one day if i ever have an income i will buy one of those old harmony archtop jazz boxes with those big murky metal-covered p-13s. + if there are any magical wish-granting cosmic deity types listening i would like to instantly play like tal farlow upon purchasing, ok thx

always wanted a lucite Ampeg Dan Armstrong (a la Keef ca. Let It Bleed/Altamont or Greg Ginn)

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 30 November 2010 02:56 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm not a gear fetishist. I only have a Martin acoustic right now, but I guess I could use an electric at some point. I'd probably pick up a Jazzmaster and a Vox AC30, and some pedals.

John Lennon, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 10:56 (thirteen years ago) link

my guitar lust just disappeared a couple of years ago, not sure why. i'd still grab a telesonic if one turned up cheap though.

wouldn't get another rick or any vox these days

tullamore dew hart (electricsound), Tuesday, 30 November 2010 11:04 (thirteen years ago) link

Huh? Why not Vox? Is it because they're made in Korea now? I'd probably go with a vintage British model of some type.

John Lennon, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 17:02 (thirteen years ago) link

i wouldn't get a new one full stop, i just think if i was looking for another guitar it would be more full-bodied in sound

The Korg UK-built AC30s from the mid-90s are still pretty undervalued

looking for a japanese cheapo for xmas, preferably audition, i have a jedson, sekova and two audition guitars already, great tone off the bat

jumpskins, Thursday, 2 December 2010 03:06 (thirteen years ago) link

yeahhh, is there much info out there as to how specifically companies like audition, kay, teiscio, and so on were related? or am i only thinking that they were cuz dearmond was just licencing out his wares to anybody and whoever? or somethin? always wanted a more concise and detailed history on all the weird and cheap offbrand stuff but there probably wouldn't be, huh.

arby's, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 02:02 (thirteen years ago) link

(i so closely associate dearmond with cla$$y gretsch guitars, and duane eddy, sometimes i forget about the cheapie guitars...oh and the whole weird ry cooder thing...i don't think i get that guy. should i get that guy?)

arby's, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 02:05 (thirteen years ago) link

I can (at least somewhat) lead you through the zone on thus stuff - dearmond pre-fender ownership was pretty much just a pickup manufacturer. I would get more detailed here but I am stuck ilxing on iPhone so I am already getting frustrated. Ask away tho, I am glad to type on this thing as long as I don't also have to come up w/ the questions.

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 02:47 (thirteen years ago) link

I currently drawing a total blank on audition tho??? Is that an old school thing or more recent?

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 02:49 (thirteen years ago) link

audition were japanese manufactured, mid-late 60s, and from what i've seen of 'em just look a lot like a lot of the other wonky cheap guitars from the time that would look at home in hound dog taylor's hands. i'm a total blank slate on that stuff though so idk if that's totally broad. i mean i don't even know what questions to ask tbh.

arby's, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 03:01 (thirteen years ago) link

ok so this is sort of leading me out of the fog, at least somewhat, in terms of brandname webbing and why i felt like i was seeing similar models with different brand names, and yah the whole dearmond/rowe industries thing was kind of a slap to own face once i actually, like, thought about it. still sort of confused as to specifics i guess. like for example, what harmony, idk, as an entity were and did exactly. they manufactured stuff for fender? weird?

see idk what questions to ask even, like i'm aware of all these bazillions of brands, but only as isolated points in a void...who the hell were eko...whats up with...see i'm not even gonna get started. my knowledge retention is a tenuous thing anyway and i'm currently plodding through development of the guitar e.g. weird reniasance vihuela de mano and four course etc blah, it's sort of weird thinking about modern guitars tbh.

What on earth is that thing? It's...beautiful. I want one.

Pashmina, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 18:24 (thirteen years ago) link

Looks like something that would be stashed in the 60's TV series Batcave. Also it's got a separate single coil pickup for each string, mounted at 90 degrees!

Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 18:37 (thirteen years ago) link

man both editions of those guitar stories books are very expensive!! and exactly the sort of thing i'm looking for :(

that bass was built by CCDB of Os Mutantes!

and i want it, really really badly.

arby's, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 23:13 (thirteen years ago) link

and seperate on/on switches for each pickup? but only two knobs? i can't tell what's going on with that lower plate.

arby's, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 23:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Google Translate really mangles Portuguese.
From the picture, it looks like:

  • Just below the strings - four slide switches and two knobs. All of the switches seem to be up, so impossible to tell if they're plain on/off or on/off/on allowing for phase reverse. Assuming that the two knobs are vol and tone?
  • On the triangular control plate - two Fender Jaguar style thumbwheels? Vol and tone again? Also seems to be a 1/4" jack socket.
  • Above the strings - another slide switch, maybe some kind of JM/Jag style rhythm/solo dual circuit?
Maybe there's something under Erasmo's hand as well.

Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 23:45 (thirteen years ago) link

Actually the four switches can be two way and still allow phase reverse.

While I don't usually care very much for burst finishes or flame tops, the light blue binding really makes this for me. But in this case, I can sorta imagine a blonde bikini girl slowly drifting across the top on an inflatable raft.

after playing my brother's Fender-scale guitar, I think I want one; it just felt easier to play than my Gibson (nb: I fucking love my Gibson, step off)

GAS begins...

Paul McCartney, the Gary Barlow of The Beatles (snoball), Monday, 26 November 2012 18:51 (eleven years ago) link

What gauge strings on that Fender? Longer scale length is generally considered "harder," all things being equal. I mean, GAS needs no excuse or apology but if what you're looking for is "easier" then a decent pro setup and/or lighter strings will change things up on your current guitar in a hurry.

sug life (rogermexico.), Monday, 26 November 2012 18:57 (eleven years ago) link

lol like I have any clue what gauge strings are on my own guitar, let alone anyone else's

I loves you, PORGI (DJP), Monday, 26 November 2012 19:16 (eleven years ago) link

I find that having a longer-scale length is more comfortable, actually.

how's life, Monday, 26 November 2012 19:25 (eleven years ago) link

Like, I feel like I have a little more room to make chords on a longer neck. My fingers would get a little crowded on my old LP.

how's life, Monday, 26 November 2012 19:29 (eleven years ago) link

Totally not arguing that point an it's why I kept "harder" and "easier" in quotes. One player's "stiff" is another's "precise," etc etc

sug life (rogermexico.), Monday, 26 November 2012 20:20 (eleven years ago) link

it seemed easier to make barre chords on his guitar, for one thing

I loves you, PORGI (DJP), Monday, 26 November 2012 20:21 (eleven years ago) link

That could be down to fretboard width and radius, as well as scale length.

Paul McCartney, the Gary Barlow of The Beatles (snoball), Monday, 26 November 2012 20:28 (eleven years ago) link

Or action at the nut (har har), which any qualified tech can def improve for you.

Impossible to Web-MD this without knowing exactly which model you played.

sug life (rogermexico.), Monday, 26 November 2012 20:35 (eleven years ago) link

well, mine is Gibson Epiphone limited edition Riviera Custom P93

his is an Antigua Fender Telecaster

I loves you, PORGI (DJP), Monday, 26 November 2012 20:39 (eleven years ago) link

the Tele:
fretboard radius - 7.25"
scale length - 25.5"
nut width - 1.650"
U shape neck
not specified, but Teles usually ship with 9 gauge strings?

the Epi:
fretboard radius - 12"
scale length - 24.75"
nut width - 1.68"
C shape neck
shipped with 10 gauge strings

Paul McCartney, the Gary Barlow of The Beatles (snoball), Monday, 26 November 2012 20:57 (eleven years ago) link

The smaller fret radius, slightly narrow neck, and it's U shaped back go a way to explaining why barre chords are a little bit easier on the Tele.

Paul McCartney, the Gary Barlow of The Beatles (snoball), Monday, 26 November 2012 20:58 (eleven years ago) link

i know what it means but the acronym GAS is the weirdest thing to catch on in internet guitar communities. and the capitalization. all these old men shouting that they don't just have gas they have GAS.

my guess is the combination of radius and nut width. 1/16" in width doesn't sound like much but it makes a big difference in feel.

arby's, Monday, 26 November 2012 21:05 (eleven years ago) link

er i guess more like 1/32" difference in this case but anyway

arby's, Monday, 26 November 2012 21:05 (eleven years ago) link

ok i'll bite, what is GAS

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 26 November 2012 21:11 (eleven years ago) link

Gear Acquisition Syndrome

Paul McCartney, the Gary Barlow of The Beatles (snoball), Monday, 26 November 2012 21:13 (eleven years ago) link

the tendency to focus on buying guitar equipment over actually playing guitar. i hate the term too though.

how's life, Monday, 26 November 2012 21:15 (eleven years ago) link

Excessive GAS takes time away from playing the guitar (synth/drums/camera/etc.), but very mild GAS can help someone to focus in on what they want out of their instrument.

My only electric axe for a while has been a cheapo Johnson solara -- I actually like the way it plays and the tone, but I'm looking to upgrade to something similar but more gigworthy. I was looking at the Guild Bluesbird, which I'm seeing (the more recent ones, not the 70s models) in the $700-1000 range. I'm also seeing DeArmond bluesbird models closer to $500. Is it worth spending more for the Guild? The DeArmond I was looking at happens to have a cool-ass D tailpiece that's a little more distinctive than the guild, fwiw.
