Don't be so sure, guys. According to this one interview I read, Ben Moody, the other main songwriter, quit the band because she was too concerned about whether or not they were "selling out."

Well, their videos are hilarious.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 05:09 (nineteen years ago) link

And yeah, the singer is hot.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 05:10 (nineteen years ago) link

I prefer their more metal-oriented songs (their cover of "Tourniquet" is quite good), but in the end, I'd rather listen to Lacuna Coil.

abegrand, Wednesday, 19 May 2004 05:50 (nineteen years ago) link

They have a sense of overblown, hysterical (melo)drama that few other bands do. And catchy.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 05:54 (nineteen years ago) link

The album version of "My Immortal" is 154 times better than that "for the guys" coda bullshit version, but I am a sap and am also tired of the pro forma Stairway-to-Heavening of rock ballads AND am also fond of the Sarah McLachlan parallels between that track &, well, Sarah McLachlan (were she feeling more bathetic and less reverby).

Also, "Going Under" gives me goosebumps (cf. the OTM pre-chorus observation made above).

I've always wondered why it was Evanescence that blew up in the mainstream and not one of those hundreds of other female-fronted goth metal bands, and why only now and not eight years ago when the phenomenon appeared.

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 06:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Their most recent video reminds me of something Candlebox or Ugly Kid Joe would have done.

Steev (Steev), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 07:08 (nineteen years ago) link

The chord progressions in "Bring Me To Life" are very early Britney.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 08:53 (nineteen years ago) link

I actually really like Amy's voice.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 09:01 (nineteen years ago) link

Okay, their album has fantastic production (not appreciated by many who might be their fans because it owes more to electronic or hip hop), their singer is very hot and a great singer, the piano on some of their tracks is AMAZING, they look very cool!

Their music may sell well (oh no!) but to me it feels like it's from the heart.

Isn't that enough?

mei (mei), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 09:03 (nineteen years ago) link

To be honest Mei it was the whiff of sincerity which put me off them at first. Then I got over that and focused on the BRITNEY POWER CHORDS.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 09:05 (nineteen years ago) link

Amy Lee is ludicrously hot

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 09:06 (nineteen years ago) link

True, they do not have a corn filter (a small mesh apparatus in the brain that stops corny ideas like the guest raps and Seether collabs from getting through). Besides that, they're the only opera I can listen to. And I love christian girls. I went to christian summer camps from ages eight to sixteen, so I know. Where? Down in my heart!

Check out the Gabriel & Dresden remix of "Hello."

LC, Wednesday, 19 May 2004 09:21 (nineteen years ago) link

Church camp memories!

"Johnny Appleseed (bang bang!) Let's eat!"

Our cabins were all named after trees. My cabin was Juniper and it was the cleanest cabin of the year. We also won floor hockey and archery. There were bats at the campsite so I made this little bat-noise maker with a branch and a thick leaf and waved it by girls' ears - it made them hoes JUMP!

My friend only brought one pair of sandals and they started to stink so bad at evening chapel he had to go barefoot. I tried to help him out by putting cologne on them but it didn't work.

One water fountain outside chapel. The big thing one year was spit wars with girls - we chased all the girls and they chased us, everyone spitting water on each other. Christian girls don't give a fuck. I was hella fast and I got every girl wet. The one I really liked wrote this in my hymn/memories booklet autograph page: "You got some wheels! See U next summer!" I never did see her next summer.

Evanescence - My Immortal (original version) I had to call my Mom last week because of this song
-- LC (als;kdf...), March 16th, 2004.

LC, Wednesday, 19 May 2004 09:39 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm listening to it right now, reading that summer camp post, thinking about Mom, and I'm still not bawling. I guess that means it's been a great little month!

LC, Wednesday, 19 May 2004 09:42 (nineteen years ago) link

Amy Lee is hot.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 09:53 (nineteen years ago) link

They managed to get a number one record without being over-promoted (at first), hyped in any way, or deemed credible or fashionable by anyone.

The record buying public actually went out and bought the song because they liked it, without being told to.

Respect to them for that. And RIP.

Huey (Huey), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 12:42 (nineteen years ago) link

I like the video for "My Immortal" (that's the black and white ballad one, right?) because when she's lying in crucifixion posture on top of that Volkswagen bug it reminds me of Chris Burden, and I laugh.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 12:46 (nineteen years ago) link

God I'm such a sucker for that moment when the drums come in on "My Immortal", which I think is the "for the guys" moment referred to above. Makes the song for me.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 12:53 (nineteen years ago) link

Amy Lee is hot.

some might say LUDICROUSLY so

"When ah move you move...just like that...aw shit she fell off the ledge!"

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 13:34 (nineteen years ago) link

It took a long time for me to listen to "My Immortal" from beginning to end. I almost wish I hadn't, because now I'm masochistically addicted to enduring it every time its on the radio. Now these wounds REALLY won't seem to heal. For that reason, I prefer "Bring Me To Life" even though its not as good.

Evanescence is soooo defensible.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 22:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Evanescence put out the best rock record of last year easy. They halfway redeemed the cocksmoker from 12 Stones. The chick really isn't that hot though.

adam (adam), Thursday, 20 May 2004 02:17 (nineteen years ago) link

she's hot in that realistic, semi-attainable way, though. I work with a girl who hates Evanescence, and I suspect it's because she bears a fair resemblance to Amy Lee and has been told so one too many times. But oh, the hotness.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 20 May 2004 02:30 (nineteen years ago) link

I vastly prefer Evanescence to the other goth-chick metal bands like Lacuna Coil, because that's not my style of music, and those other bands aren't ever going to release anything as goofy as "Bring Me to Life."

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:37 (nineteen years ago) link

I have that trance version of "Bring Me to Life" and it's really quite good. Other than that I haven't heard a lick of them. Is there some reason for all the hate?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 20 May 2004 04:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Obviously because they're an amusing, well-constructed and hugely enjoyable pastiche of a number of genres people get really uppity about, insisting REALNESS and such, forgetting the fact that none of their pet artists in said genres will ever do something as good as "My Last Breath" (the hidden killer on the album, tucked away as track 10!) or "Bring Me To Life".

This band is still going, although they've announced further lineup changes. At this point, aren't they pretty much the ship of Theseus?

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Tuesday, 24 May 2022 22:32 (one year ago) link

Marginally better lyrics than Bon Jovi
Marginally better music than Nightwish
Going Under has aged very well and is up there with Numb by Linkin Park for nostalgia, being 15, and watching video clips on TV

one year passes...

obv i was way too cool to like the open door when it came out (internalized misogyny) but i love fallen and was listening to it today and was like... well, what if it's good? it's probably good? i kinda miss the extremely processed sound of fallen, just sounds like the best sounding record you could possibly make in 2003, obv they went for a live-er sound on the open door which weirdly sounds more compressed (in line with heavy rock production in 2006) but once it gets goin' it's kinda like a nu-metal sarah mclachlan record? adore it
