Test-driving an iPad this Christmas holiday. What should I be using this for? I'm ten minutes in - browsing ilx at the airport and I have to say its a bit awkward!

It gets easier.

Web browse like crazy, install Instapaper, Flipboard, Twitter, Netflix, Carcassonne, Reeder, Cloudreaders, iA Writer, and maybe a few other games.

why is it awkward v? (I don't have one)

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 19 December 2010 20:14 (thirteen years ago) link

it's awkward because you can't type with your hands (too small) and you can type with your thumbs (too big) so I just end up awkwardly stabbing at it with one finger. i guess it's not the best for creating content?

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 19 December 2010 23:55 (thirteen years ago) link

I want one for tertiary ed next year (best available software/interface for what I'm doing) but am not quite sure if I want to spend that much, and I really dislike the low-res screen.

Will wait until the next iPad is released regardless, 'sif I'm buying something with 256 Mb memory (my PHONE has twice that ffs).

no, it's primarily a content consumption device xp

dayo, Monday, 20 December 2010 00:23 (thirteen years ago) link

I was surprised how easy it was to go from touch-typing on a reg. keyboard to modified 2-finger/4-finger typing on the ipad. But yeah, it's not good if you have to do a lot of keyboarding.

pixel farmer, Monday, 20 December 2010 00:33 (thirteen years ago) link

If you want to make an Apple fanboy REALLY angry, assert that it's not a content creation device. They get soooo wound up.

I have a sneaking suspicion it's geared toward making me buy stuff from the iTunes store more than anything else

^ solitary posts that sum up the spirit of apple inc.

this is pretty ill http://techcraver.com/2010/12/19/add-a-screen-to-your-computer-with-air-display-for-ipad

ice cr?m, Monday, 20 December 2010 07:02 (thirteen years ago) link

Does Apple only sell the 27" display right now? I'm assuming their policy is that if you want something smaller, you can just buy an iMac and use that, but I kind of want a slightly smaller monitor.

I recently set up my desk again and have my older 20" monitor (Dell, but one of the nicer displays they've made) sitting side by side with my 15" laptop, and... they're the same resolution. It's creepy, because when I first attached it, it mirrored the displays and you end up with one that has huge text and one with tiny text.

mh, Monday, 20 December 2010 14:55 (thirteen years ago) link

is there any good reason to buy an apple display though? aren't there plenty of comparable displays for much much much less?

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Monday, 20 December 2010 16:10 (thirteen years ago) link

the cinema displays are much prettier

max, Monday, 20 December 2010 16:11 (thirteen years ago) link

They have that awesome single cable that splits out into a charger/mini displayport/usb plug, too.

mh, Monday, 20 December 2010 16:24 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah but you can get a dell or something for half the price

Jefferson Mansplain (DG), Monday, 20 December 2010 17:28 (thirteen years ago) link

the price keeps fluctuating, but i bought a Dell 2209wa monitor for around 300$ when my old Lacie CRT blew. It's one one of the only e-IPS monitors, quality almost as good as an Apple Cinema Display at a price closer to your run of the mill shitty monitor.

dan selzer, Monday, 20 December 2010 17:30 (thirteen years ago) link

^ban as well

Jefferson Mansplain (DG), Monday, 20 December 2010 17:31 (thirteen years ago) link

Dell makes really good monitors for the price. I've worked in many mac-based graphics departments that used Dell monitors.

dan selzer, Monday, 20 December 2010 17:32 (thirteen years ago) link

apple displays are unsurpassable but priced at a premium so

ice cr?m, Monday, 20 December 2010 17:33 (thirteen years ago) link

There are better monitors:

I want that new Microsoft mouse, it is awesome and would look amazing attached to a Mac, I swear.

I would be into monitor recommendations, we can take it to another thread if necessary. Kind of weirded out that no one else seems to be using DisplayPort, but I'm using a DVI adapter now and am cool with that.

mh, Monday, 20 December 2010 18:31 (thirteen years ago) link

I like my 2 Samsung Sync Master 2443s. They rotate and I normally have one portrait and one landscape.
