Apple TV update! Adding airplay to this thing might alleviate (not eliminate) the main problem I have with that futching interface.

My fave - Get Find My iPhone without having to sign up for MobileMe. Could have used it a week ago when my iPhone was stolen...

schwantz, Monday, 22 November 2010 21:15 (thirteen years ago) link

6hrs to download the update, i think I'll wait

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Monday, 22 November 2010 21:28 (thirteen years ago) link

damn, are you on dialup? took me a few minutes

Unfrozen Caveman Board-Lawyer (WmC), Monday, 22 November 2010 21:28 (thirteen years ago) link

It's all gone slow but someone pointed me in the direction of these handy direct links:

http://shadez.tumblr.com/post/1649909087/ios421epoch

Must be different servers, because the download estimate is now 2hrs instead of 7.

After download, you put the file in "~/Library/iTunes/iPad Software Updates" folder (or iPhone Software Updates if its for iPhone) and connect your device and it should update.

How do u search for text on a safari page? Btw is it me or does the keypad look a bit different?

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Monday, 22 November 2010 21:45 (thirteen years ago) link

My download took 5 minutes for the first 440meg but the last 100Mb or so has been downloading for over an hour.

treefell, Monday, 22 November 2010 21:48 (thirteen years ago) link

How do u search for text on a safari page?

was wondering this myself.

Unfrozen Caveman Board-Lawyer (WmC), Monday, 22 November 2010 22:11 (thirteen years ago) link

Do like a google search, look at the bottom of the suggested searches. Boom.

shaane, Monday, 22 November 2010 22:12 (thirteen years ago) link

that's kinda weak

con suelo, Monday, 22 November 2010 22:19 (thirteen years ago) link

Counterintuitive but w/e. Might have helped to call the box 'search' rather than google

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Monday, 22 November 2010 22:23 (thirteen years ago) link

Early days but I thunk this update has fixed iPad Safari's infuriating habit of reloading web pages you've got in the background when you return to them.

Alba, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 00:23 (thirteen years ago) link

Thunk = think.

Shame it's still a pisser to type on. I actually think it's because - in landscape mode at least - the keys are too big, or too far apart.

Alba, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 00:24 (thirteen years ago) link

Great to be able to play Spotify and Fstream in the background at last.

Alba, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 00:26 (thirteen years ago) link

Ha, WTF? I knew Apple was changing the switch to be a mute switch instead of orientation lock, but it doesn't actually mute anything! It just shows a mute symbol on the screen but all sound continues as usual. Thought it maybe didn't work on third party apps but just tried it on the iPod app and still ... nothing. Bizarre.

Alba, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 00:34 (thirteen years ago) link

still cross about that.

stet, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 00:41 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, but does your mute button actually mute?

Alba, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 00:44 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm not actually that bothered about orientation being a software switch, as I always found the physical switch quite fiddly to find with my cl,sy fingers and stupid brain. But I do object to the switch now doing nothing at all.

Alba, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 00:46 (thirteen years ago) link

can't tell you -- still not upgrading till they cave. Or I do.

stet, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 00:47 (thirteen years ago) link

Come on in, the water's mostly fine. Not noticed sluggishness as a result of multitasking yet.

Slightly annoyingly, app switching to my Twitter client of choice, Osfoora, still seems to suffer from the same two-second lag before displaying my timeline that it has when launching it from scratch. Maybe it just needs a 4.2 update.

Alba, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 00:53 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm sold on the new Twitter client now they've fixed some of the dafter UI stuff. I like the layers a lot.

stet, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 00:59 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, it's pretty good, especially with the notifications it now has. But it's missing a few things. When I view someone's profile, I like that Osfoora tells me whether they are following me or not. And, being ego-crazed, I like having access to "My tweets, retweeted".

Alba, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 01:10 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, odd it doesn't have the followback status -- the iPhone one does. It has yr tweets retweeted too, but doesn't tell you who by!

stet, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 01:12 (thirteen years ago) link

I can't find yr tweets retweeted. Where have they hidden it?

Alba, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 01:15 (thirteen years ago) link

Profile > retweets > my tweets, rtd.. (iPhone only, like the follow back status)

stet, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 01:47 (thirteen years ago) link

Ah, yeah, iPhone only.

Alba, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 01:59 (thirteen years ago) link

As someone who primarily uses the iPad for displaying reference images for painting, I am pretty pissed about the loss of the orientation lock. That is all.

jeff, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 06:51 (thirteen years ago) link

Really nice to have quick access to brightness on that panel where the orientation lock is.

Alba, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 09:03 (thirteen years ago) link

Wow, a hell of a lot less chequerboarding when I scroll through long web pages. I'm really surprised how much better this update makes the iPad.

Alba, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 09:25 (thirteen years ago) link

jeff, it's not lost, just changed to a software thing instead of a hardware one.

That said, it's still a loss in a way. IMO the reason the switch makes sense on the iPhone is because switching whether the ringer/speaker is on is one of the top phone functions. Really, this just makes me think that having audio alerts on the iPad is going to be more common, which I don't really need.

mh, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 18:51 (thirteen years ago) link

that's true, it is not lost. but now it's an annoying minor process, especially when i am constantly doing it because i have to rotate the ipad a lot based on what i am working on. will probably add a minute or two of tedium to my day. i will take this one for the team so that each person who is constantly muting and unmuting their ipad will be able to save 5 seconds each day.

jeff, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 19:27 (thirteen years ago) link

This really is one of Apple's dumber decisions. I know Jobs is pathologically scared of buttons but the orientation lock was put there for a reason. Oh btw from December the accelerator on all Mazda cars will suddenly become the radio on/off button. Ridiculous. I don't have an iPad btw.

makes literally nil sense

yo aa which linux tablet u recommend

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 20:56 (thirteen years ago) link

But Apple has been partial to some pretty awful design decisions lately (iPod Nano Touch, new iPod Shuffle, Game Centre fit-out).

Friday: vuvuzela club meeting (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 20:56 (thirteen years ago) link

xp I suspect that is a zing but couldn't and wouldn't advise buying a Linux tablet regardless.

i blame steve jobs for these awful design decisions

The dumber ones (except iPad switch) do seem to have happened around the time jobso was sick.

I actually find the orientation lock a pain in the ass to use when the iPad is in a case (both figuring out where it is + fitting my finger between the edges of the case) so double-clicking the home button is preferable. Also brightness control there is great too.

My guess is they'll get rid of the physical button altogether in the next revision, since a mute switch on the ipad is pretty much useless, considering you can just hold down the volume button for a sec.

Charlesburg, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 21:33 (thirteen years ago) link

alright some freelance ass ilxor pitch a story abt jeff painting from an ipad, lets all scratch each others backs

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 21:35 (thirteen years ago) link

prob with doing the hardware lock button in software is the damn thing moves. So if you're in the wrong orientation you need to chase it around. Compared to the hardware one, where you can move the iPad and lock/relock as you go.
