so I shipped it off yesterday by speedpost but there was a sign that said "due to heightened aviation security, parcels to the united states will experience delays of unknown duration"

so now I'm all http://i573.photobucket.com/albums/ss180/marjanv1/smiley-girl-biting-fingernails.gif

do u guys get everything developed by mr dwayne? or just kodachrome (RIP)

kanellos (gbx), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 20:36 (thirteen years ago) link

since I have limited options locally, if i'm getting lots of black & white, slide, or 120 done all at once it's way cheaper to ship it to Dwayne's. I still just use costco for my C-41 though.

The first was a railroad worker who had driven from Arkansas to pick up 1,580 rolls of film that he had just paid $15,798 to develop. ... The artist, Aliceson Carter, 42, was incredulous as she watched the railroad worker, Jim DeNike, 53, loading a dozen boxes that contained nearly 50,000 slides into his old maroon Pontiac. He explained that every picture inside was of railroad trains and that he had borrowed money from his father’s retirement account to pay for developing them.

Anybody get anything back from Dwayne's yet? I got some the other day. From what I can tell the slides look great, but yowza those are some of the worst scans I've seen in my life!
In other news, my local developer gave me a bottle of wine when I picked up a bunch of rolls yesterday. I was ELATED!

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Sunday, 2 January 2011 04:43 (thirteen years ago) link

dwaynes scanning sucks, or at least it does for kodachrome. otoh kodachrome is a notoriously hard film to scan

dayo, Sunday, 2 January 2011 04:45 (thirteen years ago) link

Pleased with the non-kodachrome scans I've gotten from them. I even sold one for a magazine ad.

The first time I got kodachrome scans from them they were beautiful but the last roll I got was crappy.

I have heard the same about the difficulty of scanning kodachrome. I'll have to see how my place here does with it.

gr8080, Friday, 25 February 2011 21:18 (thirteen years ago) link

yah it's at home in the states I will take a crack at it in the summer

Neu! romancer (dayo), Saturday, 26 February 2011 01:49 (thirteen years ago) link

i noticed you had me send my zines to the states too- is HK's postal system untrustworthy?

gr8080, Saturday, 26 February 2011 01:51 (thirteen years ago) link

nah it's prob the best I have ever used, but I dunno about my long term plans here so I wanna lighten my load as much as possible

currently looking at taking home 300+ sheets of negatives, it's gonna weigh a ton ;_;

Neu! romancer (dayo), Saturday, 26 February 2011 02:21 (thirteen years ago) link

it costs like 10 cents to send mail here, and worldwide shipping is so cheap, I guess cuz its all so efficient

Neu! romancer (dayo), Saturday, 26 February 2011 02:25 (thirteen years ago) link

dayo when u are taking photos in hong kong do u feel like christopher doyle

plax (ico), Saturday, 26 February 2011 02:29 (thirteen years ago) link

haha I shoot mainly B&W so not really. but I should rewatch his stuff more to get ~inspired~

I just shot 9 rolls of color in the last month, scanning now, see how doyle-y it is

Neu! romancer (dayo), Saturday, 26 February 2011 02:31 (thirteen years ago) link

i dont get why ppl shoot with b+w when colour photographs exist

plax (ico), Saturday, 26 February 2011 02:32 (thirteen years ago) link

what is the reason for that

plax (ico), Saturday, 26 February 2011 02:33 (thirteen years ago) link

its cheaper for one thing

Neu! romancer (dayo), Saturday, 26 February 2011 02:34 (thirteen years ago) link

it abstracts the thing represented and makes it seem less verisimilar

Neu! romancer (dayo), Saturday, 26 February 2011 02:37 (thirteen years ago) link

but its like isnt it a pain in the ass. Idk i think its obvious i know like maybe three things about taking photographs if you count "what is a photograph?" and "where is your camera?" so im sorry if all i do is ask u q.s itts

plax (ico), Saturday, 26 February 2011 02:37 (thirteen years ago) link

but i mean, its like

colours

plax (ico), Saturday, 26 February 2011 02:38 (thirteen years ago) link

its become part of the fabric of photographic tradition

Neu! romancer (dayo), Saturday, 26 February 2011 02:38 (thirteen years ago) link

well I dunno I feel like one thing photographers fight against is the tendency for their pictures to only be thought of as documentary, existential fact instead of something deeper or more significant. colors kind of draw you into that hole because they approximate reality more than B&W. (although digital has shown that most color film, slide and negative, is kind of actually lol w/r/t verisimilitude).

