one month passes...

I have a week off work coming up, and I would like to not spend it sitting in the house all day doing nothing, but neither would I like to break the bank. What would ilxors recommend for me to fill my seven days with? I'll probably do Kelvingrove and the Transport Museum at some point because, even though I've been a few times before, I never get bored of them, but are there any hidden gems or good ideas you can give me?

Transport museum, if I remember rightly, is closed for relocation. Sorry to drop that wee bombshell.

Cathedral?

Summerlee is a wee bit out the way but is an interesting (and free) way to kill a couple of hours. You get to go on a tram and down an actual dark scary mine.

new lanark. annie mcleod experience will blow your mind.

New Lanark seconded - I love that walk up to the Falls of Clyde. The Tenement House is pretty good, and handy for whatever's on at the CCA if you wanted to go there afterwards.

Madchen, Saturday, 30 October 2010 15:23 (thirteen years ago) link

GOMA always worth a wander round. New Lanark thirded. I like the look of that Summerlee place, might suggest that as a trip for my brother's kids next summer.

If you have a car, Culzean Castle is a great wee day out. If you have National Trust membership, it's all free, but even without you can still just pay for parking and do all the walks and look at the deer and stuff. Our summer days out at Culzean alone more than justify the money we give the National Trust.

Burrell Collection also worth a go, plus Highland cows in Pollok Park!

Spent a year living 25 miles from New Lanark - still have no idea what it is, but I've only ever heard good things about it.

Googling now...

argosgold (AndyTheScot), Saturday, 30 October 2010 16:02 (thirteen years ago) link

Also, rather shamefully, I've never been to the fossil grove in Victoria Park. Go, and report back please.

The Botanics are lovely this time of year (if you can get a rain-free day), and you can try and get into the disused railway station.

We went to a wedding in New Lanark a few years back. It is absolutely lovely.

ailsa, Saturday, 30 October 2010 16:04 (thirteen years ago) link

Good shout on the GOMA - back in the day I used to be one of "those" hanging around outside it, and I always got angry when I realised that I was the only one of my pals who ever actually went inside it. My week is already looking better now, thanks!

Paisley has got Olly Murs and THE SINGING KETTLE turning theirs on a week on Saturday.

The Singing Kettle! I didn't know they were still active. Do you think it's unrealistic to hope I get picked from the audience to come on stage and sing with them as they do at their shows?

Zombie Walk today at 3pm in Kelvingrove Park.

krakow, Sunday, 31 October 2010 09:38 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, we're going to see Olly Murs to continue our tradition of going to support our local council doing something and then getting cold and going to the pub and missing all the acts :-) We do get an X Factor reject every single year now for the lights or the fireworks or both, but presumably boat pushed out too much paying for Olly Murs to afford one for the fireworks, and they've got, somewhat ridiculously, a Paolo Nutini tribute act.

Zombie Walk!

Thanks! It was great fun to watch - the costumes and dedication to the cause were a pleasure to behold.

yeah gd fun pics kraks, zomb in pic 2 is esp impressive

have been following w/ interest ppl's tips for places to go/sights to see.... after four years here, still feel there are huge areas of the city i know nothing abt... keep meaning to buy an all-day bus ticket one day and go roaming w a map... living in dennistoun, my default 'trip' is the cathedral/necropolis... i love the views from the top of alexandra park, too

over time, i have become v attached to the rousseau and voltaire 2nd hand bkshop down otago lane, off kelvinbridge... it is proper old skool eccentric musty bibliophillia, books stacked everywhere floor to ceiling, the stock is gd and changes all the time, prices are mostly v fair, and the hippy tea shop round the corner does a delish pot of milk oolong

Ward Fowler, Sunday, 31 October 2010 19:53 (thirteen years ago) link

v nice krakow. walking home at 3am or so last night i was sad to have used all of my disposable camera photos on people sitting around doing not much. now we have about six inches over here and it's both lovely and, when huge sheets fall off of the roofs, kinda terrifying.

(also encountered the loudest and freakiest thunderstorm i'd ever heard last night. and so did all of my friends who were woken by it. <3 u mad weather.)

jed_, Sunday, 28 November 2010 17:08 (thirteen years ago) link

Me neither.

I think I'm going to try cycling to a gig in the west end tonight. The main roads look clear but wet.

krakow, Sunday, 28 November 2010 17:44 (thirteen years ago) link

oh no, i'm in dundee, sorry. shamefully using the glasgow thread as a scotland-wide thread here.

just thinking about dundee has me googling mcgonagall:

Ye sons of Great Britain, I think no shame
To write in praise of brave General Graham!
Whose name will be handed down to posterity without any stigma,
Because, at the battle of El-Teb, he defeated Osman Digna.

Wow, look at the Park! Which bit was that pic taken, over on the golf course?

Madchen, Sunday, 28 November 2010 21:47 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, over the far side, but at the top of the hill. It was completely untouched over there. I went tramping across acres of totally virgin snow on the golf course, even at midday. Awesome!

The sunset this afternoon was stupendous. I was cycling back from Coatbridge to the East End and had to pull over to watch it across the snow-covered fields and misty tenements in all its blazing red and orange glory. Wonderful.

krakow, Tuesday, 14 December 2010 22:00 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm in Glasgow next week, hopefully. Looking forward to some wintry scenes!
