no i get it
it mostly comes down to being told "you're not so special i bet you had HELP to get where you're at you didn't get it by HARD WORK like i did"
which is nonsense, rags to riches stories don't prove anything and many if not most of the world's most important, intelligent, creative, charitable people came from backgrounds wealthy enough to elevate their opportunities to act
but the accusation is 1/2 you are the bourgeois enemy and 1/2 you didn't earn your life it was given to you
would like to see rollins try that nonsense with, to pick two dumbass reference points out of the ether, angelina jolie or willow smith who would likely respond with YEAH motherfucker i'm RICH AS HELL

I am pretty sure that Willow Smith would never say that for fear of getting her mouth washed out with soap

DJP, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 17:13 (thirteen years ago) link

i find the entire trust fund thing idiotic.

^This. Also, trust funders in NYC? Nooooo wayyyy!

Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 17:22 (thirteen years ago) link

willow can afford delicious soap iirc

big steve vai fan (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 17:23 (thirteen years ago) link

Ha ha, doesn't every person born in the UK after 2002 have a Trust Fund (or at least until the Tories get (got) their way?) which will make "trust fund" as insult de jour pretty passe.

When Henry joined Black Flag (according to GITV), he sold his icecream business, sublet his apt, and was off.

Mark G, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 17:36 (thirteen years ago) link

he quit his job at baskin & robbins, not quite the same thing?

Calumny (stevie), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 17:44 (thirteen years ago) link

no no he invented ice cream and sold the patent to baskin robbins

jabbascript (am0n), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 17:49 (thirteen years ago) link

i missed the part where rollins called the kids "over-tattooed", kind of rich from the man that is probably as directly responsible as anyone for indie tattoo "culture"

corned beef swag (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 17:53 (thirteen years ago) link

I think the trust fund resentment is mostly directed toward people who spend a disproportionate amount of their time making bad art and complaining about how "broke" they are while living in huge Williamsburg lofts. It's quite staggering how many of those people populate NYC at present.

do you guys think maybe some of it was staged? first, rollins plugs the record store, then the lady plugs her band, then at the end rollins plugs his book, and in the middle they try to plug the exile but she doesn't really have anything to sell.

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 18:00 (thirteen years ago) link

Suddenly the person who called Rollins “paranoid” about how he’s perceived is scrambling to assert that she doesn’t have nearly as much money as he does and respects Neshat “a whole lot.” In a few short moves, Rollins has turned things around: Instead of justifying himself to the young people, they’re justifying themselves to him.

TBF, Rollins actually made an assumption (if not an accusation) about the young woman that she was responding to. She wasn't just freaking out because someone shouted her name or yelled "Sexual Aids!" Not quite the same level of paranoia.

The (lack of) respect thing is key I think. Explains why merely shouting "Get in the Van" equates to "mouthing off" in his view. You mouth off to authority figures you should be showing respect to. If you're not in awe of him and all he's done for the cause of Coolness, you're mouthing off.

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 18:09 (thirteen years ago) link

rollins is a terrible actor, but his rollins in that video is note-perfect.

Hah, fun fact: that bass player was/is also in Flin Flon, who have a great drummer too! (addendum to nabiscos story ...)

Anyway, Philip prob OTM:

Ha, I had a Flin Flon mention in the first draft, but had to cut it! It's a lot easier to hear interesting bass playing in Flin Flon than in Bratmobile.

For the first time, Los Angeles public radio station KCRW (89.9FM and KCRW.com) will shine a spotlight on our most well-known DJ Henry Rollins, in a one-of-a-kind live event.

On Thursday, December 9 at 8pm, KCRW will present an exclusive listening party at the Echoplex which will serve as a benefit for the station. Rollins has been searching his musical vaults and will come armed with top selections from his personal music collection – some of which have never been heard before -- to share with fans. In a living room-style setting, anecdotes in tow, he’ll share a night of unforgettable tunes and stories.

“I will play stuff that I am unable to on my regular show, due to the rare nature of the material. I have been planning the set for weeks and am so excited to be able to get some truly unique tracks to your ears,” said Rollins. “Basically, the Echoplex will be my living room, you are the guests and I am playing some of my coolest cuts from decades of gathering, complete with the story around the track and its acquisition.”

as much as he gets cunted on, he was behind some pretty epic re-releases and no doubt has a dope collection and ~possibly~ a wealth of unheard shit.

I looked at that link am0n just posted a while back and he was buying lots of signed copies of UK Subs, Lurkers & Ruts singles for like $100 each. I guess that makes sense since he did that gig singing for the Ruts a couple of years ago.

Know The (ledge) (sic), Thursday, 11 November 2010 22:44 (thirteen years ago) link

Looking at Rollins' "they think I'm old and bourgeoisie, while they're avant-garde proletariat" remark, it makes his later introduction of Shirin Neshat "as an exiled Iranian photographer" as some sort of gross trump card, like dating her qualifies as a great piece of outsider art that they can't equal.

Cunga, Thursday, 11 November 2010 23:00 (thirteen years ago) link

Years and years ago there was a rumor that Rollins had recorded a version of "You Don't Have To Be A Star, Baby (To Be In My Show)" with Mary J. Blige. I always kinda hoped it was true.

that's not funny. (unperson), Thursday, 11 November 2010 23:18 (thirteen years ago) link
