I can't tell if this is completely serious or just a piece of high-art sarcasm, but it's worth reading: http://diversityawareness.wordpress.com/2010/11/05/nbcs-community-needs-a-mexican-character/

NBC’s Community needs a Mexican character
Posted on November 5, 2010 by Macon Trisdale

NBC’s COMMUNITY NEEDS A MEXICAN CHARACTER. I applaud NBC for their effort in bringing in a diverse cast of characters to a television show. The mediocre comedy entitled Community has several minorities represented… They have a muslim, two black characters, an Asian, several women, a gay dean, and a senior citizen. It would seem that they have all of there bases covered.

But there is one minority that they have completely and unconscionably ignored. That’s right. Our friends to the south… THE MEXICANS. How could they have ignored such a culturally rich and prominent culture? Mexicans are plentiful in community colleges, so why have the Latinos been excluded from the show? My studies show that Mexicans make up a whopping 19% of all community college attendees. And don’t forget all the janitors and maintenance men that are Mexican. America’s community colleges are basically brimming with Mexicans. So why are they being ignored?

I have a few theories as to why Mexicans have been so vociferously excluded:

* Dan Harmon (Community creator) is ignorant
* Dan Harmon is fearful of low ratings due to white people’s hate of Mexicans
* NBC does not allow too many minorities in it’s comedies

Maybe not all of these are true; but if even one of them is true, then it is a despicable situation. Why aren’t more people clamoring about this issue? Don’t people care about inclusiveness, tolerance, and love? Why is the main character a white man? WHAT CAN WE DO?

I’ll tell you what we can do. We can email Joel McHale and Chevy Chaese and Dan Harmon and inform them of this issue. We can start a petition and send it to NBC. We can talk to our neighbors and co-workers about this issue. We need to create a meaningful dialogue about this issue. Our Mexican brothers and sisters are entitled to have the same equality as the other minorities represented in Community.

Love how surreal and absurd this season is. Big improvement over the last season.

thought this was the best episode of this season so far. excellent modfam this week too.

Calumny (stevie), Tuesday, 9 November 2010 23:47 (thirteen years ago) link

I think the first season was pretty uneven but maybe people didn't notice because the show was new and exciting. So basically IMO second season is as good as first season but only because people kind of overrated season one (probably including me).

The only episode that has out-and-out sucked so far this season was the Jesus episode, Shirley just isn't a very funny character and the whole thing just seemed off. I didn't find Halloween as amazing as everyone else but it still was good. Trampoline episode was great.

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 9 November 2010 23:47 (thirteen years ago) link

imo the show really hit its stride with last season's xmas episode and it's been riding a pretty consistent wave ever since, some episodes being better than others.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 23:49 (thirteen years ago) link

you know which episode deserves a critical reevaluation? the jack black ep. the fact that they put the stereotypical jack black character in the show and then made sure to film the awkward five-second silences following each of his outbursts was genius. not to mention keeping in what sounded like genuine line flubs to hammer home his patheticness even more.

otm. also i loved the cheap opening credits/timing gag.

apparently this week is a bottle episode, so i'm anxious to see how it works out.

Gukbe, Thursday, 11 November 2010 06:29 (thirteen years ago) link

This show got so brilliantly funny so fast I fear for its future. Tonight's ep FTW.

I must have gone all-in earlier than I remembered. I wonder what episode it was that made me a complete convert.

Wikipedia says that was the fourth episode, "Social Psychology".

whats a bottle episode?

Networks occasionally ask shows to do an episode on the cheap to create budget space for the more expensive ones. These feature minimal cast members and sets. Breaking Bad's hunt the fly episode, for instance, or the Don and Peggy-heavy "suitcase" episode in the recent mad men season.

So I'd guess no Dean or Starburns or whatever next week, maybe no Chang, just the study group stuck in a single location dealing with character stuff.

Clay, Thursday, 11 November 2010 09:48 (thirteen years ago) link

suitcase episode had hella-expensive ghost cgi tho

"Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the very best bottle episode ever produced."

high expectations considering *that* friends episode is basically the best friends episode along with chandler in a box... which is essentially the second best bottle episode.

Has this show delivered anything truly amazing after the lackluster season premiere?

Cunga, Thursday, 11 November 2010 22:02 (thirteen years ago) link

trishyb, Thursday, 11 November 2010 22:05 (thirteen years ago) link

Ugh, people who keep expecting another paintball episode don't really get this show and, tbh, should probably not even be watching it. This season has been outstanding, and last night's was amazing.

sorry, forgot i did a 2am rant. i only brought up paintball cos the zombie ep was trying and failing so hard to be a sequel to it - in fact i very much agree that paintball (amazing tho it was) was not the be all and end all of this show's former greatness. funnily enough i went on to really enjoy the trampoline one but it's been the first for a long while.

simplistically speaking the whole thing is kinda reminding me of the diff between simpsons then and simpsons now, trying to compete with family guy etc - endless reffy zings and non sequiturs to the point of unravelling the ties that originally bound it together

r|t|c, Thursday, 11 November 2010 22:06 (thirteen years ago) link

it's hard to pin down though cos the lawyer episode (2nd this season iirc) was probably the least random and most sitcommy of them all but was still easily the worst ever.

r|t|c, Thursday, 11 November 2010 22:10 (thirteen years ago) link

all the handwringing over whether this show is good/funny right now is hilarious to me. this show is good, everyone! every episode isn't the state of the sitcom union and we don't need to reassess community's "legacy" or prospects based on whether a gimmick worked for you week to week.

Clay, Thursday, 11 November 2010 22:14 (thirteen years ago) link

I thought the lawyer episode was pretty fucking funny, esp. Drew Carey and his hand
