This is just like a scene from Louie, except that we don't Shirin Neshat tell him at the end that she really just wants to take a cab home alone and not to call her again.

You know how older Americans get absurdly aggrieved at the idea that they’ve done something racially insensitive — as if this is the most profound and dehumanizing suggestion that can ever be made about a person? A lot of younger urbanites are reaching this point with the phrase “trust fund.”
not sure about this - I mean it might well be true, I don't live in the US, but one of these things is open to interpretation and the other is something you basically either do or don't have. So I feel like it's pretty reasonable for ppl to find it lame and tiresome that it's passed/passing into the lexicon of 'generic insult available to level at total strangers'
― Joy Orbison wrapped in clingfilm (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 16:39 (thirteen years ago) link
i find the entire trust fund thing idiotic.

But it’s possible that calling out “GET IN THE VAN” at Henry Rollins is more like if you saw Tony the Tiger filming something at your local bar and called out “THEY’RE GRRREAT!”
<3 this
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 16:47 (thirteen years ago) link
imo a lot of the people flinging the term "trust fund" around would be at a loss to really tell you what a trust fund is or how one works - the point of the term is to accuse somebody of being rich. which I think is why some people who're perceived as rich get pissed -- they're like "I don't actually know what a trust fund is and you're calling me a 'trust fund kid,' fuck, I'll bet you don't actually know what one is, either, you poseur, fuck you" & this applies to Rollins - five bucks says his def. of "trust fund" wouldn't go very far in explaining how the word "trust" works there
― honkin' on joey kramer (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 16:53 (thirteen years ago) link
nb if I lose that bet I will have to withdraw the five bucks from my trust fund which can take weeks so be ready for that if you take the bet

no i get it it mostly comes down to being told "you're not so special i bet you had HELP to get where you're at you didn't get it by HARD WORK like i did"which is nonsense, rags to riches stories don't prove anything and many if not most of the world's most important, intelligent, creative, charitable people came from backgrounds wealthy enough to elevate their opportunities to actbut the accusation is 1/2 you are the bourgeois enemy and 1/2 you didn't earn your life it was given to you would like to see rollins try that nonsense with, to pick two dumbass reference points out of the ether, angelina jolie or willow smith who would likely respond with YEAH motherfucker i'm RICH AS HELL
― big steve vai fan (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 17:12 (thirteen years ago) link

― corned beef swag (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 17:53 (thirteen years ago) link
I think the trust fund resentment is mostly directed toward people who spend a disproportionate amount of their time making bad art and complaining about how "broke" they are while living in huge Williamsburg lofts. It's quite staggering how many of those people populate NYC at present.
― Position Position, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 17:56 (thirteen years ago) link
do you guys think maybe some of it was staged? first, rollins plugs the record store, then the lady plugs her band, then at the end rollins plugs his book, and in the middle they try to plug the exile but she doesn't really have anything to sell.
― Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 18:00 (thirteen years ago) link
Suddenly the person who called Rollins “paranoid” about how he’s perceived is scrambling to assert that she doesn’t have nearly as much money as he does and respects Neshat “a whole lot.” In a few short moves, Rollins has turned things around: Instead of justifying himself to the young people, they’re justifying themselves to him.
TBF, Rollins actually made an assumption (if not an accusation) about the young woman that she was responding to. She wasn't just freaking out because someone shouted her name or yelled "Sexual Aids!" Not quite the same level of paranoia.

The (lack of) respect thing is key I think. Explains why merely shouting "Get in the Van" equates to "mouthing off" in his view. You mouth off to authority figures you should be showing respect to. If you're not in awe of him and all he's done for the cause of Coolness, you're mouthing off.

For the first time, Los Angeles public radio station KCRW (89.9FM and KCRW.com) will shine a spotlight on our most well-known DJ Henry Rollins, in a one-of-a-kind live event.
On Thursday, December 9 at 8pm, KCRW will present an exclusive listening party at the Echoplex which will serve as a benefit for the station. Rollins has been searching his musical vaults and will come armed with top selections from his personal music collection – some of which have never been heard before -- to share with fans. In a living room-style setting, anecdotes in tow, he’ll share a night of unforgettable tunes and stories.
“I will play stuff that I am unable to on my regular show, due to the rare nature of the material. I have been planning the set for weeks and am so excited to be able to get some truly unique tracks to your ears,” said Rollins. “Basically, the Echoplex will be my living room, you are the guests and I am playing some of my coolest cuts from decades of gathering, complete with the story around the track and its acquisition.”
