I was thinking some early Mercyful Fate might fit the bill here too?

Actually, one of the better recent prog/power metal albums I've heard recently has been the one by an Italian band called Pathosray.

Power metal bands sure do have ugly singers. Let's not forget the mighty WARLORD : http://youtube.com/watch?v=OYPVpPoJOlc

Does Accept count as power metal? Cause I was listening to them a lot the first half of this week, for some reason - mostly Metal Heart and Kaizoku-Ban.
― unperson, Saturday, 5 January 2008 23:31 (sixteen years ago) link
why do you think i put a link to a live version of metal heart up there? they are one of power metal's many gay grandads.

Sonata Arctica are pretty rad, but apparently I'm the only one anywhere who likes their new album. Totally awesome keyboard-driven melodic Finnish stuff. Check out the live album, For the Sake of Revenge, or their previous album, Reckoning Night.

i still dig this a bunch:
http://www.themetallist.com/webzine/img/covers/680.jpg
from last year? year before? anyway, very strong power/prog. it's really just a savatage album. most of the songs were gonna go on future savatage records.

Avantasia, part 1 (the concept album done by Edguy's singer) is pretty much my favorite power metal album ever. Which Edguy albums are this good?

If the world ever gets good, we'll have Rolling Power Metal threads.

New issue of Metal Edge (Sept. 08; All That Remains cover) has a six page rundown of the 25 Essential Power Metal Albums. Just sayin'.

-- BigLurks,
Tr00 Edguy fans point to everything up to but not including Hellfire Club. At that point they start to alienate some of their fans with songs about personal experiences, unveiled by epic metaphors.
Personally I love Hellfire Club and even Rocket Ride, the album after. Party metal vibes, and a distinct, if slightly German, sense of humour are beginning to appear, and they're slowly losing aspects of their Jungian, shamanic inner journey thing.
I think Tobias Sammet writes excellent lyrics incidentally - I especially like 'Down to the Devil' from Hellfire Club. But yeah, my view (unlikely to be shared by many) is that you can't go wrong with Edguy - I actually would go one step further and say Tobias Sammet is a strikingly brilliant songwriter, one of the best in power metal.

I loved Rocket Ride. And the recent Avantasia album is good as well. Yeah, I'd say Sammet is the best power metal singer going today.

Only really familiar with Helloween's Keeper duology, but the japanese band Marge Litch sounds like power metal to me, quite good...

I wouldn't have thought that would fall under Power Metal but I have a lot to learn.
The band is Ad Infinitum, in case that link dies.

I'm not an expert either but they describe themselves as a 'symphonic power metal' band.

Really want to dig into more of this when I'm reunited with my CD player. Adored that Marge Litch album (talked about it more in the prog v3.0 thread). Quite eager to hear Fate's Warning and Crimson Glory.
