Rent a baby elephant!

Yeah, Dawn and the kids were out when I got home, so I told them all about it.

Baby Elephant Wrestling!

I felt so sorry for the poor abandonned elephant baby who was trying to cross the river, and the other elephants kept smacking water at her with their trunks. Poor thing.

But the elephants at the shelter were SOOO CUTE. Especially when their keepers would be lying down trying to take a nap and the elephants would come over and tickle their faces with their trunks. They looked so surprisingly affectionate.

when i was in high school, i volunteered at the zoo. it was a lot of fun. also, llamas are cool.

They are African elephants, as well, so they have those enourmous floppy ears which make them added extra cute. This is the programme (with a photo of the elephant playing with the keeper):

Marty: Let's try one more number.
Homer: Y'ello?
Bart: [grabs phone] KBBL is going to give me something stupid!
Marty: Well, hot dog! We have a weiner! [car alarm noise]
Homer: [grasping air] Y'ello?
Bart: I won, I won!
Marty: You win your choice of $10,000 or -- what's our gag prize this
week, Bill?
Bill: [raucous] A full-grown African Elephant!
Bart: Well, all that money sounds mighty tempting, Marty, but I think
I'm going to have to go with the elephant.
Homer: [to Marge, happily] He's taking the elephant instead of the
money.
Marty: [whispering] The kid wants the elephant!
Bill: We don't have an damn elephant.
Marty: Don't whisper into the mike!
Bill: Ahem, kid, the elephant's a gag prize. Nobody takes the gag
prize. [nervous laughter] You want the cash.
Bart: [indignant] I want the elephant!
Homer: Heh, heh, stick it to the man!

I didn't like the bloke presenter, though.

"Will Wendy accept me?"
"Oh my goodness, she has not crushed me!!!"
...
"I'm speechless!" (in breathy BBC radio announcer voice, like he has to tell us he's speechless instead of standing, looking gobsmacked at the elephant which would be much more expressive.

Where did you get that picture, Beanz, it's adorable!

i CANNOT STAND THE CUTENESS...

http://www.smithsonianmag.com/smithsonian/issues97/mar97/images/trunkiss.jpg

Yes, it was very sad, and they did overdo the "oh no, these emotionally damaged elephants bit" but it was interesting to think that elephants were so intelligent and socially complex.

MIS Information (kate), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 07:30 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh totally. The fact that they are heartbroken because they'd lost their mums absolutely killed me.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 07:35 (eighteen years ago) link

It was heartbreaking!

But it was weird that they kept using therapy-speak to describe it, rather than saying "these babies are heartbroken cause they've lost their mums!"

Didn't Dodgy once record a song called Elephant?

"I want a baby elephant"

They do grow a bit in later years, you know. Is your garden large enough?

If only genetic engineering could come up with a nice, small, house-bound elephant:

I couldn't believe my eyes when the show just stopped as the elepants started rioting - I'm not sure I can wait till tomorrow night. Verily, this was TV's first elephanger.

Huey (Huey), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 17:56 (eighteen years ago) link

I did feel a bit sorry for the keeper-bloke who was trapped inside a small, locked steel crate with three naughty elephants having a panic attack.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 04:21 (eighteen years ago) link

So what happened last night?!?!? I missed it! Elephant Riot?!?!? Elephant Panic Attack? Will they have to administer Elephant Prozac as well as Elephant Grief Counselling?

MIS Information (kate), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 06:36 (eighteen years ago) link

I read the prev but one post as with three naughty elephants having a picnic.

I need an anti-twee pill.
