There is a place in Berkeley where you can get placenta stew, but it's kinda on the DL for obvious reasons.
This DUMPLINGS! movie sounds like a remake of that HK horror film from 25 (?) years ago called "Human pork bun" (rough translation).

It's not. Are you thinking about The Untold Story with Anthony Wong?

I guess there are translations which have Human Meat Pie in the title:

人肉叉燒包 where人肉 = "yak yun" (?) = human 叉燒包 = cha siu bao = pork bun

I read this whole story and I still don't really understand what people in my 'hood were so angry about
is it that they don't want any vendors in the park? or is it that they're angry that they weren't consulted about WHICH vendors would get to operate? I kinda can't fathom any Mission resident having a beef with La Cocina. Blue Bottle is a different matter but it's not like they're a horrible company or anything. and unless all these people were going to recommend a tax increase to make up for the Dept's $70k shortfall, what did they expect the Dept to do? I totally don't have any problem with either vendor operating in the park. Would be excited if they just fix the park's drainage problems and retrofit the bathrooms.

it's just weird - there's all this negativity from the crowd, the elected officials seem like they're bending over backwards to appease everybody, same with the vendors. but people's objections are never really articulated

I am excited about Ragazza for being a block away, for finally getting a new restaurnat in the space (I love the garden in the back) and, while the pizza is good, also having other items like the above-mentioned sardines, roasts, excellent salads, good wine list.
― A Reclaimer Hewn With (Michael White), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 20:14 (thirteen years ago) link
yep. it's solid and cheap. if you want to walk a little more you have some Pakistani options north of market like Lahore Karahi, Shalimar, et al.
if you want to spend a little more, Farmer Brown's is close.

I did Ragazza on Friday night and thought it was decent neighborhood restaurant (we got sardines, pork belly, salume plate and egg/taleggio/potato pizza). the salume is probably last on my long list of salume/charcuterie options. pizza was good though. uva kills this place imo, not even close. did you have a falling out with them MW?

Where should I shop for food? Rainbow? Half a block from Dolores Park, bike, currently no car. I'm blowing all of my non-existent paycheck at Bi-Rite.

" the salume is probably last on my long list of salume/charcuterie options. "
sorry i was being polite for some reason; it sucked. amateur hour at best. they need to check out quince, perbacco, uva or even cav to see how it's done, this was just garbage.

on the cheaps: rainbow (actually there are cheaper co-ops in SF but less variety) for bulk, farmers markets for produce, costco for proteins.

Not at all. I like their pizza better but otherwise I prefer Uva generally and I'm WAY tighter w/Chris and Boris and Giovanni and Ben. There was a salad at Ragazza that wasn't on the menu, that had egg and radicchio in it that was excellent and their margherita rocked sufficiently and it's nice to have some choice/variation. I will definitely check out their roasts once the weather gets cold enough. I don't really find them comparable, though. One's an enoteca (kinda like an izakaya) albeit a high end one and the other's a local pizza joint.

I get my pork from Costco often or New Mei Wah.
For non-famer's market days, I cannot recommend Golden Produce on Church opposite Safeway enough.

is it that they don't want any vendors in the park? or is it that they're angry that they weren't consulted about WHICH vendors would get to operate?
i got an email from someone who is on the anti-vendor side of things, and it seems like one of their arguments against Blue Bottle is that they are "based in Oakland" and thus not local .... uh?
Dear concerned citizens of San Francisco, do you realize how much of your workforce lives outside of your fair city and how many of your local businesses have facilities outside of San Francisco - because your city is geographically small and super expensive?

it's just kinda dumb - like SF seems to take every opportunity to convert industrial warehouse buildings to luxury lofts, condos, retail or tear them down and build sports stadiums.
I'm a major proponent of SF-Alameda County cooperation and <3
