I have someplace, the audiobook version of "Get in the van"

It ends with 5 50 mins of self and everyone else loathing "Someone gives me a book, I throw it into the trash" moanmoanmoan, then he postscripts it with a "things are different thesedays, but hey these kids now are missing out on a lot of fun"

Mark G, Thursday, 4 November 2010 14:44 (thirteen years ago) link

the best part about get in the van is "The Shed" where henry goes to stare into the darkness and cut himself with broken mirrors and eat coffee grounds and write in his journal.

being in "The Shed" is heavy.

actually all of get in the van rules....October 3rd...outside of Phoenix...why do these punks have to fuck with us? Who do they think I am? What do they think I can tell them? Do they think I care about their lives?

Today, I realized I belong only to myself...I can't even talk to Greg anymore...I ride in the back of the truck with the gear and stare at the ceiling....Before the show in Phoenix some skinhead threw a cup of piss on me. He got knifed by a Mexican bouncer. I didn't care. Fuck him.

I don't even know how long I've been out here. I don't even know what to do when we get off tour. I have no one. Only me.

the audiobook version of "Get in the van"

oh fuck the audio book is even BETTER!

it's like if you understand how to enjoy the whole rollinishness of rollins, it's fucking hilarious, silly, inspiring, ridiculous, admirable, contemtpible... everthing i swear

skreet walking cheeduh widda head fulla facepalm (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 4 November 2010 14:47 (thirteen years ago) link

I also want to mention that if I got to hang out with Shirin Neshat I would show her a MUCH NICER TIME than getting in chest-puffing matches at Cakeshop.

I'd also avoid using her as a prop

I've not heard the audiobook of GITV for like 12 years but my favourite bit was how excited he got when describing how Black Flag overfilled their bowls at all you can eat salad bars and got away with it

Joy Orbison wrapped in clingfilm (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 4 November 2010 15:00 (thirteen years ago) link

Hey, I used to do that. I could have been in Black Flag!

(you'd arrange bits of celery around the bowl like an upside-down straw boater, etc)

Mark G, Thursday, 4 November 2010 15:02 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah salad bars! they loved salad bars.

honestly though the book is striking, like honestly i can't imagine dragging yourself through those depths of disgusting conditions, horrible ppl, bitter cold, unbearable heat, senseless violence, etc for that long at a time...just sounds so awful

Blind date w/Jello Biafra vs. blind date w/Henry Rollins. Should be a game show.

dlp9001, Thursday, 4 November 2010 15:43 (thirteen years ago) link

the kid holds himself together pretty well considering...tho he is obv a fool.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Thursday, 4 November 2010 15:59 (thirteen years ago) link

He's just an inexperienced kid. Rollins looks like a bully.

thirdalternative, Thursday, 4 November 2010 18:39 (thirteen years ago) link

lol tho i didnt recognise neshat and i was all who is this lady who doesnt know what "hip" means also arte must be a hella weird station also shirin neshat is only okay imo but damaged is awesome. rollins is prolly the bourgeoisie and we should send him to the gulag come the revolution

plax (ico), Thursday, 4 November 2010 18:47 (thirteen years ago) link

also u call her ness-hat in my head

plax (ico), Thursday, 4 November 2010 18:48 (thirteen years ago) link

is that weird ferret head-turn look that Rollins gives when he hears his master's voice the same "hey youse kids, stop moshing" stare that MacKaye has?

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 4 November 2010 18:59 (thirteen years ago) link

Another big takeaway from that clip for me was a reminder of how short Rollins is, 'cause I met Neshat at one of her gallery openings a few years back and she is tiny.

that's not funny. (unperson), Thursday, 4 November 2010 18:59 (thirteen years ago) link

LOL just watched that video. So Rollins brings a camera crew in there, spends a few minutes pontificating on youth culture, labeling himself as an outsider, schooling the camera crew on 'hip music', etc., and as soon as a kid bursts his self-importance bubble, he jumps into her face and starts with the hipster bashing.

Think we all know who the real hipster is.

Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 4 November 2010 21:06 (thirteen years ago) link

he acts as though if henry rollins is in yr store with a camera crew it's somehow not ok to say "oh, weird, it's henry rollins"

call all destroyer, Thursday, 4 November 2010 21:07 (thirteen years ago) link

Then he immediately puts his arm around this poor girl and goes on and on about how awesome he is for chillin with a muslim exile. While all these hipsters are sitting around drinking he's MAKING A DIFFERENCE!

Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 4 November 2010 21:08 (thirteen years ago) link

He's like Bill O'Reilly or something.

Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 4 November 2010 21:09 (thirteen years ago) link

i'd feel awesome chilling with exiles, too, to be honest.

This is just like a scene from Louie, except that we don't Shirin Neshat tell him at the end that she really just wants to take a cab home alone and not to call her again.

