He gives the best performance in The Good Shepherd, and is totally fine in True Confessions.

A bunch of those are better than Cape Fear.

i think i saw The Mission in high school, but can't remember anything about it.

It's good. Great last shot.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 6 June 2008 14:18 (fifteen years ago) link

tempted to vote 'analyze this'

I seem to recall him being OK in "This Boy's Life" but it's been a while and I only saw it once, so "Meet the Parents."

Pancakes Hackman, Friday, 6 June 2008 15:28 (fifteen years ago) link

going with the mission

max, Friday, 6 June 2008 15:39 (fifteen years ago) link

De Niro is a little too sketch-comedy-ready in "This Boy's Life" and is outacted by DiCaprio.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 6 June 2008 15:41 (fifteen years ago) link

the Mission is an incredible film. certainly should be iconic. it's the best in this list (that I've seen, which is admittedly a pretty small sampling)

akm, Friday, 6 June 2008 17:27 (fifteen years ago) link

Brazil!

I love Meet the Parents (2000), Analyze This (1999), and Angel Heart (1987).

Hide and Seek (2005) is a very enjoyable crap movie.

Pete Scholtes, Saturday, 7 June 2008 02:34 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, voted The Mission here. Also, all-time favorite scores list.

kenan, Saturday, 7 June 2008 03:54 (fifteen years ago) link

nice, where'd you score it?

s1ocki, Saturday, 7 June 2008 04:12 (fifteen years ago) link

From Ennio Morricone himself.

Know your source.

The Bridge of San Luis Rey (2004)

wtf? when did I miss this movie getting made?

Eric H., Saturday, 7 June 2008 04:25 (fifteen years ago) link

it was awful

s1ocki, Saturday, 7 June 2008 04:27 (fifteen years ago) link

Also, I'm biased towards De Palma obv, but how is his Meet the Parents perf not iconic and his Greetings/Hi Mom perfs are?

Eric H., Saturday, 7 June 2008 04:27 (fifteen years ago) link

xpost - I'm sure it was, I just didn't ever know of its existence until just now.

Eric H., Saturday, 7 June 2008 04:28 (fifteen years ago) link

I was just going to ask about 'Greetings' and 'Hi, Mom!'. Please not iconic.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

angel heart is terrible in ludicrously entertaining ways.

voted for The Score, so easy to watch. his performance is phoned in but it works for the character.

ten years pass...

The last half-hour of 15 Minutes, after De Niro checks out, is the most ludicrous nonsense I've seen in quite some time. As late De Niro goes, he's actually pretty good before that.

clemenza, Sunday, 17 February 2019 00:22 (five years ago) link

i should have included "Cop Land" in this one.

omar little, Sunday, 17 February 2019 00:25 (five years ago) link

The Fan wasn’t good overall, but playing a sports-radio-obsessed nut definitely fit his skill set.

... (Eazy), Sunday, 17 February 2019 00:26 (five years ago) link

So was 'Wag the Dog' robbed or is it iconic?

character is sort of a remix of his taxi driver/king of comedy thing, no?

Those two, and even the Jackie Brown character in some ways.

I think what's on and what's not is fine, allowing for some subjectivity. Myself, I wouldn't distinguish between The Last Tycoon and New York, New York--I'd have them both on (in that they're both in the middle of his peak years, and he's good in both) or both off (in that they're both minor in terms of the films around them).

clemenza, Sunday, 17 February 2019 02:25 (five years ago) link

True Confessions was considered something of a little masterpiece when I were a lad. It’s really fallen off the radar since I guess.

piscesx, Sunday, 17 February 2019 03:23 (five years ago) link

i watched that on a strong recommendation a few years ago. i like some of the other films by that director, ulu grosbard, a lot. but i found it, just ok.
