I hear my neighbors screwing and still I don't want to annoy them in return: practice amps, headphone amps, pocket amps etc

one year passes...

any new recommendations for "pocket amps"? dunno if that's what they're really called but whatever

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 3 May 2012 17:10 (eleven years ago) link

i bought an isolation cabinet from Axe Trak last year and like it a lot. you run the line out from your amp into the cabinet. the cabinet has a speaker and microphone built into it. it gives a good representation of your amp and it is very quiet. it's like $400 tho

here's what it can sound like. at 25 seconds in is the description of what is going on with the Axe Trak

Vox AC15

correction: the last one should be Vox Pathfinder 15R and the Fender might not fit here

anyway, digital modeling practice amps... garbage or ?

i really like my pathfinder 10, but would probably would have coughed up for the 15 if i'd realized that it had tremolo in it. it's a good little practice amp. way the fuck better than the peavy i used to use when i was a kid. i have a cheap pair of sennheiser headphones to plug into it too, so i can play while the kids are asleep.

I don't know about the other ones.

didn't know there was a 10! i kinda want something bigger but with the same function of the headphone jack cutting off the speaker

or i could just get one of those amplugs, they're pretty cheap

maybe not the most apt thread, but - i was using my old (maybe 15 years) semi-broken (e.g. very fuzzy output) practice amp and as i picked up the lead, already in the input, to attach it to the last of my pedals, i got a pretty nasty shock up my arm from touching the metal tip. is that likely to be just static or should i be leaning towards binning the old fella?

that doesn't sound good. if you felt the shock travel up your arm, it's prob beyond a static discharge. Does the amp have a grounded plug on it?

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Friday, 12 April 2013 18:36 (eleven years ago) link

it's the standard three-prong uk plug, i think those are always grounded?

a similar stunt failed to work with a cow (Merdeyeux), Friday, 12 April 2013 18:41 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, it should be. could be a problem with the ground at the outlet. are your pedals plugged into the same outlet?

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Friday, 12 April 2013 18:59 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, although only two were on mains power, which didn't include the final two in the chain, if that matters? i was rearranging them, had just unplugged from the last in the chain and then when i picked up the lead to plug it back into the chain came the shock.

i was just trying to see if there was some unshared ground issue. idk man, unless you are really attached to the amp, i'd look for a replacement. if you have a multimeter, you could check for ac voltage from tip to ground.

ya i think it'll be going, if my music was any good i'd be okay with risking dying for my art but i'm not dying for this pish. i'll miss ur one of a kind busted fuzz, bb. (thanks for your help, j.)

I'm probably going to be buying a bass soon. What are some of the best bass practice amps?

how's life, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 17:25 (ten years ago) link

the little peavey max 158 is pretty good, dig some of the small ashdown stuff. honestly they are all pretty much the same - lean towards a larger speaker if you are choosing between stuff, ive never heard a 6.5" bass speaker sound anything other than awful

my voxpathfinder 10 has died, i quite liked it but wasn't hugely committed to it and would be willing to pay a little more for a replacement. any suggestions?

i really like my yamaha thr5 - five amp models (inc a pretty sweet vox one), effects, line in and headphones out. a second-hand one would probably cost around the same as a new pathfinder i think?
