what a disaster for apple

(somebody had to)

I actually find the orientation lock a pain in the ass to use when the iPad is in a case (both figuring out where it is + fitting my finger between the edges of the case) so double-clicking the home button is preferable. Also brightness control there is great too.

My guess is they'll get rid of the physical button altogether in the next revision, since a mute switch on the ipad is pretty much useless, considering you can just hold down the volume button for a sec.

Charlesburg, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 21:33 (thirteen years ago) link

alright some freelance ass ilxor pitch a story abt jeff painting from an ipad, lets all scratch each others backs

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 21:35 (thirteen years ago) link

prob with doing the hardware lock button in software is the damn thing moves. So if you're in the wrong orientation you need to chase it around. Compared to the hardware one, where you can move the iPad and lock/relock as you go.

stet, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 21:40 (thirteen years ago) link

You know what would solve this problem? BUTTONS.

Friday: vuvuzela club meeting (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 21:42 (thirteen years ago) link

xp yeah, but in the dark seeing the "button" on the screen is much easier than fishing around the edge of the case. I actually haven't installed 4.2 yet, so maybe it's not as good as I think.

Charlesburg, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 21:44 (thirteen years ago) link

dunno bout that: you can even find the real button with yr eyes shut

stet, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 21:53 (thirteen years ago) link

They should let you do some special figure of 8 touch gesture or something to lock it.

Alba, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 22:09 (thirteen years ago) link

or just let the switch fulfil its destiny

stet, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 22:12 (thirteen years ago) link

Or just wedge YET ANOTHER function into the home button, like treble-click-pause-double-click-chuck-a-handstand to go landscape and treble-click-pause-double-click-lick-your-elbow to go back to portrait.

Friday: vuvuzela club meeting (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 22:12 (thirteen years ago) link

I think maybe I went off that switch after getting an iPad case. It never seemed as easy to find after that.

Alba, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 22:13 (thirteen years ago) link

Actually even quadruple-clicking of the home button would be quite OK.

Alba, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 22:13 (thirteen years ago) link

They should let you operate the whole thing in morse code clicks of the home button.

minimal hardware buttons is central to the whole concept of the iphone/pad/touch format thats currently roiling the entire tech world

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 22:16 (thirteen years ago) link

I preferred the iPod when it had a mechanical scroll wheel.

Alba, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 22:18 (thirteen years ago) link

definitely. never ever got the hang of really fast scrolling with the touchwheel models

stet, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 22:19 (thirteen years ago) link

stet, re: switch, there's a big difference with vs. without the case. But I see your point.

Also, iPad with case >>>> iPad without case (and I usually hate any sort of case, eg on phones), but that's a diff discussion.

Charlesburg, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 22:26 (thirteen years ago) link

god apple is so bad at product design

Yes but I think jobso is taking it too far. He has a NO BUTTONS hammer and everything looks to him like a nail.

jeff, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 22:54 (thirteen years ago) link

I know it would upset the no-buttons freaks, but DAMN a d-pad and a couple of buttons would be great for gaming.

schwantz, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 23:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Took me at least nine months to work out what an iPod was for. The whole concept of a CD walkman without CDs was so foreign that I had no frame of reference. That and the name 'iPod' doesn't exactly explain its function. I thought maybe it was a multipurpose PDA or something.

Friday: vuvuzela club meeting (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 23:18 (thirteen years ago) link

nine long months staring at that thing in your hand, brow furrowed

UH

Friday: vuvuzela club meeting (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 23:53 (thirteen years ago) link

the main problem I have with no buttons is I have to take the thing out of my pocket to skip a song. I liked not having to do that with an ipod, made the chance of getting mugged less likely.

akm, Wednesday, 24 November 2010 00:16 (thirteen years ago) link

otm. That's one of the key reasons I still tote an iPod Classic everywhere.

