My latest mix, recorded live at the Plunge campout in Willits, California, August 21st 2010. Slo-mo disco & balearic tunes with lots of edits and reworks. Many of my favorite tunes of '10 appear in this set, and I'm retiring lots of them for awhile since I caned this stuff all year. For the rest of the sets from Plunge 2010 (including Balearic Mike, DF Tram, Jahsh, Sonic Sunset and many other great ones), go to:http://www.cloudfactory.org/music/plunge.html

I think the first two thirds of it are really strong, how the rest is? I'm not entirely sure. And by sheer coincidence there's a Shining sample in it, making it Halloween Appropriate!

Ahem. Well I just listened to Bad Sunday Pt 1. (The latest one)
As for constructive criticism:
Good tracks (I liked the klock remix of martyn, the four tet, the gesloten one). I don't know if that's just how the kyle hall track ends, but I'd have liked to hear the coda in full.
Mixing wise, I think the better transitions were the ones that let the first track do it's thing, like The Klock into the T++ at the beginning, which was more smooth and to the point than some of the others, even if those stretched out longer and were able to build steam (the problem with building steam, though, is keeping that momentum going. The roughest parts, I'd say, where when going from one track to the next, things would slow down and moods would clash).
I hope that helps.

right EDB, i think i know exactly what you mean. i've been having trouble finding the balance with when to cut out of a mix - i gotta work on timing my out-points better.
― moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 31 October 2010 06:33 (thirteen years ago) link
The other thing I forgot to note is that long filter sweeps and killing of bass always sound much longer when your listening to a mix than when your making it, and that these things are generally best kept short to begin with.

Xpost: Thanks (although I think putting that Dolle Jolle track at teh end may have mucked up the mix's pacing. I almost took it out, but I kept it in because I really liked how the accented O's looked on the tracklist I designed).
And another thank you to whomever it was on the bobbins of the past thread that introduced me to that Davina track.

the davina track has become maybe my fav mad mike production!

― Gukbe, Friday, 5 November 2010 18:13 (thirteen years ago) link
maybe the trick is to start with it!

but then why would you anyone keep listening?
― Gukbe, Friday, 5 November 2010 19:09 (thirteen years ago) link
I think the tricky thing with it is letting it do its thing. Letting it play for 4-6 minutes isn't going to cut it. Of course, it's not always easily letting a 10 minute, 115 bpm track do its thing in the middle of a mix.
I also listened to the first half of bad sunday pt 2 last week, and can say it already sounds a lot better than pt 1. How have I slept on Right Star all this time!?
― EDB, Friday, 5 November 2010 19:42 (thirteen years ago) link
OKAY there are WAY too many tracks for me to list in this next mix.
It started as an attempt to do a Girl Talk-style mix of the whole of the 2000s; 8 minutes per year so it would fit on a CD, but I kinda got busy and so it's only 2000-2003. Still, while it's a bit relentless and kind of messy in places, I do find it quite funny and playing "spot the sample" is fun too. I'm proud of it, but what do you guys think?

hey BATTAGS your mix is exquisite - i'm impressed especially with how many transitions are "in tune" with themselves if you know what i mean. i'm aware you can do pitch shifting these days if using some types of CDJs or whatever; is that what you did? or is it all in my head??

Kind of sloppy mix at times, I need to record more.
