I don't have a soulsuck account. all these acts should be easy to find though. later when I'm not on deadline I'll compile a list of songs. Everything should have Paulina Rubio's current hit single, "Dame Una Tequila," at the very least, and Molotov's "Amateur," which is a spanish hip-hop rock version of "Rock Me Amadeus."

2Mex (hip hop)
Los Nativos (hip hop)
Kico Rangel or any great old mambo records (I'd love to track down a compilation myself)

Sourpuss, but Cuban music at a Mexican-themed party? Anyway, paz. I'm not trying to start one of our old style fights.

the 'tijuana sessions vol 1' compilation by the nortec collective is a ton of fun...

I highly recommend the Tigres del Norte tribute album. It's got some great covers and bands on it. I can't find the name of it anywhere, but it exists I swear. Check it out.

Also, you can never go wrong with Cafe Tacuba, particularly anything of "Re."

Americans use us for wiping their asses
They treat us like pig shit
Have balls and be men
A... trip north
Centuries pass and our race is fucked up
American bastards, they give us dick and...
Forced into poverty,
We are...
Your vengance will be your dark destiny
Killing white boys - Long live the race!!!
Killing white boys - Like Pancho Villa!!!
Killing white boys - Satan takes care of you
Killing white boys - Killing white boys!!!
Machete in hand and hot native blood
Satanic force, looking for vengance
In the north we will take over
Killing white boys - Long live the race!!!
Killing white boys - Like Ricky Ramirez!!!
Killing white boys - Satan takes care of you
Killing white boys - Killing white boys!!!

My friend Ramon used to say "The South WILL rise again - these dumb fuckers just don't understand how far south."

Doug Sahm's various projects are good for this type of thing, especially Sir Douglas Quintet and the Texas Tornadoes. I can't get enough of "Is Anybody Goin' to San Antone?"

Duh.

Obviously the Mexican Hat Dance should be on repeat for the entire evening.

At least put on Beck's "Burro" - mariachi version of "Jackass"

Until this moment, I thought I was all alone in the world.

San Diego burrito joint jukebox picks:

Vicente Fernandez
Lupillo Rivera
Chalino Sanchez
Los Tigres del Norte
Los Tucanes del Tijuana

tylero (tylero), Thursday, 10 February 2005 17:13 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah, Los Tucanes had a great album last year and the year before, every year really

also: Julieta Venegas (Bueninvento is better than Si but the new song/video is DOPE), Celso Pina ("the rebel of the accordion," his new album is all about Che Guevara), Maldita Vecinidad.

For dancing: INSPECTOR, especially last years' Unidad, Cerveza, y Ska. "Ska Voovie Boobie Baby" was in my top 10 this last year; video (miniaturized band perving on hot supermodel in whose house they live, kind of like The Littles) is super-caliente!

And no thread can be complete without me bigging up my fave alternative chica: Natalia LaFourcade, who is kind of like what would happen if all awesome girl-pop music (Avril, Bjork, Nellie) were concentrated and sweetened and poured into a Mexican young woman.

I used to think Bueninvento was better, too, but Si has really been growing on me lately. And yeah, Natalia LaFourcade is fantastic, even if I'd rather stick flaming chopsticks in my ears than have to listen to one bar of Avril Lavigne or Nellie McKay.

aw phil, "he who fucks nuns," etc.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 10 February 2005 17:40 (nineteen years ago) link

It isn't real mexican music unless you got it on cdr with an ink jet quality cover at a saturday afternoon flea market on the southeast side for 4 bucks after bargaining from a guy who doesn't speak english.

Tylers picks are OTM. He totally stole my barbacoa-and-tortillas joint picks from me. ;)