Friday: vuvuzela club meeting (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 24 November 2010 00:19 (thirteen years ago) link

iPod Shuffles are great for in-pocket operation.

Alba, Wednesday, 24 November 2010 00:23 (thirteen years ago) link

controls on the headphones fix this too

You can't unclip it without mashing the keys and skipping/pausing a track, so I don't know how people are using these new ones.

Friday: vuvuzela club meeting (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 24 November 2010 00:33 (thirteen years ago) link

Well, you can lock it if you want by holding in the button but I tend just to put it in my jacket pocket unclipped.

had my first major irritation with apple tv, which was also my first experience renting a film from itunes (I should have learned not to try to do this on thanksgiving day when I desperately needed to keep my 4 year old occupied); downloading movies on my crappy connection takes like, the length of the movie; 1.5 hrs to download a 70 minute movie, for instance. Once it's downloaded, since apple tv has no real storage, you'd better watch it right then or NOT navigate away from it in appletv, or you will ahve to download the whole thing again. Granted this is probably better if you don't have a horrible DSL connection like I do (3mbps, although realistically it's more like 2 according to speedtest).

So, shouldn't I be able to rent films on the computer instead, and stream them to the appletv? It seems like I should, and yet, I can't find any of my films that are imported into itunes from appletv; the few short videos I can find I can't seem to play because "an error occurred". This might be because I haven't updated itunes beyond 10 yet (10.1 came out this week); does this fix that? then at least I could rent something earlier, have it stored on the machine for a few hours, and then when we watch it juts navigate to it and not have to wait another 2 hours for it to rebuffer.

akm, Friday, 26 November 2010 14:49 (thirteen years ago) link

netflix and torrenting work pretty well

╭∩╮⎝⏠⏝⏠⎠╭∩╮ (jeff), Friday, 26 November 2010 18:52 (thirteen years ago) link

true; I'm just surprised apple hasn't trumped netflix for movie streaming; i would have thought it would have started playing more instantly and downloaded while it played. (that said the hd quality off itunes was better than anything I stream off netflix which looks shitty due to my bandwidth problem)

akm, Friday, 26 November 2010 19:31 (thirteen years ago) link

This might be because I haven't updated itunes beyond 10 yet (10.1 came out this week); does this fix that?

According to this it doesn't matter, so I'm not going to do the annoying IT support thing of asking you to update to the latest version.

The way I would have done it is to rent a film, use the Apple TV to find it in your iTunes Library > Films and just start watching it (I've not rented a film yet), but if that's not working perhaps you can't do it after all. I agree that that's bloody ridiculous, though.

I reckon 2Mbps is pushing it for live HD streaming at Apple's demanded quality, but I agree that your Mac should have a way of taking care of that so you don't notice it.

can't decide between MBA 11.6 and MBP 13"; if only the 13" had an i3 it'd be a no-brainer. why are they still rocking the 30 year old C2D

mo loko (cozen), Friday, 26 November 2010 20:27 (thirteen years ago) link

i3 is too hot for the 13" shell. The MBA is a good second computer due to one USB, no SD card slot &c.

blanketly offensive posts (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 26 November 2010 20:57 (thirteen years ago) link

basically: already got a MB but only use for internet/youtube/email/itunes - want to upgrade to either be able to also maybe play games under boot camp (MBP) or just continue to do what I currently do but lighter/smaller (for new job which will include travel)

snagging points: C2D is old but RAM in MBA is unupgradeable and 11.6 is maybe /too/ small

mo loko (cozen), Friday, 26 November 2010 21:10 (thirteen years ago) link

Tyranny of choice. MBP at least has more than one USB slot so you can use wi-fi/3G as well as a memory thing. MBA is zone of suck imo especially at the current price, but the 13" MBP costs more again so I dunno.

blanketly offensive posts (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 26 November 2010 21:49 (thirteen years ago) link

fwiw I bought the current 15" MBP and love it to bits, but I don't know how I'd go with travel.
