waiting for REM to perform 3 songs from Monster

aw, that episode was my first exposure to both SNL and REM! and then i made my dad go to the Wherehouse so i could buy the CD!

later i did the same thing when i saw the Cranberries perform "Zombie" but that's a more embarrassing story.

I always thought the '84-'85 season was underrated, despite it mainly being a castful of ringers (Billy Crystal, Martin Short, Harry Shearer, Christopher Guest). It had what was probably Eddie Murphy's crowning achievement:

She was. I didn't even remember her having a WB show after she left SNL. Did anyone watch it?

P.S. I stubmled across this and it happened to be one of the sketches da croupier v unfortunately had to tolerate to get to his beloved REM performances:

What the fuck is that shit?

I really hope they found a bunch of old munchkin outfits in a prop closet, and didn't actually have the crew sit around making an elaborate set with costumes so they could tell Janeane Garofalo to get lost for 3 minutes.

da croupier, Friday, 22 October 2010 14:53 (thirteen years ago) link

And based on the oral history, I wouldn't be surprised if that was the sole intent of the sketch

da croupier, Friday, 22 October 2010 14:54 (thirteen years ago) link

Ellen Cleghorne was so great, wasn't she?

The fact that Jay Mohr hated her now only makes her more awesome in my eyes.

thought this was the best ep since taylor swift last season tho i was kinda stoned so ymmv

I think Nasim Pedrad is starting to become one of my favorite of the new(er) players. It's a shame Fred Armisen isn't dating her, or else she'd have been promoted to full cast status ahead of Abby Elliott.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 24 October 2010 17:19 (thirteen years ago) link

being chris elliott's daughter might've helped too, just sayin'

was on (mute) in a bar last night, i see they did a Rent Is Too Damn High guy for what seemed like 20 minutes

the whole 2nd-gen nepotism angle would make more sense if Chris Elliott had been on the show for more than a year. I dunno if the hypothetical children of Tim Kazurinsky have a foot in the door, ya know? I'm sure it didn't hurt, but being attractive and up for impressions probably helped more.

da croupier, Sunday, 24 October 2010 19:33 (thirteen years ago) link

if you think elliott and kazurinsky are comparable then there is nothing more that i can say to you

jeff, Sunday, 24 October 2010 19:37 (thirteen years ago) link

uh if anything Kazurinsky did more during his SNL stint than Elliott did in his!

also, as far as the abby vs. nasim thing goes, abby's been on longer, don't think people leapfrog their way into the cast (and I think Nasim, who's also attractive and both does impressions and solid character work, is a lock to join soon enough).

da croupier, Sunday, 24 October 2010 19:39 (thirteen years ago) link

super attractive plus longer time on the show

balls, Sunday, 24 October 2010 19:42 (thirteen years ago) link

what's the longest someone spent in featured perf purgatory and wasn't just someone who had a spot on update like a. whitney brown or don novello? and kazurinsky did more than elliot the elder during his snl stint.

balls, Sunday, 24 October 2010 19:46 (thirteen years ago) link

it is possible that chris elliott, as the son of bob elliott and former writer for david letterman, has quite a few connections and a much better reputation in the comedy world than kazurinsky does. not saying that's the only reason that abby is on the show, but to downplay it is kinda ridic.

jeff, Sunday, 24 October 2010 19:46 (thirteen years ago) link

ben stiller never made it past featured performer and his parents have way more connections than chris elliot.

balls, Sunday, 24 October 2010 19:48 (thirteen years ago) link

If Lorne Michaels was worried about displeasing Chris Elliott I think his season on SNL would have been very different

da croupier, Sunday, 24 October 2010 19:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Dennis Miller makes some joke on the Ben Stiller Show about how Stiller split SNL "after he learned there was no 'I' in team"

da croupier, Sunday, 24 October 2010 19:49 (thirteen years ago) link

you're right. fred armisen's dick is the key player here.

jeff, Sunday, 24 October 2010 19:50 (thirteen years ago) link

I just learned Armisen used to be married to Sally Timms today!

da croupier, Sunday, 24 October 2010 19:52 (thirteen years ago) link

stiller split snl (and took odenkirk w/ him) after learning lorne michaels wouldn't let him do a sketch making fun of bono. TRUTH. the story of stiller coming back to host around 9/11 are so bad you wonder how they haven't done damage to his career.

balls, Sunday, 24 October 2010 19:52 (thirteen years ago) link

I dunno how you go from five years with a Mekon to a month with a scientologist but hey!

xpost lol wow never heard the bono story!

da croupier, Sunday, 24 October 2010 19:53 (thirteen years ago) link

ha i knew you'd bite! i wish it was 'we dare not offend bono' but it was actually lorne michaels thinking bono was way too obscure (this is post joshua tree and rattle and hum).

Just because proto-Stiller LOLs >>>> the mostly MOR shit he does these days.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 24 October 2010 20:42 (thirteen years ago) link

the MTV sketch involved him and his co-host running around a city block dressed like Bono and the Edge doing some kind of "Streets Have No Name" parody, but I can't find evidence of it on youtube

da croupier, Sunday, 24 October 2010 20:47 (thirteen years ago) link

I remember that! I remember them playing to, like, five spectators, and when the cops come Stiller/Bono is all "they're trying to shut us down! but the police just want them to turn down a little or something.

I'm amazed Lorne had enough on the ball to sign up the Kids in the Hall.

Love the weird french sketch, first time I've really noticed Taran Killam.

Michael F Gill, Monday, 25 October 2010 01:21 (thirteen years ago) link

It kind of seems like they are flailing, but the experiments worked really well last night - i.e. the French skit and "Sex" Ed the sex educator. The cold open political sketch was awful awful and Wiig just needs to quit now. Sick of every "new" character being a minor variation of all her other ones, like that Home Makeover lady last night.

<3 <3 <3 Emma Stone tho

Sorry I am becoming Mr. Excuse Me But I Have Met Paul Brittain on a Handful of Occasions Since We Have a Mutual Friend, but "Sex" Ed Vincent is actually a character Paul Brittain created at iO in Chicago; it even became a weekly show for a while, with questions from the audience, etc. (never actually saw it myself).

uh you realize that Lorne basically gave KITH their TV show and made it possible, right? and that Bruce and Mark were hired as writers for SNL for a while even before that? obv their show was totally different from the SNL factory system but LM probably deserves some credit for allowing that to happen (even if when Mark did join the cast he was wasted and had to recycle his most predictable running KITH character, Chicken Lady).

some dude, Monday, 25 October 2010 14:50 (thirteen years ago) link

i said this last time but John Mulaney just should not be on camera -- he's obviously a good comedy writer but he just doesn't have much presence and it's almost like they let him just randomly quip about Mad Men during Weekend Update because he misses being on Best Week Ever or something

some dude, Monday, 25 October 2010 14:52 (thirteen years ago) link

"Sex" Ed was incredible imo.

some dude, Monday, 25 October 2010 14:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, I'm not sure if my post was clear, but I loved "Sex" Ed. Its weird, my wife's favorite part of the entire episode was John Mulaney and she wants to see more of him.

thread is making me nostalgic for Ben Stiller show. Anyone watched the DVDs recently? Do they hold up?

Pretty phenomenal that 4 out of the 4 cast members went on to be pretty enormous comedy players.
