Based purely on common sense:

- front-facing camera: almost certainly (facetime evangelism ahoy)
- rear-facing camera: probably
- 512 Mb RAM or higher: definitely
- higher-res screen: probably not, sadly (retina screens in that size are ridiculous atm, and I can't see Apple jumping up a small amount for one or two years)
- flat bottom: very likely
- a 7" model: nah

i just inherited a first-gen macbook!! the speed improvement from my g4 is like, whoa

i can see why apple is moving toward ipads, etc - there simply isn't a need (right now) for computers that are much faster than a 1st-gen macbook. honestly. CS5 starts within a second or two. it plays HD video flawlessly. i'm in looove

Mac App Store is a bit disappointing.

It's like John Gruber guest-blogging for Carles.

James Mitchell, Thursday, 6 January 2011 23:14 (thirteen years ago) link

That's fantastic.

There should be an actual physical punishment for people who can't design interfaces properly.

are you fucking serious?

“let’s make the app look like an old wooden-“

white cdma iphones

did i spoil everything?

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 15:47 (thirteen years ago) link

my understanding is that on verizone you won't be able to go on the web and call at the same time (I never do this anyway but I could see not being able to do it being annoying); any chance that this is something that could ultimately be fixed with software or are we going to have to wait for new iphones to do that?

akm, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 15:49 (thirteen years ago) link

That would be good, if CDMA was only available in white, and vice versa.

Alba, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 15:50 (thirteen years ago) link

U GUYS ITS PURPLE IPHONES << HOT TIP

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 15:51 (thirteen years ago) link

they should make Edge-only phones in mint-green, and budget GPRS phones in hot pink

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 15:52 (thirteen years ago) link

akm, it'll be fixed when Verizon upgrades their towers to a completely new technology, as far as I know. That'll require yet another phone, though. I believe CDMA just doesn't let you do that.

IPHONE FLIP PHONES 2 BE ANNOUNCED TODAY

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 15:55 (thirteen years ago) link

verizon is supposed to be rolling out 4g this year as well, is that at all related? this crap gets confusing to me quickly.

Main hash:

Verizon's Lowell McAdam is on-stage.
- Setting context with CES and the convergence of data, broadband, and video. "Today two innovators are coming together."
- Talking about FiOS, new 4G LTE network rolling out. "We debated calling this 6G" - responding to other carriers such as AT&T rebranding their HSPA+ service as "4G".
- Today announcing that the iPhone 4 will be available on Verizon early next month.
- Has all the features you expect: FaceTime, Retina display, 5-megapixel camera with HD video, custom A4 chip, etc.
- Verizon's Dan Mead on stage to talk about launch details.
- Verizon employees getting the iPhone this week. Ramping unprecedented supply in inventory system.
- Talking about network preparations...have been building in capacity to handle the coming surge.
- Current Verizon customers can pre-order beginning February 3rd. Available to all at Verizon and Apple stores on February 10th.
- Pricing is $199 for 16 GB, $299 for 32 GB. Can also act as Wi-Fi hotspot for up to five devices.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 16:21 (thirteen years ago) link

how much per month is really all I care about. att is absurd.

This shit needs to happen for everybody. Fukc o2.

If it's anything like the UK, the carriers plans' will be so close price-wise as to make it not worth switching.

lte on this shit?

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 16:57 (thirteen years ago) link

no

dan selzer, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 17:03 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah since it's not 4G I'm trying to decide between getting one of these or the HTC Thunderbolt. they haven't said when that's actually being released though.

dmr, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 17:17 (thirteen years ago) link

I'll probably get this. And if it feels slow, I'll upgrade to the LTE iPhone 5 that'll come out a few months later, at a great cost, or just wait it out for 2 years or until it breaks. Thunderbolt looks cool, but I use my girlfriend's HTC Android phone, and I find it annoying. Maybe a newer/better android phone wouldn't make me want an iPhone so bad, but who knows.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 17:29 (thirteen years ago) link

think im gonna wait for iphone 5

max, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 17:30 (thirteen years ago) link

me too

markers, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 17:33 (thirteen years ago) link

all I have right now is a crappy texting phone so I'm not gonna wait months. (I was actually just about to get an HTC Incredible next week so it's good timing for all this to go down.) if the Thunderbolt's not coming out until summer or whatever then I'll def. get an iPhone 4. (some reports have said "midyear" for the first Verizon LTE phone)

dmr, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 18:14 (thirteen years ago) link

I use my girlfriend's HTC Android phone, and I find it annoying.

good to know, I've only messed with it in the store. seems to get the best reviews of all the Android brands.

dmr, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 18:19 (thirteen years ago) link

Which HTC Android phone? I thought there were a few.

chev rivera (mh), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 18:46 (thirteen years ago) link

I have the HTC desire (the /best/ android phone I think) (unless the nexus s has no superseded it) and it is annoying

geronimo (cozen), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 18:50 (thirteen years ago) link

xpost - there are a few, I assumed Dan was talking about the Incredible which (I think) is the only HTC phone that Verizon has right now (until the Thunderbolt comes out)

dmr, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 18:59 (thirteen years ago) link

ah yeah, got me. Her android phone is an Eris, which is relatively ancient. Perhaps with a snappier processor I'd like it more, but just general stuff like typing, I find so much easier on my iPod Touch. And there's all that stuff with appkillers and this and that. I'm a pretty solid apple fanboy so I'm sure I'd end up regretting going with an android phone.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 19:01 (thirteen years ago) link

so apple could potentially roll out an iphone 5 for att but not for verizon this summer?

max, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 19:08 (thirteen years ago) link

Doubtful

chev rivera (mh), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 19:11 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm a pretty solid Apple fanboy too (got a Macbook) but I'm worried about locking in on a 3G phone when 4G's about to roll out. I'll probably go ahead and do it though.

xpost - it's possible

dmr, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 19:12 (thirteen years ago) link

consensus seems to be that lte is unlikely before end of 2011

max, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 19:12 (thirteen years ago) link

the chipsets are too big

max, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 19:13 (thirteen years ago) link

Could be, GSM market is much bigger counting the rest of the world. I wouldn't be surprised if summer sees a "4GS" (processor and ram bump, not much else) before a full blown iPhone 5 with LTE in 2012. I was wrong about verizon happing now, so what do I know?

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 19:15 (thirteen years ago) link

don't apple usually have some sort of conference & announce new product in jan? was this verizon thing it or is there something else coming?
