1976 Peter Gabriel + 1986 Natalie Merchant + 1996 Bjork = Arcade Fire chick

Tub Girl Time Machine (Phil D.), Sunday, 14 November 2010 18:59 (thirteen years ago) link

don't think i'm just kneejerk hating on Arcade Fire when i say the digital short's second half was totally unnecessary.

the monologue was omitted from the OnDemand rerun, so if it was for musical clearance issues i'm grateful that i was spared hearing Scarjo sing

deej otm (some dude), Monday, 15 November 2010 20:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Er, the Arcade Fire portion of that Digital Short was the only reason it was worth existing. Otherwise it was just another lol lame Sandberg can rap! ish.

how so? it didn't make it any funnier, it was just a mildly unexpected addition to the joke that had already been established, whereas good Lonely Island stuff elevates the premise or does a weird twist at the end.

anyone else love the Brokeback Mountain sketch at the end? shit killed me, i think i'm starting to like Vanessa Bayer.

some dude, Monday, 15 November 2010 20:35 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't get your complaint, I mean, how is Arcade Fire suddenly bursting in and joining in NOT a "weird twist at the end"? You saw that coming? I get if you think it was stupid, but I feel like it was totally in line with the Lonely Island stuff.

Loved that kid actress skit, yeah. Also, loved the Unstoppable skit because it made fun of exactly the same things I've been laughing at since I saw the original trailer.

"I am a fairly respected poster." (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 15 November 2010 20:38 (thirteen years ago) link

the "unstoppable" sketch was p much the only funny thing in this episode

thomas smangalter (J0rdan S.), Monday, 15 November 2010 20:40 (thirteen years ago) link

like i said, it was unexpected, but mildly so. maybe less so if they weren't the musical guest of the episode, but i mean it wasn't outta nowhere WTF crazy or anything. (xpost)

some dude, Monday, 15 November 2010 20:40 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm beginning to feel like there's a lot of SNL parodies that I haven't been fully appreciating because I don't have cable and don't otherwise watch much TV. Had no idea, for instance, that Millionaire Matchmaker was a real show.

jaymc, Monday, 15 November 2010 20:41 (thirteen years ago) link

I have cable and get most of the references and wish they would do FEWER parodies.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 15 November 2010 20:45 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, I had no clue that was a real thing.

Feel like the school kid skit was just an excuse to get ScarJo in a schoolgirl outfit. Hader's facial expressions keep those Hollywood Dish skits from getting as old as they otherwise would.

was nick zinner (the guitarist the yeah yeah yeahs? i think that's his name.) lurking in the back during sprawl ii?

phantompenguin, Monday, 15 November 2010 20:47 (thirteen years ago) link

i swear to god bill hader used to work in the cafeteria at my old job. Probably not.

Mark Chmuras Hot Tub Crime Machine (chrisv2010), Monday, 15 November 2010 20:48 (thirteen years ago) link

looked like Nick Zinner playing w/ Arcade Fire for sure.

dan selzer, Monday, 15 November 2010 21:59 (thirteen years ago) link

they really need to knock it off with fake telemundo talk show sketch

bloc trebek-quois (donna rouge), Monday, 15 November 2010 22:06 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh yeah, I blocked that out completely because it is the worst ever. Also, hate that they even had to shoehorn Wiig into that.

"I am a fairly respected poster." (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 15 November 2010 22:07 (thirteen years ago) link

anyone else love the Brokeback Mountain sketch at the end? shit killed me, i think i'm starting to like Vanessa Bayer.

yeah, that one and her character in the millionaire matchmaker sketch were my 'i could love you' moments with her

bloc trebek-quois (donna rouge), Monday, 15 November 2010 22:08 (thirteen years ago) link

and scarjo kind of sucked all around on this i thought

bloc trebek-quois (donna rouge), Monday, 15 November 2010 22:09 (thirteen years ago) link

i never have high hopes for scarjo as a host and in comedy movies she's almost always a dud, but generally on SNL i think she does alright

some dude, Monday, 15 November 2010 22:36 (thirteen years ago) link

Generally but she did kinda suck this time.

you're not là-bas of me (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 02:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Going to see Paul Brittain perform at iO in Chicago on Tuesday. Excited!

Abby's got Rachel Maddow's look and facial things down, but the voice mannerisms seem a little wrong.

Kenan as Charlie Rangel = lolsamillion

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 21 November 2010 04:32 (thirteen years ago) link

the only thing that skit was missing was a good denzel washington impression

blogosfeer of a black planet (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 21 November 2010 04:36 (thirteen years ago) link

on the last two shows, there were NO real "everyone stare at crazy kristin wiig" sketch - of which there's usually multiple in an episode. it's not that she wasn't around, or not even doing repeat bits, but that she was always paired with an equally nutty character so there was more going on than just her beating a bit to death by her lonesome. reakky hope this is a trend they'll continue.

da croupier, Sunday, 21 November 2010 04:37 (thirteen years ago) link

man i love sudeikis

Whatshername is pretty good as Miley.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 21 November 2010 04:43 (thirteen years ago) link

Penelope sketch feels like it's dying.

Gukbe, Sunday, 21 November 2010 04:54 (thirteen years ago) link

It died two years ago.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 21 November 2010 04:55 (thirteen years ago) link

diddy-dirty money is so awkward

blogosfeer of a black planet (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 21 November 2010 04:55 (thirteen years ago) link

For real. Isn't it time he just started going by Sean Combs for everything? Like, Sean Combs & Dirty Money would sound much better.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 21 November 2010 04:58 (thirteen years ago) link

Queen sketch was surprisingly hilarious.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 21 November 2010 05:04 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah that was good -- armisen as the queen qualifies as actual absurd humor

blogosfeer of a black planet (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 21 November 2010 05:05 (thirteen years ago) link

oh shit this is killing me

blogosfeer of a black planet (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 21 November 2010 05:15 (thirteen years ago) link

two weeks in a row that the funniest thing in the show has been a food network impersonation

blogosfeer of a black planet (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 21 November 2010 05:16 (thirteen years ago) link

no clue who he is imitating so not really funny at all

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 21 November 2010 05:26 (thirteen years ago) link

tbf, he could've gone there on Mad TV.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 21 November 2010 05:26 (thirteen years ago) link

Enjoying this episode more than any of the other ones I've seen recently, but that might just be Anne Hathaway.

Gukbe, Sunday, 21 November 2010 05:36 (thirteen years ago) link

I just learned that Fred Armisen could be cast in the Rick Moranis roll for Ghostbusters III in a pinch.

I've never seen Florence perform live before, so I don't know if she's fallen prey to SNL's notoriously bad soundsystem (monitors anyone?) or if she just has no control over her voice at all...but this is DIRE.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 21 November 2010 05:52 (thirteen years ago) link

I can't stand her music so I'm not a good judge. It always sounds shit to me.

Gukbe, Sunday, 21 November 2010 05:54 (thirteen years ago) link

fake kids movie soundtrack as a lame excuse for people to throw out brief musician impressions again.

Gukbe, Sunday, 21 November 2010 05:59 (thirteen years ago) link

People who SHOULD host Saturday Night Live that probably never will:

J.K. Simmons
Reggie Watts
Donald Glover & Danny Pudi
Martha Plimpton
Andrew W.K.
The cast of iCarly
