Crucial.

convention? as in seeing all your mates, going out and having a good time seeing as you've been working like a chump all week?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 21:01 (twenty years ago) link

For me, not so much. I have to work some weekends, but my current schedule of 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. means I can go out any night of the week without repercussion.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 21:01 (twenty years ago) link

I usually work either on sat/sun so not as 'crucial' for me.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 21:01 (twenty years ago) link

Not at all. For the last year, the only real difference for me was who was free that night and what was on television.

I guess I'm asking how important is it to have a contrast, how much more do you enjoy your freetime if you have less of it and don't enjoy your worktime particularly. In what way is the enjoyment different from doing nothing all week and going out anyway?

Also how much do you NEED to have a drink and go out after work or at weekends? And does this further enhance the enjoyment as far as you're not a total alcoholic or something? As far as what?????

I have this thing where I am enjoying myself more now in the summer, working and going out, even though work is pretty bleak, than I was in winter, doing nothing all week and going out anyway. I feel less guilty about going and getting drunk, and also have more money. However I still feel that come the new semester I won't get a job because lazing around is obviously the biggest hobby I have, and impossible to mentally overcome.

It may be an addiction vs common sense thread.

Either way, discuss.

the best time of my entire life was when I was working 12 hour shifts on days and we worked a two-week schedule:

Mon. Tues. Fri. Sat. Sun. Wed. Thurs.

One of the best things about it was that you still got a trad. weekend to share with 'normal' friends every other week, but you also had several days where you could go enjoy yourself without dealing with massive weekend crowds everywhere. I miss that.

Summers of work are only fun if they are novel i.e. you haven't been doing it for years on end. Once the novelty of the 'role-play' wears off you will sink to your news and weep with despair.

No catch me entertaining commuters with my nightly breakdown, arrive at Lansdowne Station at 5.25pm. Come early to get a seat.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 21:14 (twenty years ago) link

its interesting cos at the moment i do not have a demanding work schedule. i get up when i want most of the time, usually much later than when i want in fact - i get work done but not enough. i stay in during the week usually but lately have ventured uptown or just local at least one night in the week. then the weekend comes around but i'm not out every night and my social life remains unsatisfactory because of a conflict of location/interests. if i got a 9-5 job in the city, altho this would limit me in one respect, logic dictates it would also boost my social life as i'd have colleagues again. swings and roundabouts totally.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 21:19 (twenty years ago) link

oh lara I know, the work part is still awful though, it's the bank for christ's sake. the only thing that spurs me on is the knowledge that I don't have to do it for a living. That and the odd off the wall nutcase customer.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 21:22 (twenty years ago) link

*gasp*

Are you in a branch?

*shudders*

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 21:24 (twenty years ago) link

yeah the local one!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 21:25 (twenty years ago) link

I have heard tell that everybody is, in fact, working solely for the weekend.

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 21:28 (twenty years ago) link

I'd like to clarify. I don't go out for a drink every night of the week, but if we've had a particularly gruelling day at the paper, it's nice to go for a pint or two at our local pub.
On occasion, the pint or two does become more of a pint or eight, but that's generally on Thursdays. I don't work Fridays.
And yes, everybody is working for the weekend.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 21:30 (twenty years ago) link

Us or them? And where's local?

I think I would kill someone (myself) if I worked in a branch. May the Lord bless your patience.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 21:34 (twenty years ago) link

oh I'm [bank named erased by moderator], local branch malah*de.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 21:35 (twenty years ago) link

Ha! I'll mail you in the morning. Boredom over summer months sorted (for me).

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 21:36 (twenty years ago) link

yes do! cool, i only had one friend before this.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 21:37 (twenty years ago) link

not in my whole life, just on [bank name] internal mail, in my whole life i have at least 6 or 7.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 21:38 (twenty years ago) link

You do not want more than one friend at the firm. With time comes enlightenment.

In principle, hedonism is highly attractive. In practice a few quiet days between sessions is essential, at least for me.

thoth (Jake Proudlock), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 23:36 (twenty years ago) link

I really hate it when folk say "How was your weekend?" as if I live for weekends, like they do. If I want to do something I do it. I can't wait for the weekend because life is too short. I think it is rude to ask people about their weekends and the next time someone asks me I will give them graphic, blow-by-blow boring account of it.

kayT (kaytee), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 06:18 (twenty years ago) link

I actually used to hate weekends because the shops I wanted to go to were closed and the clubs I wanted to go to were full.

But now I understand. ANd it's terrible, I try to pack as much as humanly possible into those precious 48 hours, so that I end up more tired on Monday morning than I was on Friday night. Wah! And it starts the cycle all over again.

And speaking of work, I should really do some today...

kate (kate), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 07:51 (twenty years ago) link

Weekends are so very crucial for my existence. Spending my w/e's with my nearest & dearest is the only thing that gets me thru the week. I dont really mind my work, but it is not exactly exhillerating. I love spending time at the w/e's not having to do anything if I don't want to. I love the freedom aspect of it.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 07:54 (twenty years ago) link

fourteen years pass...

I vastly prefer weekdays. Weekends are too chaotic, not relaxing, less structured.

Jeff, Monday, 1 January 2018 16:58 (six years ago) link

This distinction is really an idea of industrial revolution/capitalism isn't it? Yes the bible has something to say about the days of the week but still.

29 facepalms, Monday, 1 January 2018 23:25 (six years ago) link

Lol no why would you even think that

El Tomboto, Monday, 1 January 2018 23:29 (six years ago) link

I mean the “industrial revolution/capitalism” creature has no use whatsoever for the concept of weekends and holidays or even nighttime

El Tomboto, Monday, 1 January 2018 23:30 (six years ago) link

The difference between weekdays and weekends is you go to work during the week. The working week. I don't think it's a mind blowing concept. Days, months, years are all natural phonmema, but the week is an entirely human construct. And it only takes a week of not going to work to be unsure what say it is. That' should be clearer today than most days.

29 facepalms, Tuesday, 2 January 2018 01:33 (six years ago) link
