Dean Pelton's Lady Gaga costume was soooo much better than Gabe's.

It also just made more sense; of COURSE Dean Pelton would go as Lady Gaga. Gabe's character isn't interesting enough for him dressing up as Lady Gaga to elicit anything more than a "Oh. Hm." If that.
― Son of Sisyphus of Reaganing (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 29 October 2010 16:32 (thirteen years ago) link
And Pelton's seemed less professional/we-have-a-TV-budget than Gabe's.
great episode. Troy and Abed's Alien/Ripley fight had me dying.
@perpetua Is every other episode of Community going to be a lame movie parody now?
yeah, you would think that it would get old, but it's a testament to how great a show it is that after decades of south park/simpsons/family guy 5 parodies per episode, these writers still manage to find fresh ways to pull it off.
― get off my lawn (rockapads), Friday, 29 October 2010 19:23 (thirteen years ago) link
Oh yeah, so much better. And it did make MUCH more sense. I do have to admit, though, that I actually laughed out loud at The Office this week. More than I have yet this season and most of last season too. The cold open with Stanley was lol and so much better than the forced memes they've been playing with.
Back to the topic at hand though, its killing me that I can't remember where the "I love you" - "I know" reference is from. I know I should know that one. Donald Glover's timing is perfect. His "I have no idea why I thought this would work" switch was so great, as was his "sexy Dracula" costume.

Community is more about the parody of movie cliches than specific films.

and it does it so quickly! Troy and Zombie Abed was fast but that look was enough to be effective. xpost
Ratings were up because of the Shrek lead-in. Around the same numbers as 30 Rock normally gets, so that's good. The next episode's drop will be important.

I love Community, but damn is NBC desperate if they're ordering a full season and additional episodes.
― Gukbe, Thursday, 4 November 2010 20:11 (thirteen years ago) link
Trying to remember where I red it but apparently Community pays for itself in DVD sales not on first run and NBC use online viewing figures as a predictor of this. This is good as the first run ratings are shocking.
― American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Thursday, 4 November 2010 20:15 (thirteen years ago) link
I'm gonna ask for Community DVDs for Christmas then
― Life! The Story of Life (CaptainLorax), Thursday, 4 November 2010 20:16 (thirteen years ago) link
It might pay for itself but NBC really needs hits to up revenue. DVD sales and online figures are fine, but nothing compared to the revenue stream of the first run of a primetime hit.
― Gukbe, Thursday, 4 November 2010 20:20 (thirteen years ago) link
Can't see the affiliates being too happy either.
― American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Thursday, 4 November 2010 20:26 (thirteen years ago) link
I love the show, but there's really no reason it should go beyond a second season. It's a community college! I'm just glad they're getting a full second season.
NBC could do itself a lot of favors by looking at cable (their USA shows do incredibly well and, in most cases, really aren't that bad). If they go edgy like FX or (of late) AMC, they may earn a new reputation as the network which will deliver excellent television at the risk of upsetting the FCC. (I mean, obviously they can't go as far as FX or AMC, but they can push it.)
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 4 November 2010 20:26 (thirteen years ago) link
There's limited value in attempting a gritty and/or edgy cable drama on network TV though. AMC/FX/USA numbers are so far below where networks need them to be. Lone Star is an example. Human Target is probably the closest to a USA show on networks, and it's hardly thriving.
― Gukbe, Thursday, 4 November 2010 20:30 (thirteen years ago) link
I guess you're right. They need to shake it up in one way or another, though, because they've got NOTHING.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 4 November 2010 20:36 (thirteen years ago) link
When you only have one show (The Office) that can offer you a lead in to build a new series, you're in trouble, yeah. Still, it works out for the fans of Community. and 30 Rock. and Friday Night Lights.
― Gukbe, Thursday, 4 November 2010 20:38 (thirteen years ago) link
The networks definitely have their own personalities. I mean, if I'm watching Grey's Anatomy (for example...I actually haven't watched it in years), I know right away I'm watching an ABC show. NCIS is unmistakably CBS. I can't even imagine either of those shows on alternate networks, and especially not on NBC. NBC dramas over the last decade just seem to have some kind of cheap sheen on them. Friday Night Lights and Southland were the most surprising exceptions, and neither of them translated in that setting.

Abed-as-Robocop was, sure, gimmicky, but totally worth it for Britta's "rowboat-cop" line.
― Son of Sisyphus of Reaganing (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 5 November 2010 04:00 (thirteen years ago) link
It's not so much that it was gimmicky, it's that it was a reductive, cheap way to portray his Asperger's, which was handled a little more deftly last season iirc
― Simon H., Friday, 5 November 2010 04:03 (thirteen years ago) link
Good point, but it could also be argued (not necessarily by me, I'm just playing devil's advocate) that this is the manifestation of Abed's Asperger's, as seen through Abed's eyes -- a bittersweet gaze into his psyche.
Or something.
