That's probably #2 for me -- fuck is that song gorgeous. Weirdness: I was just in the middle of listening to an Alan King mix when I started thinking about tracking down Dego's DEMF set to hear that very song in the context of the rest of that set. Just as I was about to stop King's mix, "Deep Burnt" began to slip in.
#1 is "Disco Circus" by Martin Circus. Weeeeeeeee!!!!

but france gall's "merci, herr marquis" smokes (and i'm totally disinterested in the potential kitsch value. well, almost totally)
have we talked about jacqueline taieb? ("7 heures du matin" etc.)
i forget who does "allez, tapez dans les mains" but it's way catchy, hand-claps and all

Fuck you, Dutronc is great!
If you can, seek out the double CD comp. of some 60's / 70's stuff; 'Completement Dutronc'.

As for Keren Ann, I have her debut CD and find it quite ordinary. For contemporary French female singers, I'd recommend Fabienne Delsol and Camille.

Jacqueline Taeib is superb, I am listening to her 'Complete Masterworks' right now.
do you have this on cd, melody? i went looking all over paris for a taeib collection, to no avail. i would love a copy. (i would type "hint, hint" here but that doesn't really qualify as a "hint.")

Amatuer(ist)... no I don't have it on CD yet unfortunately. I downloaded it from someone on soulseek, and, as with anything I download I have full intention to purchase it... if only I could find it! amazon.fr is out of stock.http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00007B5VR/baragogo-21/402-6444607-3636956 I found one copy on gemm.com, but it says that lately the seller has not been filling his orders, so I wouldn't risk it.
I'm happy to pass on copied files to people who are keen to sample ... just let me know if this discussion board is friendly to filesharing talk before I say anymore.
Oh, and BTW the emusic.com link someone gave above has a lot of Brigitte Fontaine mp3s available. When you join for a free trial they give you 50 free mp3s... you could get 2 or 3 entire albums of hers that way.

AND there's a seller on ebay who sells the Femmes de Paris compilation (new) which has many of the ye-ye girls mentioned above. I bought the Gentlemen De Paris comp. and was very happy with it - has Gainsbourg, Dutronc, Antoine, Edouard (who parodies Antoine), and the very expressive and highly entertaining Jacques Filh.
Another very cool ye-ye girl is Stella, whose songs made fun of the ye-ye scene and its adoption of American culture. Here's a recent interview with her: http://chachacharming.com/article.php?id=23
