighties and pitched down and played loud by two occasionally hairy blokes in the 00ties."

Tim F, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 01:06 (sixteen years ago) link

haha, i had no idea that my flipping out over screwed minimal earlier this year would turn into this.

excellent news about the comps !

grady your mix is rad.

tricky, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 01:13 (sixteen years ago) link

i'm glad you guys like it.

i'll do a vol. 2 in a month or so.

gr8080, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 01:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Tim F, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 14:34 (sixteen years ago) link

Really not feeling this Mountain of One thing, esp the vocals.

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 14:53 (sixteen years ago) link

On a side note, after getting the Prefab Sprout "Steve McQueen" reissue this weekend, I realised that they could fit nicely on a balearic mix.

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 14:56 (sixteen years ago) link

This mix also U&K:

Hardway Brothers Bathing Machine Mix (scroll down a bit)

Ronny & Renzo - Big Smack & Flies
Verity Smith - Summertime (Flash Faction Dub)
Badly Drawn Boy - Promises (A Mountain of One Instrumental)
The Smiths - How Soon In Dub (Bootleg)
Mari Boine - It Ain’t Neccessarily Evil (Mungolian Remix)
Mott The Hoople - Bastard (AM01 Edit)
Herb Alpert - Rotation (Alternative Version)
Audio Deluxe - 60 Seconds
The Lovers - Bring Your Chaos
War of the Worlds - The Heat Ray (Hardway Bros Electric Edit)
Sly Mongoose - Bad Pulse (Padded Cell Remix)

A handy reminder of how utterly superior to everything else ever that Mungolian Jet Set remix of Mari Boine is.

Speaking of "Balearic," anyone have the tracklist for Simonetti's "Balearic Sabbath" comp? There is just one song I don't recognize (the one right after Stevie Wonder)

Also, classic for including the best, weirdest Sylvester song ever

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Saturday, 8 September 2007 03:36 (sixteen years ago) link

9. Fran-Key - Tetrapod Lover (Takimis Lost Ipod Mix) (Crue-l)

this is pretty darn amazing. anybody with any other recommendations along this line? i suppose i should now check out the crue-l grand orchestra, huh?

Hmmm...maybe it's before Stevie. I don't know, It's not Wings, Fleetwood Mac, Stevie, Sylvester, or Sabbath - what else is there? It's a longer tune...the lyrics sound like 'hold on...bella' but that ain't it...

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 16:55 (sixteen years ago) link

that is "Onda" by Cassiona

it's a Brazilian track, I only know it cuz I have it on a different mix with titles (Brazilian Beat Brooklyn Vol. 1 or something like that)

dmr, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 17:03 (sixteen years ago) link

http://www.brazilianbeatbrooklyn.com/bbhtml/mix.html

I think it was on Baile Funk 1 (which is like chill 70s music, not the current type of baile)

Ah! Thank you!!

i picked up the Hatchback 12" this weekend and it skips twice. there's no gunk or scratches. maybe it was pressed offcenter? i need to return it. bummed.

jaxon, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 03:22 (sixteen years ago) link

how was it when they came into the store? what kinda stuff did they play?

jaxon, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 03:23 (sixteen years ago) link

it was great! a little crowd of friends and heads came out to see 'em, and they played a mixture of soon to be released and unreleased original stuff, ultra-deep-digging cosmic/kraut stuff (Space Art was a notable one) and some newer cosmic/balearic stuff like the Aeroplane 12" on Eskimo. Sucks about the the Hatchback 12", we've got a few left, i'll make sure there's one for you to exchange when you come in. ask for me.

BATTAGS, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 20:42 (sixteen years ago) link

Tropical Hotdog is a great name.

it didn't occur to me until I saw their blog that it's a captain beefheart reference

tropical hotdog night, like two flamingoes in a fruit fight!

dmr, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 21:42 (sixteen years ago) link

Here's a mix i did recently, live at an 'ambient/chill' festival in the middle of the woods in Mendocino County, CA. the tracklist:

allez allez - african queen (quiet village remix)
fern kinney - baby let me kiss you
pointer sisters - mercury rising (dub version)
mudd - c40
six cups of rebel - kontroll (the organ grinders breakdown)
key of dreams - africa (dub mix) (klubb kebabb edit)
champ's boys orchestra - tubular bells (cosmic mix)
the knife - marble house (the emperor machine remix)
venus gang - love to fly (cloud edit)
ashford & simpson - solid (dub version)
sorcerer - egyptian sunset
vangelis - let it happen (beatfanatic's balearic boogie mix)
paul simon - diamonds dub (tangoterje edit)
ashra - shuttlecock (cloud edit)
amp fiddler - faith (jazzanova remix)
peter visti - dolly

hope you like it, you can download right HERE

(you'll probably need to right-click that and 'save as', PC users)

BATTAGS, Thursday, 4 October 2007 17:40 (sixteen years ago) link

i was in the store on a sunday about a month ago on a sunday evening and there was some dude spinning one of the craziest ambient/chill sets i've ever heard.

i specifically remember he went from "our prayer" into some sort of pbs-type monologue about prayer into some sort of indian sitar/chant type stuff. also lots of alice coltrane-styled raga jazz and lots of cluster-sounding ambient krautrock

any idea who that was??!?
