It's worth remembering that Rollins is a) a socially awkward nerd (I've met him and interviewed him twice in person and twice by phone) and b) a guy people used to stub out cigarettes on, throw things at and start fights with during Black Flag sets, so the idea that he might be a little more guarded, and might perceive slights more quickly, than your average person isn't totally surprising to me.

i don't know if i'd classify a guy who does spoken word, is a talking head on just about everything, had his own interview show, etc. as a genuinely socially awkward nerd. also re: Blak Flag, it's not like he was being picked on or anything. BF and Rollins had a certain reputation and he played to it.

Those elitist assholes shouldn't bring up his grammy winning audiobook thankyouverymuch.

I will always think of you, while (quite) fondly, myself (Evan), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 17:39 (thirteen years ago) link

Really the only reasonable person here is the lady hanging with Henry. The Cakeshop women were off camera, so their claim of just wanting to hang out seems a little bogus. They acted out and pretty much asked for H. to confront them. Fairly easy to imagine that they knew he may be an easy mark.

As far as them being into his music and thus on his side (and undeserved of the "Rollins treatment"), it's hard to imagine many people saying on camera "Black Flag sucked" or some such thing. A general bad showing all around.

Those hipsters were probably just in the shop anyway, they see Rollins and they wanna talk to him. It's not like they were being explicitly elitist as Rollins had warned. They didn't 'act out', they didn't seem to have bad intentions and when Rollins comes over to greet them he is the one who looks like 'a total paranoid, egomaniacal shithead'.

prettylikealaindelon, Wednesday, 3 November 2010 17:54 (thirteen years ago) link

i can't believe anyone would try to defend Rollins' behavior in that video. felt really bad for the hipsters and for Shirin Neshat.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Wednesday, 3 November 2010 17:56 (thirteen years ago) link

Not defending Henry, just saying that there is blame to go around. There are ways to decide to talk to someone that do not involve yelling things from off camera is all I'm saying. Of course Rollins was a pud about it, totally. What I am suggesting is that, just maybe, they knew he would be.

grandavis, Wednesday, 3 November 2010 18:11 (thirteen years ago) link

I would be very disappointed if Rollins behaved like Neil Gaiman in public.

Of all the offensive display names I've seen over the years, I'm kinda surprised this is the one to ruffle so many feathers. Oh yeah, wait a minute, the offender isn't part of the 77 clique. That explains it all. I mean, come on, if Whiney or, say, deej, used that display name as a "joke" it wouldn't have been such an issue.

Not to say I condone "rape joke" display names, mind, but this is such a weird one for people like Whiney to draw a fine line around.

yeah, seems like he has the self-awareness to know he is being a dick and know that he is going to be a dick, but not the self-control to stop himself. the way he held onto Shirin Neshat's shoulders while she has this incredibly uncomfortable, apologetic look on her face made me squirm. (xpost)

I thought Rollins was being funny like dumb stereotypes about music isn't he some jazz wanker or something? How can you take him seriously he is clearly being sarcastic or have you never heard his spoken word. Not like some band called Sexual Aids is some high minded art band....

But at this point even saying ^^^^ that is soooo fucking played. Why is this shit even still going on?

yeah otm...this vid is like a sort of perfect encapsulation of hipster hatred, rollins ensuring that he feels sneered at from minute one. i don't get how he says "when that girl started mouthing off", like she seemed sort of nice, and actually how fucking awkward and weird was his introduction for the iranian girl, who prob would have liked to just chat to some hipsters?

plus you know, so what even if she was a trustafarian, rollins is hardly living in central park.

and the sort of "i'm kind of a big deal" bit at the end...god, what a fool.

and a lot of their behaviour, imho, is down to being pretty damaged people in their own right, participating in a project that wasn't designed as a healing process, if that makes sense.

Punk attitude confuses the hell out of me. It's a rebellion against everything, including itself, so it's hard for me to tell when somebody is acting punk... or being punk in the face of perceived notions of punk? I don't know.

thing abt fucking w rollins is if youre into his music u kno hes like a rattlesnake

those ladies and the kid above kno who theyre dealing w and probably anticipated some confrontation with their comments (ladies: ha u wrote that book man; boy: going heavy metal eh fellas?) which is probably how they got their kicks, the boy handled himself rly well and trolled him back good tho

so yes rollins is/was a douche but i mean why taunt the guy unless you want to put up w his dickish antics

taunting him even slightly knowing how easily u can wind him up also makes u a bit of a douche tho not as much as rollins sure

but people liked to push rollins' buttons
