I'm off to that AM01 show. I also saw the 1st in that series at the Spitz, London. I'll report back any balearic craziness.

Speaking of "Balearic," anyone have the tracklist for Simonetti's "Balearic Sabbath" comp? There is just one song I don't recognize (the one right after Stevie Wonder)

Also, classic for including the best, weirdest Sylvester song ever

9. Fran-Key - Tetrapod Lover (Takimis Lost Ipod Mix) (Crue-l)

Hmmm...maybe it's before Stevie. I don't know, It's not Wings, Fleetwood Mac, Stevie, Sylvester, or Sabbath - what else is there? It's a longer tune...the lyrics sound like 'hold on...bella' but that ain't it...

that is "Onda" by Cassiona

it's a Brazilian track, I only know it cuz I have it on a different mix with titles (Brazilian Beat Brooklyn Vol. 1 or something like that)

dmr, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 17:03 (sixteen years ago) link

I think it was on Baile Funk 1 (which is like chill 70s music, not the current type of baile)

Ah! Thank you!!

I've interviewed Sorcerer & Hatchback for the Amoeba Music blog - check it out here.

BATTAGS, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 02:01 (sixteen years ago) link

i picked up the Hatchback 12" this weekend and it skips twice. there's no gunk or scratches. maybe it was pressed offcenter? i need to return it. bummed.

jaxon, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 03:22 (sixteen years ago) link

how was it when they came into the store? what kinda stuff did they play?

jaxon, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 03:23 (sixteen years ago) link

it was great! a little crowd of friends and heads came out to see 'em, and they played a mixture of soon to be released and unreleased original stuff, ultra-deep-digging cosmic/kraut stuff (Space Art was a notable one) and some newer cosmic/balearic stuff like the Aeroplane 12" on Eskimo. Sucks about the the Hatchback 12", we've got a few left, i'll make sure there's one for you to exchange when you come in. ask for me.

Tropical Hotdog is a great name.

it didn't occur to me until I saw their blog that it's a captain beefheart reference

tropical hotdog night, like two flamingoes in a fruit fight!

Here's a mix i did recently, live at an 'ambient/chill' festival in the middle of the woods in Mendocino County, CA. the tracklist:

allez allez - african queen (quiet village remix)
fern kinney - baby let me kiss you
pointer sisters - mercury rising (dub version)
mudd - c40
six cups of rebel - kontroll (the organ grinders breakdown)
key of dreams - africa (dub mix) (klubb kebabb edit)
champ's boys orchestra - tubular bells (cosmic mix)
the knife - marble house (the emperor machine remix)
venus gang - love to fly (cloud edit)
ashford & simpson - solid (dub version)
sorcerer - egyptian sunset
vangelis - let it happen (beatfanatic's balearic boogie mix)
paul simon - diamonds dub (tangoterje edit)
ashra - shuttlecock (cloud edit)
amp fiddler - faith (jazzanova remix)
peter visti - dolly

hope you like it, you can download right HERE

(you'll probably need to right-click that and 'save as', PC users)

i was in the store on a sunday about a month ago on a sunday evening and there was some dude spinning one of the craziest ambient/chill sets i've ever heard.

i specifically remember he went from "our prayer" into some sort of pbs-type monologue about prayer into some sort of indian sitar/chant type stuff. also lots of alice coltrane-styled raga jazz and lots of cluster-sounding ambient krautrock

any idea who that was??!?

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 4 October 2007 18:20 (sixteen years ago) link

also your set there is A+++++++++++++++++++++++++

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 4 October 2007 18:20 (sixteen years ago) link

hmm. i'm not sure who that might have been. we did have a 'summer of love' DJ series on Sunday afternoons throughout July & August, so it was probably part of that. If i had to guess i'd say it was Brother Dylan or Brother Robbie, two kids (i mean that literally, they're both like 21) who do a monthly 60's club night at the Casanova Lounge called The Mutual Appreciation Society. They do a Kosmische night every few months, the most recent one was this past Sunday...if i had to guess i'd say it was them but frankly i never thought either of them had it in 'em.

and thanks, looks like i made the grade!

BATTAGS, Thursday, 4 October 2007 18:52 (sixteen years ago) link

damn, i just left mendocino a few weeks ago. i would have been there ;_;

sounds good, too!

oh its the vangelis! nice

deej, Thursday, 4 October 2007 21:12 (sixteen years ago) link

i dunno lucas, it sold out two months in advance, by lottery only, and *everyone* buys a ticket, including all the organizers and DJ's. they would have turned you away at the gate. 350 people max. more info.

thanks deej!

Nice mix, BATTAGS!

Capitaine Jay Vee, Thursday, 4 October 2007 23:59 (sixteen years ago) link

i know man! i lived in willits for a year or so before moving to victoria BC in september, so chillits is definitely a friend-of-a-friend deal

anything you recommend out of the other sets?

lucas pine, Friday, 5 October 2007 03:27 (sixteen years ago) link

oh yeah, you know the deal.

DF Tram - killer 4am ambient set, tons of weird samples & textures. great stuff. Tal M. Klein is funky downtempo with live guitar/bass/keys + laptop beats. Megan Hug is shoegazer with some electronics thrown in for good measure. Timmii is an interesting journey through a whole bunch of different stuff that manages to sound coherent when listened as a whole.

i'm still making my way through them myself so i'll post links to any other notable ones. those are the ones i remember from the party.

i would *highly* recommend going to the wikipedia page on chillits and checking out the 2003 recordings - Jonah Sharp and Mixmaster Morris absolutely KILLED IT (as much as you can at an ambient party i suppose). Morris' set has been a regular staple in my listening diet ever since, shit is legendary.

BATTAGS, Friday, 5 October 2007 18:21 (sixteen years ago) link

hey dude im listening to yr mix right now, its great!

BATTAGS, Friday, 5 October 2007 19:10 (sixteen years ago) link

you can find that key of dreams edit on this release.
funnily enough i found the original 12" yesterday, with full vocals and everything. i think i'm gonna try dropping that instead.

BATTAGS, Friday, 5 October 2007 19:12 (sixteen years ago) link

hey Vahid, is that your name i keep seeing on flyers around town (and like SF Weekly 'best DJ 2007' or some shit like that?)?

BATTAGS, Friday, 5 October 2007 19:14 (sixteen years ago) link

DJs don't develop a cult following in this town very easily - it takes a lot of skill, an ear for mixing, and positive energy to keep the gyrating hordes a-flutter. DJ Vahid is the real deal for our readers, and now that he's landed a gravy gig at 1015 Folsom, adoring dance junkies can hear a lot more of him.

haha no

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 5 October 2007 19:38 (sixteen years ago) link

the real question is if you keep the gyrating hordes a-flutter

max, Friday, 5 October 2007 19:41 (sixteen years ago) link

vangelis is totally the best, i copped a copy of the 12" off discogs w/in minutes of hearing it

deej, Friday, 5 October 2007 19:42 (sixteen years ago) link

:) ok just checking!

deej, was it expensive? we've still got it in stock at amoeba...

BATTAGS, Friday, 5 October 2007 22:07 (sixteen years ago) link

that track is a great segway from chill to dance.
