stop being a wuss. last night i was drunk and ate this pork that was a week out of date (and out of the packaging). it smelled very.. porky but i masked the smell with blackbean sauce, and cooked it to hell. the only ailment this morning was hangover.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 9 June 2005 14:26 (eighteen years ago) link

maybe I should get teh drunk.

geyser muffler and a quarter (Dave225), Thursday, 9 June 2005 14:29 (eighteen years ago) link

well yeah, alcohol kills germs. and also being drunk is fun

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 9 June 2005 14:34 (eighteen years ago) link

it is EXTREMELY unlikely that a day-old sandwich (one that's been refridgerated) will make you ill.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 9 June 2005 14:36 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, but it tasted kinda nasty.

geyser muffler and a quarter (Dave225), Thursday, 9 June 2005 14:37 (eighteen years ago) link

did it have gherkins in it?

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 9 June 2005 14:38 (eighteen years ago) link

I wish! Now I'm hungry for another, actually.

geyser muffler and a quarter (Dave225), Thursday, 9 June 2005 14:39 (eighteen years ago) link

if one of the ingredients was bad to begin with, then it could make you ill. but otherwise, properly kept (or even improperly kept, really) food won't spoil overnight.

three years pass...

Waht's the SUREFIRE way to get over this in 48 hrs, before I go away for the weekend? When do I know I can move beyond eating rice?

(no puking, just the other. I stupidly ate the "OK parts" of a bad apple on Monday.)

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 10 September 2008 21:06 (fifteen years ago) link

Surefire? Not possible. But a few hints...

Yeah, drink a lot of water
You need to eat but you will probly puke (and the rest)
Painkillers, antacid etc.
If there's one hint I'd say, eat what you feel like - don't worry about nutrition, just whatever appeals. In my experience you're likely to keep it down.

Hope your weekend away doesn't revolve around food because it won't be high up on your favourite things for a while!

Treblekicker, Wednesday, 10 September 2008 23:14 (fifteen years ago) link

Lomotil, but only if your gut is still bothering you when your travels start.

Jaq, Wednesday, 10 September 2008 23:31 (fifteen years ago) link

In my experience you're likely to keep it down.

Keeping it down is not the problem...

I'm going to Philly to eat junk and drink. :P

one month passes...

My husband was saying my bowels made such awful noises during the night.

I lost three kilos. SIGH. Not throwing up, only, y'know,... the runners. Urgh.

stevienixed, Sunday, 2 November 2008 19:34 (fifteen years ago) link

Also, you don't know what it is: poisoning or stomach flu. Both have teh same symptoms. And what does it matter? In a couple of days it's (hopefully)- over. Take some Immodium Instant. (Which we didn't have during the weekend.) I only took Interol.

stevienixed, Sunday, 2 November 2008 19:35 (fifteen years ago) link

Four kilos actually.

stevienixed, Monday, 3 November 2008 12:22 (fifteen years ago) link

How much is a kilo? I lost half a stone last week.

And now, just when I thought i'd kicked it, the sodding thing is BACK.

Do any of those over the counter remedies actually work? I've always been taught to just sweat it out.

I thought it was a virus, but seeing how it's come back about 24 hours after eating very similar meal to what I ate about the same time period before the last one... I'm beginning to wonder if something in my fridge that I';m taking for granted is seriously off.

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Monday, 3 November 2008 12:43 (fifteen years ago) link

here they recommend immodium (which stops the runners) and also enterol (which restores bowel flora (this is how we call it anyway)

i feel like utter shite. i'm hanging on the counter trying not to faint when serving customers. hard job to do.
the other day in a shop i srsly thought i was gonna faint. but i asked for the loo and had a sitdown for a couple of minutes.

stevienixed, Monday, 3 November 2008 15:19 (fifteen years ago) link

btw four kilos is almost nine pounds. yep, NINE POUNDS. this is not really how i wanted to achieve my weight goal. hahaha

stevienixed, Monday, 3 November 2008 15:20 (fifteen years ago) link

Food poisoning is the best calling-in-sick lie.

rubisco (Abbott), Monday, 3 November 2008 21:07 (fifteen years ago) link

I also lost quite a bit of weight from a minor case of food poisoning. Perhaps as much as 7 or 8 lbs. In the past few years, I've kept slim because of two things 1)had my appendix out & didn't eat hardly anything for about days, and 2) food poisoning (possibly caused by eating a slice of pizza after not washing my hands after working on my motorcycle and having grease, oil and gasoline on my hands). When you do get better from food poisoning, food tastes SOO AWESOME and you only want to eat great, healthy organic foods like fruit and grains and really safe stuff, and not processed junk and meats. In the long run, make this a reason to eat healthier and safer.

I booked a band to play my Dj night last sunday. Singer showed up with food poisoning. He slept in the corner until it was his time to play. Then jumped up and rocked out. Then went home.

I was seriously impressed.

the Immodium must go on for me

Indiana Morbs and the Curse of the Ivy League Chorister (Dr Morbius), Friday, 21 August 2009 02:49 (fourteen years ago) link

Immodium is great but sometimes it's better to just let it flush out. Especially for children: before the age of six, no immodium as otherwise the bacteria stay inside the bowels.

