Starsmith is a talking dolphin who wants to be adopted so he can be safe and happy. He is currently working on the new Kate Nash joint.

Ew, that's pretty awful! Now I kinda regret voting for Weatherall. Isn't he doing techno anymore?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 5 October 2010 21:35 (thirteen years ago) link

James Ford is the manager of the Prospect Street, Hull branch of the Yorkshire Bank. He has produced remixes for Tinie Tempah, Pitbull and Raven Symone.

tbh weatherall has forsworn techno and now only makes music w/ amplified harps, dulcimers and cubase

journey to the end of nyt (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 21:38 (thirteen years ago) link

he writes inchorent screeds about the impurity of rhythm all over the internet

He still releases cynical parodies of Techno under his alias "The Homophobe".

He draws the covers himself then sneaks them into the racks of independent record stores in Mitteleuropa.

Haha most of the dudes no one has heard of are the ones producing Lady Gaga/Katy Perry/Cheryl Cole. Admittedly I hadn't heard of them either.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 5 October 2010 22:10 (thirteen years ago) link

i voted for redone

is there even a token dubstep dude on this list?

I'm hoping this list turns into a discussion about how the NME only covers music that 17 year-old indies are interested in tbh

― Already WSed last summer (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 22:08 (1 hour ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

these things should go hand in hand. 17 year olds aren't just corny indie fuxxors anymore, the only real breakdown is those who don't listen to anything v. those who'll try anything v. those who read kerrang.

oh and xpost my 'ew' was aimed at the list, not yr choice.

a hoy hoy, Tuesday, 5 October 2010 22:22 (thirteen years ago) link

The NME covers dubstep all the time now. It's basically like drum and bass or IDM c.95-98 as far as indie crossover goes.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 5 October 2010 22:28 (thirteen years ago) link

Grime too actually. I don't think they'd be able to fill it with wall-to-wall guitar bands any more and still expect anyone in their target market to buy it.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 5 October 2010 22:29 (thirteen years ago) link

Ross RObinson is the guy that did the new Klaxons, and it's actually pretty enjoyable imo and not the total disaster I was expecting. Think he comes from nu-metal though - Korn & Slipknot iirc?

Beck did a great job on the Charlotte Gainsbourg album. Can't stand his records but that one was gold.

Harrison Buttwhistle (NickB), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 22:40 (thirteen years ago) link

Ross Robinson is responsible for most of the shitty sounding metal albums of the last 15 years but he was ok on the atd-i album, and he produced the cure i think too.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 23:01 (thirteen years ago) link

Duh, have just twigged who Steve Mackey is, but didn't know anything about his productions (MIA, FATM).

Harrison Buttwhistle (NickB), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 23:07 (thirteen years ago) link

mackey's productions are competent and entirely unremarkable. which kind of puts him ahead most of the others on this list tbh

this list :o :o :o

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 09:12 (thirteen years ago) link

might have voted sitek but hes really gone downhill (not that hes shit, just not very interesting anymore) imo

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 09:56 (thirteen years ago) link

It's not that :o - most of them are pretty sought-after and producing massive artists. More so than Funkystepz or Benga or whoever.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 10:00 (thirteen years ago) link

:o because:

personally I agree that in 2010 goddamned beck is hotter behind the boards than any black producer

Haha I didn't even notice Beck in there.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 10:08 (thirteen years ago) link

the way these producers work is pretty diff to how a benga or skream produce though

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 10:14 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah I mean even though it's an NME list I still assumed it was going to be at least primarily 'producers' in the sense associated with electronic/club music, rather than 'guys who are hired to record a band and make them sound good'... most of these names I either don't recognise, have no idea of their producer credentials (Beck?) or in a few cases am automatically turned off by

that tortoise up there was born to loaf around behind a console racking 'em out every half hour, though

ehh, i dunno about this. it's the nme (not a zing, im just saying). it sort of makes more sense for it to mean 'dude who produces other people' rather than 'dude who makes music'.

laughing out loud lol (history mayne), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 10:51 (thirteen years ago) link

sorry yeah I just meant in terms of how I think of the word, which I didn't make clear... that said, if (if) that list is a an accurate summation of 20 bigshot producers of 2010 it doesn't say much for the legacy of good and bankable rock qua rock knobtwiddlers, insofar as most of 'em are also dance producers/remixers/dudes who ~make beats~ (eg Geoff Barrow)

ROLLINS: MY DEMISE (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 11:12 (thirteen years ago) link

like even Ross Robinson is presumably mainly on there because he just did NU RAVE HOPES the Klaxons' second album (which I thought sounded horrible, but I basically hate them so accept that I might not have listened w/ wholly unbiased ears)

ROLLINS: MY DEMISE (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 11:14 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah I've no idea who such a list is meant to appeal to, or who is likely to give a shit.

i might be totally out of the loop with him but who does beck produce these days? apart from the tribute albums hes doing through his site and those samey-as-anything scott pilgrim songs.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 11:19 (thirteen years ago) link

It's hardly making me want to rush out and buy a copy though NRQ.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 11:23 (thirteen years ago) link

xp:Beck has produced someone named Jamie Lidell:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSUjza8Tnf8

and Charlotte Gainsbourg:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrWN0-MuK38

Don't ask me when the shit-hot production comes in though.

xpost it does seem extraordinary, that one.

Check the latest Docherty album, someone.

xpost and now my post is redundant,.

There's hardly anyone on this list who isn't past their best. Rock-wise, it's all a bit 2005.

Didn't see this, but no Mitchell Froom nor even Nigel Godrich, no credibility. :)

Well, he isn't working anymore, but the two I mentioned are, and Nigel Godrich even works with relevant acts.