Neu! romancer (dayo), Saturday, 26 February 2011 02:40 (thirteen years ago) link

it is kind of funny tho HK is like one of the most colorful cities on the planet and Im discarding so much info everytime I shoot

Neu! romancer (dayo), Saturday, 26 February 2011 02:41 (thirteen years ago) link

its just colours are so pretty i wouldnt give that up

plax (ico), Saturday, 26 February 2011 02:44 (thirteen years ago) link

black and white is very pretty too

gr8080, Saturday, 26 February 2011 02:45 (thirteen years ago) link

yah the best feeling in the world is getting slides back and holding them against a light and being all like "I am holding a piece of the world in my hands"

Neu! romancer (dayo), Saturday, 26 February 2011 02:46 (thirteen years ago) link

Im not too happy with the color films Ive tried so far tho

Neu! romancer (dayo), Saturday, 26 February 2011 03:18 (thirteen years ago) link

I do probably 1 roll of B&W for every 6 in color. I like Friedlander a lot and get inspired, but then what if I'm walking around and see this:

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5169/5374162966_842c11399b.jpg

and have B&W loaded in my camera? Disaster!

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Saturday, 26 February 2011 04:02 (thirteen years ago) link

I develop B&W myself so it saves money - after the initial investment in equipment it comes out to like, 5-10 cents worth of chemicals per roll

Neu! romancer (dayo), Saturday, 26 February 2011 04:09 (thirteen years ago) link

Ah there's that. I've never set foot in a darkroom myself. My main concern is getting good scans from my lab (the resolution is great, but sometimes the contrast is too high; we're working on that).

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Saturday, 26 February 2011 04:27 (thirteen years ago) link

you don't need a darkroom to develop

Neu! romancer (dayo), Saturday, 26 February 2011 07:56 (thirteen years ago) link

re: B&W vs shooting color - one reason is that color negs will (most likely) start to fade in a couple of decades, B&W negatives are about as archival as archival gets. Less relevant in the days of digital, when our grandkids are going to find an old external drive in our shit and not have any knowledge of what it is, no way to hook it up to their holographic computers and most likely no way to read the files anyway. But maybe that's a good reason to keep a camera loaded with Tri-X as well.

Every B&W films has a specific look to it (the grain structure, the way they respond to different wavelengths of light, etc.) that isn't really obtainable by converting color (neg, slide or digital) in post.

yeah I cut and sleeved it but I didn't get a chance to scan it yet

dayo, Friday, 2 September 2011 17:04 (twelve years ago) link

would like to get a dedicated 35mm scanner for kodachrome since it's hard to scan. but dunno when that will be!

dayo, Friday, 2 September 2011 17:05 (twelve years ago) link

the exposures look okay just from eyeballing it - I was p worried and bracketed, but I think I'll get some usable shots

dayo, Friday, 2 September 2011 17:05 (twelve years ago) link

did you even consider paying dwayne's to scan them? even if they're shitty scans, you'd have something, and can get the good ones scanned later

 (gr8080), Friday, 2 September 2011 17:08 (twelve years ago) link

I had dwayne's scan one roll as a 'test' and my home scanner (epson v500) did a better job!

dayo, Friday, 2 September 2011 17:10 (twelve years ago) link

they were also really curly from being in a tube for 6 months so they're flattening under a box atm

dayo, Friday, 2 September 2011 17:10 (twelve years ago) link

My last roll of Kodachrome was a total dud. Too much pressure!
I'll be curious to know what kind of success you have with scanning your rolls. My lab scans from Dwayne's were baaaad, and my home scans are were little difficult, as it turns out. But as I said, it wasn't a great roll so I'm not too concerned! Using a Plustek, btw. Which I love, but I think it's maybe just a little harder to scan Kodachrome.
