Angels starting pitcher Jered Weaver starts to get up after being hit on the foot with a line drive by Seattle's Jose Vidro in the fourth inning on Wednesday. Although Weaver gave up five runs early, the Angels fought back to tie the score. Weaver allowed 12 hits and six runs in six innings.

John McLaren answered the question before anybody asked it.

"I'm not taking Weaver out," the Mariners manager said before the game. "At one time, he was an innings-eater, and he was winning. He was the best pitcher we had there, for about a six-game stretch."

That would be Jeff Weaver, sometimes Dream Weaver, sometimes Scream Weaver, and still a Mariners starter, at least for the time being. And so the yo-yo career arch continues — bounced from the Angels last season, World Series hero in St. Louis, worst pitcher in baseball earlier this season, best pitcher on the Mariners later on, pitching now like it's April once again.

Weaver turned in another forgettable outing Thursday night: 1-1/3 innings, six hits, five runs, all earned. In his past three starts, Weaver finished nine innings, while offenses feasted for 16 runs.

Reporters asked McLaren on Thursday if he would replace Weaver with, say, Jorge Campillo or Ryan Feierabend, starting pitching options already on the roster. McLaren said he would sleep on it, and he wondered aloud a day later whether Weaver could turn everything around. Again.

"We know he's capable," McLaren said. "I don't know if it's confidence ... I know he's not attacking the strike zone like he was."

Weaver's recent struggles combined with that of veterans Miguel Batista and Jarrod Washburn — the trio is winless since Aug. 23 — mirror the Mariners' slide out of contention. In their past 12 starts combined, the trio is 0-7 with a 7.76 earned-run average.

Starter Jeff Weaver broke a fingernail on his middle finger mid-game and had the blood start gushing. It was so bad that Weaver, who had hit just five batters all season, hit three in the space of three innings.

After he hit second baseman Howie Kendrick, he had to come out of the game.

"I definitely had good stuff today," said Weaver, who put the Mariners in a 3-0 hole by giving up homers to Casey Kotchman and Macier Izturis in the second. "But after I broke the nail, there was blood all over the place.

"I didn't want to come out of the game, but I didn't want to hurt anyone ... I wasn't about to keep pitching not knowing where the ball was going."

ANAHEIM, Calif. — This wasn't what Mariners starter Jeff Weaver had hoped to be feeling one year after being part of several on-field celebrations.

Weaver was a mainstay in a St. Louis Cardinals rotation that captured a division title, two playoff series and a World Series championship last year. He'd been in the middle of on-field exuberance after each of those, winning the clinching game against the Detroit Tigers.

One year later, he sat in a silent visitors' clubhouse. The smell of champagne from the nearby Los Angeles Angels clubhouse slowly began drifting over as Weaver's teammates packed for a long flight home.

"It's definitely disappointing," he said. "That's why I made a decision to come here. I thought it was a team that was ready to turn the corner. It just seems like a lot of stuff that was going bad caught up."

Weaver's slow start and sputtering finish was one reason the Mariners dropped out of contention. He has just seven wins and there's an outside chance he's pitched his final game for Seattle after tearing a nail in the fourth inning.

Seattle trailed 3-0 at the time after a pair of second-inning home runs yielded by Weaver — the eighth time he has allowed two or more in a game this season. He was trying to throw a cut-fastball in the fourth when he felt the nail rip along its side.

Weaver tried to continue pitching but hit three batters in his final three innings as he struggled to find control.

Jeff Weaver is unemployed, three weeks before the start of the season. The former Dodgers and Angels pitcher won the game that clinched the 2006 World Series championship for the St. Louis Cardinals, but he is 15-27 with a 5.96 earned-run average the last two seasons.

The Washington Nationals and St. Louis Cardinals have expressed interest, said his younger brother, Angels pitcher Jered Weaver. Jeff's recent numbers might not sparkle, but he averages 190 innings [that's 190 HEALTHY innings -- ed.] a season with a career ERA of 4.72, in many years enough for a job offer if not a lucrative contract.

Jeff is 31 and is not retiring, Jered said.

"He wants to get four or five more years in," Jered said. "He's working out and trying to wait it out, just trying to get ready."