Yeah, that's Rollins alright.

Joy Orbison wrapped in clingfilm (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 16:34 (thirteen years ago) link

You know how older Americans get absurdly aggrieved at the idea that they’ve done something racially insensitive — as if this is the most profound and dehumanizing suggestion that can ever be made about a person? A lot of younger urbanites are reaching this point with the phrase “trust fund.”

not sure about this - I mean it might well be true, I don't live in the US, but one of these things is open to interpretation and the other is something you basically either do or don't have. So I feel like it's pretty reasonable for ppl to find it lame and tiresome that it's passed/passing into the lexicon of 'generic insult available to level at total strangers'

Joy Orbison wrapped in clingfilm (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 16:39 (thirteen years ago) link

i find the entire trust fund thing idiotic.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 16:41 (thirteen years ago) link

the still shot on that article is hilarious

DJP, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 16:44 (thirteen years ago) link

But it’s possible that calling out “GET IN THE VAN” at Henry Rollins is more like if you saw Tony the Tiger filming something at your local bar and called out “THEY’RE GRRREAT!”

<3 this

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 16:47 (thirteen years ago) link

imo a lot of the people flinging the term "trust fund" around would be at a loss to really tell you what a trust fund is or how one works - the point of the term is to accuse somebody of being rich. which I think is why some people who're perceived as rich get pissed -- they're like "I don't actually know what a trust fund is and you're calling me a 'trust fund kid,' fuck, I'll bet you don't actually know what one is, either, you poseur, fuck you" & this applies to Rollins - five bucks says his def. of "trust fund" wouldn't go very far in explaining how the word "trust" works there

honkin' on joey kramer (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 16:53 (thirteen years ago) link

nb if I lose that bet I will have to withdraw the five bucks from my trust fund which can take weeks so be ready for that if you take the bet

honkin' on joey kramer (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 16:54 (thirteen years ago) link

wait what?

plax (ico), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 16:55 (thirteen years ago) link

no i get it
it mostly comes down to being told "you're not so special i bet you had HELP to get where you're at you didn't get it by HARD WORK like i did"
which is nonsense, rags to riches stories don't prove anything and many if not most of the world's most important, intelligent, creative, charitable people came from backgrounds wealthy enough to elevate their opportunities to act
but the accusation is 1/2 you are the bourgeois enemy and 1/2 you didn't earn your life it was given to you
would like to see rollins try that nonsense with, to pick two dumbass reference points out of the ether, angelina jolie or willow smith who would likely respond with YEAH motherfucker i'm RICH AS HELL

big steve vai fan (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 17:12 (thirteen years ago) link

I am pretty sure that Willow Smith would never say that for fear of getting her mouth washed out with soap

DJP, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 17:13 (thirteen years ago) link

i find the entire trust fund thing idiotic.

^This. Also, trust funders in NYC? Nooooo wayyyy!

Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 17:22 (thirteen years ago) link

willow can afford delicious soap iirc

big steve vai fan (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 17:23 (thirteen years ago) link

Ha ha, doesn't every person born in the UK after 2002 have a Trust Fund (or at least until the Tories get (got) their way?) which will make "trust fund" as insult de jour pretty passe.

When Henry joined Black Flag (according to GITV), he sold his icecream business, sublet his apt, and was off.

Mark G, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 17:36 (thirteen years ago) link

he quit his job at baskin & robbins, not quite the same thing?

Calumny (stevie), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 17:44 (thirteen years ago) link

no no he invented ice cream and sold the patent to baskin robbins

jabbascript (am0n), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 17:49 (thirteen years ago) link

i missed the part where rollins called the kids "over-tattooed", kind of rich from the man that is probably as directly responsible as anyone for indie tattoo "culture"

corned beef swag (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 17:53 (thirteen years ago) link

I think the trust fund resentment is mostly directed toward people who spend a disproportionate amount of their time making bad art and complaining about how "broke" they are while living in huge Williamsburg lofts. It's quite staggering how many of those people populate NYC at present.

Position Position, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 17:56 (thirteen years ago) link

do you guys think maybe some of it was staged? first, rollins plugs the record store, then the lady plugs her band, then at the end rollins plugs his book, and in the middle they try to plug the exile but she doesn't really have anything to sell.

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 18:00 (thirteen years ago) link

Suddenly the person who called Rollins “paranoid” about how he’s perceived is scrambling to assert that she doesn’t have nearly as much money as he does and respects Neshat “a whole lot.” In a few short moves, Rollins has turned things around: Instead of justifying himself to the young people, they’re justifying themselves to him.

TBF, Rollins actually made an assumption (if not an accusation) about the young woman that she was responding to. She wasn't just freaking out because someone shouted her name or yelled "Sexual Aids!" Not quite the same level of paranoia.
