Love - Michael Stuart drums on Forever Changes, which is miles better than what came before.

He drummed on "Da Capo", didn't he? Admittedly he was better than Snoopy.

i can't actually think of that many bands who traded *down* on drummers.

Mothers after Jimmy Carl Black + Art Tripp were shown the door (IMO)

Tom A. (Tom B.) (Tom C.) (Tom D.), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 16:41 (thirteen years ago) link

I disagree -- Aynsley Dunbar was the best part of the shitty Flo & Eddie era.

In "Bob" There Is No East or West (WmC), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 17:01 (thirteen years ago) link

Mothers got tons of better drummers, but def did not become a better band by any means

dro™ (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 17:04 (thirteen years ago) link

the awesome Chili Peppers run of Mother's Milk/Bloodsugarsexmagik is def a huge part to Chad Smith being a fucking rhino on the drums

dro™ (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 17:05 (thirteen years ago) link

Roxy band better than any other Zappa line-up and made better music.

xpost

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 17:06 (thirteen years ago) link

Bozzio is def the illest drummer they ever had but nothing can remotely touch the first nine studio records

dro™ (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 17:09 (thirteen years ago) link

There were so many FZ drummers and their roles involved so much more than their drumming (except for Chester/Ralph) that it's kind of a moot point here. I think the only big qualitative change was a dropoff from Vinnie C. to Chad W.

In "Bob" There Is No East or West (WmC), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 17:10 (thirteen years ago) link

Putting Roxy era Zappa over Mothers is like saying Tool better than Sun Ra

dro™ (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 17:10 (thirteen years ago) link

"Tool is better than Sun Ra" = idiocy
"I like Tool better than Sun Ra" = ok whatever have a nice life but get away

In "Bob" There Is No East or West (WmC), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 17:15 (thirteen years ago) link

ps I like the composing/arranging better on the orig Mothers records but I like the playing better on the 73-74 band.

In "Bob" There Is No East or West (WmC), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 17:20 (thirteen years ago) link

I'd take Apostrophe & Overnite Sensation over any of the Mothers stuff. Pretty much apples v. oranges, though.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 17:23 (thirteen years ago) link

Metallica, for that one UK festival gig when Lars was taken ill and they got Lombardo and the Slipknot guy to fill in

thank you for directing me to this clip

Great clip!

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 17:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Sounds like a "Metallica Shreds" version to me, this band is AWFUL.

I'm gonna mention ilxor in everyone of my posts until I get dn'd (ilxor), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 17:52 (thirteen years ago) link

Tom Petty traded down from Stan Lynch to dependable session dude Steve Ferrone IMO. Lynch just had a fuckton of personality that Ferrone doesn't.

a seminar on ass play for kids or something (Phil D.), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 17:56 (thirteen years ago) link

I think the Chili Peppers traded up from Jack Irons (pre-1st album) to Cliff Martinez and then back down to Irons.

In "Bob" There Is No East or West (WmC), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 18:01 (thirteen years ago) link

That dude is clearly more in awe of Lombardo than Hetfield, who's singing like he's 5 years into an off-strip Vegas run.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 22:26 (thirteen years ago) link

Hetfield's certainly got a post-music career as a circus barker or an auctioneer though

committee for the removal of eccentric, evil mods (C.R.E.E.M.) (San Te), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 23:45 (thirteen years ago) link

Traded up:
The Clash w/Topper
Stereolab w/Andy
The Church w/Tim (sorry Richard!)

Traded down:
Spiritualized (Jon Mattock is what makes LGM)
Roxy Music w/o Paul Thompson
Devo w/o Alan Myers
R.E.M.
The Damned w/o Rat

Stockhausen's Helicopter Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Thursday, 7 October 2010 01:10 (thirteen years ago) link

Elvis T otm

Traded down because of gruesome death:
Booker T and the MGs w/Anton Fig

redd cool card-pitt (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 7 October 2010 01:41 (thirteen years ago) link

Not only did Booker T & the MGs trade down, they traded down as far as was humanly possible. I honestly can't think of a worse drummer for that band.

Sterling-Kinney (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 7 October 2010 02:40 (thirteen years ago) link

Aynsley Dunbar was the best part of the shitty Flo & Eddie era

This is true

Tom A. (Tom B.) (Tom C.) (Tom D.), Thursday, 7 October 2010 09:04 (thirteen years ago) link

The Birthday Party. Didn't really wow me until the Bad Seed EP. Mick Harvey is one of my fave drummers of all time.

