That kind of dated rumour is that kind I tend to have little faith in.

I mean, when there are pics from a Chinese factory or what have you, fine, the rumour's got legs, but leaks about what Apple will release in 5 months time ... how often does that happen?

Alba, Saturday, 27 November 2010 00:46 (thirteen years ago) link

I'd go for the MBA, or wait for an update - C2D is seriously outdated tech, also even a MBP 13" would suck to carry around. I dualboot on my MBP 15" but almost never play games nowadays so

dayo, Saturday, 27 November 2010 00:47 (thirteen years ago) link

spose i could look this up: but could a 11" MBA drive something like LR3 pretty easily (and with an external monitor)? i don't game much, and basically the only thing i need horsepower for is photo editings/management

BIG MUFFIN (gbx), Saturday, 27 November 2010 00:49 (thirteen years ago) link

I think all the perceptions of 'fastness' from the MBA just come from having the SSD in there

LR3 is faster than aperture but I'm not sure how objectively fast it is, the problem is that you'll probably have to store all your photos on an external disk-based HD, which means that when you are editing, you still have to wait for the files to be written from/to the HD etc. which might impact the performance

unless you're gangsta and keep all the files you're editing on the SSD itself

Jefferson Mansplain (DG), Saturday, 27 November 2010 00:56 (thirteen years ago) link

dayo, Saturday, 27 November 2010 00:57 (thirteen years ago) link

Slightly better now that it does airplay. I think I'll take on caek's suggestion because I'm sick of it not playing stuff.

leo tldrstoy (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 10 December 2010 22:43 (thirteen years ago) link

so i got a tv/monitor and im plugging in an inherited mac mini from i think 2006 to serve as a entertainment console thing... is boxee the way to go on this?

max, Friday, 10 December 2010 22:45 (thirteen years ago) link

my previous media center attempt for my dad was that exact set up w/a 3rd party remote, it was too buggy and weird for him but tbf hes old and not best at computers also it was the prev vers of boxee - its workable 4 sure but i wasnt crazy abt boxee

ice cr?m, Friday, 10 December 2010 22:48 (thirteen years ago) link

what are the other options

btw i was spelling it boxxy at first and just getting that 4chan chick, the internet, lol

max, Friday, 10 December 2010 22:48 (thirteen years ago) link

"plex"?

max, Friday, 10 December 2010 22:50 (thirteen years ago) link

theres one called plex but that was worse than boxee imo - you could just not use any media center type software and just play moves thro vlc or whatevs

ice cr?m, Friday, 10 December 2010 22:50 (thirteen years ago) link

ha xp

ice cr?m, Friday, 10 December 2010 22:50 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah Plex. Appaz the current version is shithouse though.

leo tldrstoy (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 10 December 2010 22:51 (thirteen years ago) link

eh i guess http://grab.by/7Q57 is prob the way to go and the new vers is prob better

ice cr?m, Friday, 10 December 2010 22:52 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i mean its not a huge pain to play vids thru vlc

max, Friday, 10 December 2010 22:54 (thirteen years ago) link

WD TV Live is the best way to go for playing vids, it's a billion times cheaper than a Mac Mini and plays anything you chuck at it. Needs a wireless adapter though, if you want to go wireless.

leo tldrstoy (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 10 December 2010 22:55 (thirteen years ago) link

well i already have the mac mini so

max, Friday, 10 December 2010 22:55 (thirteen years ago) link

fuck sorry

leo tldrstoy (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 10 December 2010 22:56 (thirteen years ago) link

hey here's an idea, why don't i read before posting

leo tldrstoy (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 10 December 2010 22:56 (thirteen years ago) link

now that im thinking it thru im not even sure why i WANTED boxee or plex vs just using dam vlc or something... i feel like apple is giving me a hideous iOS disease where i want everything neatly arranged in libraries and what have u

max, Friday, 10 December 2010 22:56 (thirteen years ago) link

Plex is designed for a TV screen, VLC not so much (unless I'm missing a plug-in)

leo tldrstoy (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 10 December 2010 22:57 (thirteen years ago) link

cool thing w/using boxxee type shit is you can control totally via remote/ditch the keyboard

ice cr?m, Friday, 10 December 2010 22:57 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah that's my thinking. If you want to use it properly through a telly you really want to be able to use it without a kb & mouse affair.

leo tldrstoy (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 10 December 2010 23:00 (thirteen years ago) link

ya i wouldnt use vlc on my tv tbh!!

manic pixie dream police (s1ocki), Friday, 10 December 2010 23:04 (thirteen years ago) link

my friend colin has a really nicely-laid out program he uses, with a remote app on his iphone. shall i ask him what it is?

manic pixie dream police (s1ocki), Friday, 10 December 2010 23:04 (thirteen years ago) link

YES

leo tldrstoy (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 10 December 2010 23:06 (thirteen years ago) link

yr 'friend colin' 'from canada'

ice cr?m, Friday, 10 December 2010 23:07 (thirteen years ago) link

wait tell me more about this vlc vs plex "designed for tv screen" stuff

remote-ness isnt a huge issue since i have that logitech mouse/kyb program on my iphone

max, Friday, 10 December 2010 23:09 (thirteen years ago) link

but point taken... the problem is all these programs seem 2 suck

max, Friday, 10 December 2010 23:10 (thirteen years ago) link

so basically navigating vlc with a remote control is too much effort iirc

leo tldrstoy (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 10 December 2010 23:14 (thirteen years ago) link

and also impossible