Nathalie (stevienixed), Friday, 21 August 2009 07:33 (fourteen years ago) link

I just want to EAT again. Four days of Gatorade & saltines is enough.

Indiana Morbs and the Curse of the Ivy League Chorister (Dr Morbius), Friday, 21 August 2009 12:39 (fourteen years ago) link

Immodium's like quick drying cement and messes you up for days. Fuck that shit.

Or, fuck that! Shit!

I had the "shitters" for about a week during my pregnancy. Thank god it wasn't a "run for the loo" thing though.

Nathalie (stevienixed), Friday, 21 August 2009 13:07 (fourteen years ago) link

So I'm not sure if this is food poisoning or not. I've had food poisoning a few times and I know how much it wrecks my guts.

But so far my stomach only ever hurts every now and then and it's in a very specific spot 2 inches above my belly button. I don't ever really feel nauseous but the big D just keeps coming. I assume the headaches, muscle aches, and occasional dizzyness are just side effects from dehydration? I'm going on day 3 now and hoping it disappears by tomorrow.
Do I have swine flu?

No, stomach buster.

one year passes...

Has anyone ever had food poisoning which resolved WITHOUT any barfing or diarrhea?

At 9 this morning I started to get that characteristic agonizing ache in my upper left gut, it escalated to where for about 8 hours I couldn't do ANYTHING but writhe in pain and try in vain to make something happen out of one end or the other. Then about an hour ago the pain abated... now it's just like a slight soreness.

how do I Mothman a ho? (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 31 March 2011 22:45 (thirteen years ago) link

I'd be concerned if theres no diarrhea or vomiting...you might want to see a doctor to make sure its not something more serious?

VegemiteGrrl, Thursday, 31 March 2011 23:19 (thirteen years ago) link

Funny this thread was revived. I got food poisoning exactly four weeks ago: vomiting, chills, exhaustion, the works. It passed after a couple of days. I think it's returned: no chills, exhaustion, but diarrhea and slight discomfort.

Hey Look More Than Five Years Has Passed And You Have A C (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 31 March 2011 23:46 (thirteen years ago) link

:( no fun at all, you have my sympathies.

VegemiteGrrl, Thursday, 31 March 2011 23:49 (thirteen years ago) link

Jon, severe abdominal pain for 8 hours is worrisome, could be something serious. Food poisoning basically always triggers vomiting/diarrhea, so I don't think you're safe blaming something you ate.

You should go to the doctor/ER, even if the symptoms have settled down for the moment.

I can ask you a bunch of questions to try to narrow down the possibilities (I'm a doctor), but far better you get checked out properly in person.

misty sensorium (Plasmon), Friday, 1 April 2011 00:10 (thirteen years ago) link

I've managed to get an after hours phone call from my Gastroenterologist-- her take was skip the ER unless the pain comes back or fever develops (bcuz unless one of those things is happening they're just gonna make me wait for 7 hrs), and come see her first thing in the a.m.

I have ulcerative colitis and I am starting to suspect this was colitis related, even though the pain was very much food poisoning-esque.

how do I Mothman a ho? (Jon Lewis), Friday, 1 April 2011 00:15 (thirteen years ago) link

Aha OK you have UC and a gastroenterologist. My work here is done. :)

Makes it that much less likely your pain was from food poisoning though, yeah?

Hope it all settles down for you.

misty sensorium (Plasmon), Friday, 1 April 2011 00:20 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, we'll see. It's a pain I've only felt before when I've had food poisoning, but the duration and the way it just ~resolved~ seems not right. Called my friend in florida who's my fellow decades-long IBD sufferer, and who has had strictures before, and it sounds like it probably was not a stricture either.

Stupid guts have been trying to do me in since 1985!

how do I Mothman a ho? (Jon Lewis), Friday, 1 April 2011 00:26 (thirteen years ago) link

could it be severe constipation? after bouts of eating improperly or large quantities of cheese, I had bad abdominal pain that was difficult to resolve on and off in past weeks. resulted in hyperventilation....

hope you feel better soon!

San Te, Friday, 1 April 2011 00:29 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, actually constipation is the one thing you never have to worry about much with UC/Crohn's (unless you get a stricture).

how do I Mothman a ho? (Jon Lewis), Friday, 1 April 2011 01:07 (thirteen years ago) link

What did your GI doc say? I would've guessed partial bowel obstruction that resolved when your pain did.

misty sensorium (Plasmon), Thursday, 7 April 2011 00:00 (thirteen years ago) link

Oatmeal is dead easy then. Don't get that microwave crap in packets; even regular "old fashioned" oats are microwaveable. 1.75:1 water to oats ratio (ymmv), pinch of salt, nuke three minutes; add a spoonful of butter, splash of milk, sweetener of choice, handful of dried fruit.

dart scar rashes (WilliamC), Monday, 13 July 2015 20:43 (eight years ago) link

Brat diet: bananas, rice, applesauce, toast. But I also recommend psyllium husk which will help absorb liquid. Which you should be drinking a bunch of, regardless.
