college puns are lol and creative!

J0rdan S., Thursday, 4 November 2010 02:58 (thirteen years ago) link

this is some interesting hair-splitting for someone who can't really distinguish the thousand shades of quality and nuance between most Gucci stuff and just gravitates to the obvious standouts. all i know is he hasn't really made any songs on the level of "Lemonade" or "Wasted" this year (although since "Lemonade" charted as a single this year it's definitely gonna be in my top 10)

Danble Perritration (some dude), Thursday, 4 November 2010 02:59 (thirteen years ago) link

'dats my life' is just acrobatic rapping & its cool as that but its not even close to his best song! this is what i meant when i talk about songwriting -- his choruses on zone 6, the beats, they're all so dry & flatline compared to 'gross' or 'trap talk' or certainly the best stuff on 'burrrprint.' theres no beat on 'mr zone 6' coming w/in miles of 'my shadow' and no verse is as emotionally compelling as 'frowney face'

corny. you knew that song last year

deej, Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:00 (thirteen years ago) link

hes def made songs better than 'wasted' this year although not nearly as many that would appeal to as wide an audience

deej, Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:01 (thirteen years ago) link

like you can call "dats my life" 'too writerly' or w/e too tom b snarl-rasp but like that beat + those verses are as good as shit like "excuse me" & "trap goin crazy" (which i love)

J0rdan S., Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:02 (thirteen years ago) link

college puns are lol & creative but youre comparing it w/ a real talk verse that bodies the most heart-on-sleeve z-ro verses -- all the trauma beneath the surface of the straightfaced lyrics, the its like a calloused lid on some extremely powerful experiences. its biggie-level autobiography

deej, Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:03 (thirteen years ago) link

tom b snarl-rasp

btw did you read the vado review

deej, Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:03 (thirteen years ago) link

some dude have you herad 'its alive'

samosa gibreel, Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:03 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i'm not talking about strictly about song quality but about memorable songs that feel like hits (beyond like Trey Songz sings on this so radio plays it etc.). although i guess i'm one of the only people here that's always really liked "Makin Love To The Money". and i always do year-end singles lists based on when a song was a hit, doesn't matter if i had an album it was on the previous year, don't know what's corny about that.

its alive is my favorite verse of his this year -- incredible stuff. i also think that drumma boy track that just got a video is pretty epically great

deej, Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:04 (thirteen years ago) link

this is like slam poetry now or something lol

― J0rdan S., Wednesday, November 3, 2010 10:55 PM (8 minutes ago)

lol yeah my jaw dropped i was like is this really happening

wakafledia (k3vin k.), Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:04 (thirteen years ago) link

i like makin love to the money now btw

deej, Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:04 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean irl -- the song is cool too

deej, Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:04 (thirteen years ago) link

y'know i'm not sure if i have heard "It's Alive" -- nobody made The Appeal sound too erm appealing but i guess that is one song people recommend from it

Danble Perritration (some dude), Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:04 (thirteen years ago) link

there are some totally dope beats on 'jewelery selection' like "first song back" & "electricity" but the "gross" beat is incredibly generic

i dunno it seems goofy -- like you dont trust your own ears & need them verified by popular consensus or something -- lemonade was in my top ten last year so

some dude otm

man couldnt disagree more -- the strings & effects are coca coca level dark

deej, Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:06 (thirteen years ago) link

stuff on the appeal that's as good as anything gucci has ever done -- "what's it gonna be", "it's alive"

it's 'popism' not insecurity -- i don't put album cuts on singles lists as a protest of indie fuxx who fill their P&J ballots with non-hits, i stick to singles, and a lot of songs don't become hits until the year after they appear on an album.

