Sorta-related question: Can one buy a seven-day MetroCard at La Guardia Airport? I'm visiting soon and would like to take care of that when I arrive.

i don't know, but i can't imagine doing so wouldn't be more complicated than taking a cab from the airport and buying the metrocard in the subway station nearest your destination

i would suggest just getting a $10 metrocard (6 rides) instead of the weekly pass. it's a better value in most cases.

just FYI, i do not recommend fallign asleep on the subway unless you like being woken up by cops in Jamaica at 5am.

i think transit check is pre-tax dollars -- so you're paying for the metrocard with, well, pre-tax dollars (and your tax bill goes down). you may want to check with your HR people, though.

Fortunately, my card 'lagged' behind the expiration of the last one (ie, unused during vacations etc) I only have to pay for about 8 days. Why it isn't where I always store it I can't figger.

i have a similar problem, this is going to sound ridiculous.. but at my old job i started getting those transitchek credit cards, all exactly for $78 or whatever a monthly costs these days. i was out of work for a while so i started intermittently using them for single rides and daily passes. i have three in my wallet that have like $4-$8 on them. is there anyway i can get the money back or move the credits into one purchase?

An uptown A train derailed inside the 14th Street/8th Avenue subway station in Manhattan this morning. An MTA spokesperson confirmed that one of the train's wheels "went off the track" around 8:15 a.m. According to the MTA, the train hit some debris in the trackbed as it pulled into the station, causing the derailment and cutting power to all four tracks. All passengers were safely evacuated, the MTA said in a statement. The train "hit a few poles," according to a statement from the FDNY. Approximately 30 people were evacuated from the train, with one person sustaining minor injuries, the FDNY said.

An NYPD spokesperson says an unnamed 30-year-old man has been taken into custody by police, who are investigating whether he caused the derailment. The spokesperson had no further details, but police sources tell the Daily News that "a saboteur clamped wooden planks onto the roadbed." He was reportedly subdued by good Samaritans who "held him at the station until cops took him into custody." The News' sources added that the man was "laughing at his accomplishment."

1 - fining people for this is stupid, just tell them they need to wear a mask or escort them off the subway
2 - I'd say about 5% of people on the trains are going without masks now, 10% more are doing the dicknose thing. It's a game of moving from car to car to avoid people, especially when then sit down right next to you
