I'm saying, guys, I don't get behind the played, tired, wack, anachronistic, neon-tinted concept at all; but every once in a blue moon they produce something that I enjoy on a visceral level that transcends overthinking.

i would like their shit if they all weren't 3 1/2 minutes long or w/e. it gets kinda tiring. i think a lot of their ideas are great but ive never listened to any of their tracks in full i dont think

I actually am still waiting to "run through Best Buy waving a cd with a tattooed baby on the cover" but I am planning on it after work...or probably just casually walking from the rack of wayne cd's to the register, arms at my sides

I'm really trying to wrap my head around a guy who's every fifth line is terrible being the savior of rap to Vibe readers and pfrok readers alike just because people like to parse shit like "I'm so high I could eat a star."

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 20:09 (fifteen years ago) link

Lil wayne is nice and all, but wow

can i just reiterate that when i said 'hood internet' is my favorite shit, i meant the name 'hood internet,' not the actual hood internet which i have never heard

Though I WILL say that hipster-hop has been as hit or miss as any sub-sub-sub-genre:

-one or two killer MCs (Wale, Kidz In The Hall)
-some OK-at-best singles from some not-so-killer MCs that probably won't be around next year (Cool Kids "Mikey Rocks," Knux "Cappuchino," Izza Kizza, "Walk That Dog")
-some pretty awful rappers getting an amazing amount of hype because of the way they dress (Jay Electronica, Mickey Factz, Kid Cudi)
-some downright loathsome shit that needs to get murked (Uffie, Kid Sister)

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 20:38 (fifteen years ago) link

Also eth could you back up off dudes who're excited about a rap album I mean goddamn at least its not Wale or whatever the backpackisphere is riding for this month.

What's good spring/summer shit? I wanna know for real! I been off mixtapedx for a minute.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 20:39 (fifteen years ago) link

the backpackisphere

backpakistan

shit that was a missed opportunity

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 20:39 (fifteen years ago) link

that izza kizza track isn't as good as 369

Jordan, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 20:42 (fifteen years ago) link

best post in thread lately

hoos there is a real thin line between lil wayne and backpackistan these days

deej, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 21:17 (fifteen years ago) link

dudes who're excited about a rap album

excited is one thing, liveblogging an album drop is another

am0n, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 21:41 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm not gonna involve myself in the arguments here, but I finally figured out what that Knux song reminds me of. It's definitely got a De La circa 2000 vibe to it.

-one or two killer MCs (Wale

let's try not to zing ppl who like the cool kids when you're calling a dude who sounds comatose a 'killer mc'

srsly tho ftr i don't think the cool kids are amazing rappers saviors of the game, just for a few young dudes they can flow well and got hot beats imo. more than you could say for wale anyway

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 10 June 2008 22:04 (fifteen years ago) link

and if you guys don't think im poking fun at myself by posting pictures of me w/ tha carter III you need to brighten up

let's keep it posi

let's try not to zing ppl who like the cool kids when you're calling a dude who sounds comatose a 'killer mc'

for real

-one or two killer MCs (Wale)
-some pretty awful rappers getting an amazing amount of hype (Jay Electronica

this is possibly the most backwards shit on this entire thread

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 22:09 (fifteen years ago) link

Jay has vocal personality, interesting flow and internal rhyme schemes all over. Wale sounds like his Dad just dragged him out of bed and into the studio so he could lay down some rhymes.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 22:12 (fifteen years ago) link

Granted they're both gimmicky to a degree: t/s rapping over 'eternal sunshine' score vs. rapping over seinfeld clips

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 22:15 (fifteen years ago) link

it seems like no one in this thread is able to be otm about hipster rap (self included) ... everyone's all BLANKET STATEMENT + EXCEPTION but none of them seem like really good tim f. style summations of the 'movement'

deej, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 22:16 (fifteen years ago) link

its just so easy to hate and there are so many shitty rappers, this is the kind of shit that would be best on a one-disc compilation. u could call it 'run the road'

deej, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 22:17 (fifteen years ago) link

'ronson the road'

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 10 June 2008 22:17 (fifteen years ago) link

I wasn't trying to zing u J0rdan, I was trying to figure out where and what's zing was directed.

Also, maybe I'm being presumptious about Wale since I wasn't exactly sold on Wale until like 24 hours ago. "Nike Boots" sucks, but there's like 3 or 4 pretty insane tracks on his new mixtape if you can make it through the whole thing.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 22:18 (fifteen years ago) link

well done

Or anyone big-upped by fashion magazines and slow-to-pick-up print mags trying to understand kids who themselves are still trying to understand the way we're supposed to listen to music in 2008.
