I taped it off my television when I was 7.

I picked up a copy at FYE when I was like 16 and resold it for 60 bucks later :D

Someone needs to overdub that Derek Bailey footage with plank spankin' widdletasticness, and make it look authentic.

That "Crossroads" clip was hilarious.

StSanders's santana video made me think of rené lussier when he did some musique actuelle "comic" sync to moving images . there are not many videos of him on youtube but 50 seconds into this one he does a bit of shredding http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmnxIRyCk0g

Look a bit closer people. This isnt Eddie playing.

This is someone at home on their computer with a guitar and some samples, overdubbing their own audio to the video.

It doesnt even sound like Eddie.

OK wow how did I miss this thread earlier. I am in hysterics at my desk.

Trayce, Thursday, 1 November 2007 06:20 (sixteen years ago) link

I think the Slash one may actually be my favorite. I was watching it with my brother a few weeks ago and we nearly passed out laughing. The Ozzy/Jake E. Lee one is great as well, especially when Ozzy picks that thing up off the stage and whips it out into the audience.

These are all great. My only complaint - and it's a minor one, all told - is that all other players are heard *only* when on-screen. Kind of works against the suspension of disbelief that makes these videos so wonderful.

sleepingbag, Sunday, 4 November 2007 16:01 (sixteen years ago) link

I showed these to a roomful of people last night: 75% were in absolute hysterics, and 25% were utterly annoyed and unamused. I think StSanders has accidently stumbled upon some kind of weird humor litmus test here.

As for me, they make me laugh so hard I can barely breathe.

J, Sunday, 4 November 2007 16:11 (sixteen years ago) link

The Satriani one! OMG at the very end the lightswitch sound killed me.

1) I wish someone hadn't ruined this for me
2) re van halen: http://createdigitalmusic.com/2007/10/18/onstage-tech-disasters-van-halen-goes-microtonal/

wow tons of comments -- offhand the sampling rate difference intuitively seems like it'd be right to raise it from c to above c# but a sampling rate change wouldn't be linear since an octave is a freq double? I tired

http://createdigitalmusic.com/2007/10/23/great-musical-mysteries-van-halen-mishap-remains-unsolved/#more-2621

fuck'd if i know

3) I want to see Mick Fleetwood making his stupid face on one of these videos

the litmus test comment above really fascinates me.

cutty, Monday, 5 November 2007 12:06 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah i played this for some french people and one guy - an avant-garde jazz drummer - was in absolute hysterics, the others had no idea why it was funny; when they finally got it they were amused, but more by our amusement than by the video itself

Tracer Hand, Monday, 5 November 2007 13:33 (sixteen years ago) link

the clapton one is the best done

love the whammy

Charlie Howard, Monday, 5 November 2007 15:33 (sixteen years ago) link

the litmus test comment above really fascinates me.

To be clear, I'm not trying to say that some people "pass" and others "fail." The people who were annoyed and unamused in the room completely understood the concept and the joke, they just thought it wasn't at all funny. The whole thing really made me wonder about the differences between people's humor, and for some reason reactions to the shred videos really demonstrate those differences to a degree I don't think I've seen before.

J, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 00:38 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm not sure if they author's intent was to have the production of the hoax sound purposefully amateurish or not.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 03:40 (sixteen years ago) link

I think it helps to have been around people who have played more or less in that style (or to have been such a person). Helps you understand just what the difference between a crap sound and a "pro" sound is, since that's one of the really amazing devices in these things. They sound more or less like something someone would actually play--just not those people, in those settings.

Also I was listening to "Saints" by Marc Ribot and the first track kind of reminded me of some of this stuff... (better obv.)

These Robust Cookies, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 08:30 (sixteen years ago) link

These are so hysterical that they've gotta be fakes. Real people aren't capable of that much disjointed noodling. The camera angles are similarly cut-up, so it must have been edited together. And the intermittent applause must have been dubbed in. Right? Right?

Rich Smörgasbord, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 09:34 (sixteen years ago) link

Uhh, ok, I've actually watched these again now, paying more attention to the guitarist's fingers. Whoever did these did a good job. Still, a three-necked guitar is funny no matter what you play.

Wow, Barstow is fantastic! Have you heard the whole album? It's somewhat embarrassingly tempting to buy the xmas CD. Hell, Christmas is coming up, and I need presents...

I only got into these via the dude's Darth Vader overdub, which is his best work.

the one for Metallica's "One" music video was pretty hilarious, especially due to the tempo inaccuracies that eerily resembled their live flubs circa the 1997-98 live era

Iron Maiden vid is great for the time StSanders breaks into the Ringling brothers theme

damn, i should've put these on my year-end music list!

Jordan, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 00:10 (sixteen years ago) link

When I first saw the Eddie Van Halen video, I thought he was just really drunk until it got the "Iron Man" part. I knew that EVH could not fuck up "Iron Man" that bad. Then I got the joke.

These are so great.

I saw that people are starting to copy this style ie Judas Priest Shreds. Not nearly as funny...

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 01:59 (sixteen years ago) link

I dunno, that Priest one is pretty funny.

New StSanders one I hadn't seen yet: Paco De Lucia. Pay close attention to all the guys in the back of the set, because he matched their sounds too! This guy is so dedicated to his art.

The new Anssi Kela one is hilarious too.

The Van Halen one was the first I ever saw. And is still my fav, dunno why.

squids, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 09:30 (sixteen years ago) link

one month passes...

the dude who made these was on Jimmy Kimmel's show .. with Slash as the guest! he is a Finnish guy, and apparently the show flew him over and it was his first time ever in America!

saw it over X-mas break. Kimmel was a total retarded douchebag towards the guy ... it was obvious he didn't "get it". But the guy tried to do his thing live, holding a guitar, to a video of a Slash performance. Then the man himself got onstage and "jammed" next to the guy. Completely bizarre.