I don't think Buddy Miles had better chops than Mitch Mitchell; on the contrary. Miles laid down a heavier beat, but Mitchell was more distinctive. As above re: Ringo's fills, where would those Hendrix songs be without the Mitchell fills? (OK, still in the stratosphere, but...). Still, I actually prefer Miles in a lot of ways.

Steve Goulding anecdote: he was packing boxes in our warehouse while a Costello CDs played. "Watching the Detectives" came on, and he muttered something, which turned out to be: "I got 60 quid for that. It was a demo". We checked the CD, and he got a writing credit on the track.

Hmm, he should pursue the publisher then.

Phil Calvert was a fantastic drummer!

Tom A. (Tom B.) (Tom C.) (Tom D.), Saturday, 9 October 2010 16:14 (thirteen years ago) link

Who was most recently playing with Steely Dan before Carlock? Or were they just not touring and using a bunch of different session guys?

buju_stanton (Hurting 2), Saturday, 9 October 2010 16:39 (thirteen years ago) link

Carlock is on the last couple of records. I think Dennis Chambers toured with them a bit, as did Peter Erskine.

Booker T. traded back up again, eventually, by bringing in Keltner, though it's never been the same.

one year passes...

Whattup?

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 9 September 2012 13:36 (eleven years ago) link

Ringo's the best. My favorite Ringo performance atm is "Blue Jay Way".

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 9 September 2012 14:29 (eleven years ago) link

Mick Fleetwood should be worth more than $8.5m? Also, lol at the bands having two of these dudes.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 9 September 2012 14:40 (eleven years ago) link

Pretty sure Mick had some major financial problems not long after Rumors (he went bankrupt at one point).

Sunn? Sunn? It's your cousin, Marvin O))) (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Sunday, 9 September 2012 15:06 (eleven years ago) link

Fleetwood went bankrupt in the 80s.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 9 September 2012 16:05 (eleven years ago) link

To answer the original question, Long Fin Killie, although it was only an incremental improvement.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Sunday, 9 September 2012 16:18 (eleven years ago) link

Luna kinda took a dive when the feelies drummer quit/was fired.

totally, tho their last couple albums were something of a saving grace. Still, demeski's subtle brush work & fills were sorely missed.

From wikipedia entry on josh freese (which ones got better after he arrived?):

A Perfect Circle,
Nine Inch Nails,
Devo,
The Vandals
Sting
Paul Westerberg
Guns N' Roses
Ween
The Offspring
Weezer
Desert Sessions
Ashes Divide

How the hell did Dave Grohl get to be richer than Don Henley?

Vast Halo, Sunday, 9 September 2012 19:24 (eleven years ago) link

did way less blow?

manic pixie, mercy, yo chick she's so quirky (some dude), Sunday, 9 September 2012 19:30 (eleven years ago) link

Tours more, doesn't dole out as much "hush money".

7. Bruce Springsteen

Disagree strongly

Jandek at the Disco (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 9 September 2012 19:33 (eleven years ago) link

Isn't Grohl famously nice as well? Exemplary life that guy lives if so, he's even sucked another drummer along in his slipstream.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 9 September 2012 19:38 (eleven years ago) link

I think Grohl doesn't have to split as much of his publishing. Henley always had collaborators, up to three or four on some Eagles stuff.

Instagrams of Lily on My Facebook Wall (C. Grisso/McCain), Sunday, 9 September 2012 19:40 (eleven years ago) link

Was Marky better than Tommy? What of Richie? and hey let's forget the brief Elvis period...

Mark G, Sunday, 9 September 2012 19:48 (eleven years ago) link

Grohl's Nirvana past plus his massive Foo Fighters loot would account for it, I bet.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 9 September 2012 21:58 (eleven years ago) link

There needs to be some kind of handicap to take account of non-drumming earnings, else you might as well have Madonna at no.1. Ringo fair enough, his loot comes nearly all from the skins; Collins, Henley and Grohl less so.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 9 September 2012 22:03 (eleven years ago) link

eh half the Foo Fighters songs you hear on the radio are Grohl on drums. did Collins and Henley continue to play drums on most of their hits after becoming frontmen/solo stars?

manic pixie, mercy, yo chick she's so quirky (some dude), Sunday, 9 September 2012 22:05 (eleven years ago) link

it does speak volumes that the richest drummer that's never sung lead on a hit song is at #5, though

manic pixie, mercy, yo chick she's so quirky (some dude), Sunday, 9 September 2012 22:06 (eleven years ago) link

I think Watts is the only one in the top 10 without a songwriting credit.
