I'd have troubel imagining the new album working in a club setting, but then I say that about a lot of things and end up being surprised when they do. He's getting a band together so he can perform the tracks live, so I hear.

i saw nico at the wolf and lamb xmas party at Sankeys in manchester. It was quite possibly one of best atmospheres i have ever experienced in a club. He started of at 70bpm and the crowd lapped it up , it made the changes throughout the set epic and his music on a good quality sound system was incredible. The man was like an artist and the whole crowd responded. he even SANG the vocal parts on his tracks - NO JOKE! i love my tech house/ deep house / minimal nights where the dancing is relentless however seeing Jaar is something different and something special - dont judge until you see his live act in a club setting - its surprising how well it works. He is the 2nd best live act in the Resident advisor polls for a reason.

plax (ico), Wednesday, 12 January 2011 23:06 (thirteen years ago) link

What you guys think of the album?

rihanna rennavated my dick (rennavate), Friday, 14 January 2011 00:23 (thirteen years ago) link

It's growing on me actually. I was comparing it to James Blake upthread, and while there are similarities, it's a lot less slap-dash than his album.

Bernard V. O'Hare (dog latin), Friday, 14 January 2011 01:17 (thirteen years ago) link

I would say the key distinction between Jaar and Blake is that Jaar can be loose but is never messy.

Tim F, Friday, 14 January 2011 01:25 (thirteen years ago) link

At the moment it's reminding me of Joakim's first couple of albums. Only a bit sonically, but mainly due to the sense of 4-5 really nice pieces being lost in the haze of excessive interludes, transitions, intros, and outros.

Jedmond, Friday, 14 January 2011 01:31 (thirteen years ago) link

i like the album (on one listen) but, while i wouldn't say it's a disappointment exactly - i should at least give it time to grow on me - i prefer the singles. it's not necessarily the non-dancefloor focus that's the reason, i just feel like there's less focus full stop. people who are disappointed by it could do a lot worse than checking out frivolous's imminent meteorology album on cadenza

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Friday, 14 January 2011 07:44 (thirteen years ago) link

How similar is Meteorology to his Couples Therapy 12"?

Jedmond, Friday, 14 January 2011 08:09 (thirteen years ago) link

Which I loved, partly because it reminded me Horror Inc.

Jedmond, Friday, 14 January 2011 08:13 (thirteen years ago) link

no idea - this is the first frivolous stuff i've heard.

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Friday, 14 January 2011 08:13 (thirteen years ago) link

but clearly i need to hear it if it reminds you of horror inc!

(not my first point of comparison for the album, which sounds a lot warmer, but thinking about it the intricacy and use of melody are def comparable)

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Friday, 14 January 2011 08:19 (thirteen years ago) link

comparison/comparable aargh must drink coffee

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Friday, 14 January 2011 08:20 (thirteen years ago) link

Well I threw away the word "of" so... But on a re-listen it definitely sounds similar to Horror Inc (at least Horror Inc via Cadenza). Not just in terms of the intricacy, but also Frivolous' use of the same kind of musicbox and string sounds (at least on the track My Consciousness).

Jedmond, Friday, 14 January 2011 08:28 (thirteen years ago) link

Frivolous has pretty much always been on key.

EDB, Friday, 14 January 2011 15:43 (thirteen years ago) link

I would say the key distinction between Jaar and Blake is that Jaar can be loose but is never messy.

I think this is OTM. "Space Is Only Noise If You Can See" is awesome.

rihanna rennavated my dick (rennavate), Friday, 14 January 2011 22:24 (thirteen years ago) link

who here has seen him live again? like is it *actually* possible to dance yr ass off when this guy plays?

plax (ico), Friday, 14 January 2011 22:28 (thirteen years ago) link

I saw him, however he played to an huge, virtually empty room at 2PM. It was a lot of fun: he started out dancey, 110 bpmish, then pulled it down to downtempo stuff, where it did become more of a sliding and gliding affair. Also, this was last May, and I also kind of like the stuff he was doing a year ago more than his more up to date output.

EDB, Saturday, 15 January 2011 00:13 (thirteen years ago) link

I wish his sound design were more interesting -- I find a lot of the sounds themselves (electric pianos, or their stand-ins, for instance) a little underwhelming. The ideas are nice, but I wish the execution were a little more fully-formed.

And Plaxico, I don't really understand what you mean about my "deal" in that interview.

pshrbrn, Saturday, 15 January 2011 16:59 (thirteen years ago) link

i enjoyed the interview, no clue what plax meant

still undecided on the album, i love the vibe of it, but the vocals grate at times

idk its prolly a great interview

two weeks pass...

kinda surprised that people are disappointed with the album, i think it's amazing. it's funny cause i actually *do* feel that the ideas on this are more focused/fully-formed than those on say the ines comp, which seems a bit sketchier and more obtuse to me (almost idm, reminds me of earlier four tet at times). also i kinda love the vox, esp if you compare them to james blake or superpitcher or even caribou (and 'swim' was my favorite record last year fwiw)

just listened to 'marks' - heard this in dj sets before but omg this song is so amazing. total 7am dancefloor banger when you're not sure whether to go home or not

The album's clicked for me. I listened to it in the dark on headphones. It's very impressive, and much more singer/songwritey in places than James Blake. Really looking forward to catching him at Fabric in March - is anyone going to this? I have a feeling I may be on my jack.
