so, biggest upset of all time in the NFL?

nah. Jets in Super Bowl 3 still owns that one.

but I think this has to be a close second.

The Patriots over the Rams in 2001 lingering not too far behind.

the worst thing about this Super Bowl is the endless debate that begins tonight between Dolphins and Patriot fans, as to whether the Patriots getting to 18-0 before losing trumps what Miami did since they technically won more games in a row.

Despite being a Dolphins fan, I won't partake.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:39 (sixteen years ago) link

oh and man was Tom Petty's halftime show sleep-inducing.

Especially when compared with Prince's last year.

Tom's a guy I can take or leave, but not the type of guy I want to see headline a Super Bowl halftime show. Not NOW.

daerest football gods: heart still racing, please stop. I think I am developing a beer allergy. Two beers + close game.. ugh

daria-g, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:46 (sixteen years ago) link

well, you're in uncharted territory. i have to imagine it feels harder to be unbeaten and lose in the end to be 15-1, 14-2, 13-3, all of which have been done before.

so again my condolences...your heart rate will come down soon. I still woulda killed for the season they had, my team barely scraped out one win, which I didn't even get to see.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:48 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm cool I think I better stick to wine though? I think I was slightly more stressed when Denver was up 10-0 on my Redskins when I was about 10 years old, but only a little :)

daria-g, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:50 (sixteen years ago) link

just be glad you haven't broken anything.

I haven't ever broken anything serious, but there are other football fans I know that have destroyed televisions after games.

Nobody gave the Broncs a chance against the Packers (except me :))

Can't remember exactly what the spread was, but it was double digits.

Stormy Davis, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:55 (sixteen years ago) link

That was the best Super Bowl I've ever seen. Four lead changes. Brady sacked five times (I've been saying it all year: The way to beat Tom Brady is to blitz like crazy!). The Tyree catch was the play of the year. Patriots do not go undefeated. And Tom Petty rocked the house did not play a medley.

fixed

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:57 (sixteen years ago) link

was it? let me know if you find anything on what the line was exactly. I think 5 of those points had to be automatically assessed due to the fact that the NFC hadn't lost in about 17 years! :)

well I still have to give second to the Giants just cuz the Patsies were undefeated. the dropoff could have been significant in the perception had the lost just as much as one game in the regular season.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:59 (sixteen years ago) link

DUDE. THE PATRIOTS LOST.

had the lost just as much as one game in the regular season.

Besides, man, I don't need the reminder, I've been celebrating their loss for the last 3 hours...:)

YOU CAN NOT PUT THE TEAM THAT WON THE SUPER BOWLZ IN SECOND PLACE.

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Monday, 4 February 2008 05:12 (sixteen years ago) link

I didn't.

I said in terms of greatest upsets of all time, this one is in second place behind the New York Jets defeating the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl 3.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Monday, 4 February 2008 05:13 (sixteen years ago) link

well I still have to give second to the Giants just cuz the Patsies were undefeated.

^^^^^^^^^ WHAT THE FUCK DOES THIS SENTENCE SAY

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Monday, 4 February 2008 05:14 (sixteen years ago) link

I see why what I said was confusing...

When I said I gave the Giants second place because the Patriots were undefeated, that was to the gentleman that included the Packers-Patriots game as an entry for one of the biggest super Bowl upsets of all time. My response was saying to him that I still considered the Giants' upset the second best because the team they beat was undefeated.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Monday, 4 February 2008 05:15 (sixteen years ago) link

guys its one thing to pick the giants - but to predict the pats only score 20 points - krazy

omar little, Monday, 4 February 2008 05:15 (sixteen years ago) link

ya if you replayed that super bowl 10 times I guarantee you THE PATRIOTS WOULD WEURIENA ALL 10 TIMES OMGOMGOMGOM

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Monday, 4 February 2008 05:17 (sixteen years ago) link

its a complete fluke the giants made it this far. if the playoff were run 10 more times i doubt theyd make it to the superbowl once. and theyre abt to get so fucking demolished.

omar little, Monday, 4 February 2008 05:17 (sixteen years ago) link

see, dan esk, i don't think just b/c a game is close it's necessarily a good game. i factored those games you mentioned into my assessment and i feel like those were just close games, but this was a genuinely taut, well-played game.

This one was the best BECAUSE THE PATRIOTS LOST.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 4 February 2008 05:17 (sixteen years ago) link

ahahahha...

man jhoshea's given us material for another 8 months

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Monday, 4 February 2008 05:18 (sixteen years ago) link

the reasons this game was so good:

1. The Patriots lost at the hands of ANOTHER Manning in the playoffs.
2. Very little laundry on the field during the game.
3. Little to no controversy.
4. Strong defensive play as opposed to offensive ineptitude (cough Steelers-Seahawks super bowl)
5. Both teams trading tds within the last 2:42.
6. 85 yard game winning TD drive.
7. Fuck Terrell Owens. Tyree="The Catch, II". Who cares if they ain't the 49ers, and it wasn't a touchdown pass. Without it, there is no td pass later.
8. Compared to the humongous fanfare preceding the game, this was just a classic, non-pretentious football game with little histrionics until the very end, where they belonged.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Monday, 4 February 2008 05:22 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, me too. I hope this year's better than the last one. 2004 sucked but the Pats came through that time

daria-g, Monday, 4 February 2008 05:54 (sixteen years ago) link

i wasn't right about nothin other than the fact that it wasn't a blowout.

still entertaining to see jhoshea's quotes later though.