Danble Perritration (some dude), Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:08 (thirteen years ago) link

the second level of stuff is like: "trap talk", "party animal" (pretty dope "wasted" rip off if you ask me), "odog" (at least until wyclef takes over the last three minutes), "dollar sign"

J0rdan S., Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:09 (thirteen years ago) link

my favourite thing about 'gross' is gucci flirting w that lady and making her laugh (i mean, really, really gross) in the intro

samosa gibreel, Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:10 (thirteen years ago) link

uhhh, lemonade was a single before the end of the year

deej, Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:10 (thirteen years ago) link

like with "dollar sign" & "weirdo" & "brand new" you keep expecting them to be awesome cuz they're straight mixtape style stuff but they're not really that great unfortunately

J0rdan S., Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:10 (thirteen years ago) link

odog is dope except for the horrible choruses

party animal suffers by being way inferior to the drumma boy 'party animal'

deej, Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:10 (thirteen years ago) link

ok "It's Alive" is pretty cool -- don't know why this couldn't be the single instead of "Gucci Time" if they were rolling with Swizz

Danble Perritration (some dude), Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:11 (thirteen years ago) link

listen to "what's it gonna be", they just put out a video

its chart impact was all 2010, i didn't hear it on the radio in non-Gucciland until January

Danble Perritration (some dude), Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:12 (thirteen years ago) link

i still dont understand how having heard it on the radio makes it ok to vote for it now but whatever. its the same song then that it was when you first heard it.

just makes it seem like you were sleeping imo

deej, Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:14 (thirteen years ago) link

well clearly it's just a personal thing where shipley only votes for "singles", pretty self-explanatory

J0rdan S., Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:15 (thirteen years ago) link

only votes for singles once he knows theyre popular, you mean

like i said -- it had a video & was a single in 09

deej, Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:16 (thirteen years ago) link

it was also the first leak off the record

deej, Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Lemonade XD XD XD

in December 2009 when i was doing my year-end lists, "Wasted" was the single I'd been listening to all year and had had in my top 10 for a while, "Lemonade" was my favorite song on an album that had just dropped that month and it wasn't clear whether it was going to be a radio single or just a song that happened to have a video on YouTube and get talked about as an album standout.

Danble Perritration (some dude), Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:17 (thirteen years ago) link

want 2 argue w/deej but don't know anything about gucci mane :(

honkin' on joey kramer (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:17 (thirteen years ago) link

^^^^lol

deej, Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:18 (thirteen years ago) link

imo in 2010 anything that has an official video -- esp one so obvi not-generic like lemonade -- would qualify as a single immediately

deej, Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:19 (thirteen years ago) link

but lets talk about how awesome the 'it's alive' verse is

deej, Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:19 (thirteen years ago) link

"weirdo" off 'appeal' is good actually

J0rdan S., Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:19 (thirteen years ago) link

run laps around lames with my shoes untied / jumped the line walked in and watched the crowd divide

deej, Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:19 (thirteen years ago) link

verses at least

J0rdan S., Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:20 (thirteen years ago) link

liking a song more and considering it more significant once you hear it on the radio every day =/ sleeping on stuff or not having any convictions about your taste until it's popular

yeah i'm not saying it doesn't 'qualify' where like i would've said pshhhh album track you lame to someone who had it on an '09 list, i just personally prioritize things differently.

Danble Perritration (some dude), Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:21 (thirteen years ago) link

we're not talking about a sitch like "Throw Some D's" where that song was EVERYWHERE by the end of '06 but for some reason some lames thought of it as an '07 song

Danble Perritration (some dude), Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:28 (thirteen years ago) link

gross kinda stands apart from the other word songs but i've come to love it. whereas weirdo seems like a really second rate one of those to me.

really at this point i only go out of my way to listen to dollar sign and trap talk from appeal.

revisit 'whats it gonna be' again for real.

deej, Thursday, 4 November 2010 03:44 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah 'whats it gonna be' is def my fav on appeal. i massively enjoyed zone 6 + jewellery selection more than most stuff this year so i'm not getting on board with any of this peaking stuff.

bork bork dudes get swagged out, literally (tpp), Thursday, 4 November 2010 13:03 (thirteen years ago) link

he had so much more stuff in in '08 and '09. idk i argued this in my review of the album but i feel like hes been hidden from us
