Sounds heaps like a virus. Two possibilities:

1. Use Firefox
2. Scan for viruses

oooooh I just got the search page again when I tried to put securit.kolla.de in the address frame. This came up: res://mshp.dll/url_error.html#security.kolla.de

Scanning for viruses doesn't work as my Norton has gone all batty. What is Firefox?

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 18 June 2004 05:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Firefox is an alternate browser. http://mozilla.org

Seriously, I'd recommend getting a different virus thingy, it's doing stuff that's too weird to be just spyware.

oh, that firefox. Well see, I've been using Opera and Mozilla for a while, and while the virus doesn't affect them nearly as badly as IE, it still slows down a lot of functions on my machine. And I'd like IE to be fixed, not just use a work-around. Suggest any good anti-virus stuff (since my Norton is fucked?)

Hmm. Vet? That's the only one I think of. They use Norton at work.

Oh, Vet's Australian [no idea where you are]:

America.

Ah. Vet's probably no good then. :)

AntiVir is a goodie and free to download. it located a virus I had that Nortons hadnt detected, and got rid of it easily.

three months pass...
lately i've been so inundated with spyware that i gave up removing it. but now i'm scared about these dialers that i've read about. "hijack this" is too technical for me, i have a hard time committing to deleting files that i'm not 1000% sure are malicious. spybot:search and destroy isn't getting ALL the malicious stuff. what's the best freeware i can download to scan AND remove the stuff automatically, without requiring me to mess around in the registry (i've done that, reluctantly, on occasion)?

reformat your hardrive, never install anything ever

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 8 October 2004 18:25 (nineteen years ago) link

go for AdAware, at Lavasoft.de

my mum called me earlier today, and i had to patiently explain to her never to install anything advertised in a pop-up ad...

Also, use a firewall. I like ZoneAlarm.

In my opinion, everyone needs three things:

Anti Virus Program
Firewall
Spyware Remover

And update all these regulary and have the firewall running constantly. I recently got my comp clean and it's great, so...here's what I use (these are all free and no trial)

Anti Virus: AVG http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/

Firewall: Zone Alarm http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp

Spyware: Ad-Aware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ AND Spybot Search And Destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

What's the best anti-virus program for Macs? Searching around, I only found Dr. Solomon's Virex mentioned, which is supposedly through McAfee, but their website was not helpful at all.

I guess I've decided on avsat!, zonealarm and malwarebyte's
I might switch to AVG if avast sucks
