I'm a pretty solid Apple fanboy too (got a Macbook) but I'm worried about locking in on a 3G phone when 4G's about to roll out. I'll probably go ahead and do it though.

xpost - it's possible

consensus seems to be that lte is unlikely before end of 2011

the chipsets are too big

max, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 19:13 (thirteen years ago) link

Could be, GSM market is much bigger counting the rest of the world. I wouldn't be surprised if summer sees a "4GS" (processor and ram bump, not much else) before a full blown iPhone 5 with LTE in 2012. I was wrong about verizon happing now, so what do I know?

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 19:15 (thirteen years ago) link

don't apple usually have some sort of conference & announce new product in jan? was this verizon thing it or is there something else coming?

jed_, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 13:47 (thirteen years ago) link

MacWorld Expo is in a few weeks. No clue what product updates are coming.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 13:48 (thirteen years ago) link

There is MacWorld San Francisco, but Apple pulled out of it a couple of years back, now they just do their developers conference in the summer and ad hoc PR events.

They stopped doing SF? Man, I have not been paying attention at all.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 13:55 (thirteen years ago) link

If Apple doesn't participate, then what goes on at MacWorld Expo? lol.

"check out this app"

dmr, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 16:16 (thirteen years ago) link

It's all the third-parties who make shit for Macs, iPhones, and iPods. So you end up with some developer and application stuff, and a lot of accessories afaik

Team,
At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health. I will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company.

I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for all of Apple's day to day operations. I have great confidence that Tim and the rest of the executive management team will do a terrific job executing the exciting plans we have in place for 2011.

I love Apple so much and hope to be back as soon as I can. In the meantime, my family and I would deeply appreciate respect for our privacy.

Steve

ice cr?m, Monday, 17 January 2011 14:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, doesn't seem good.

I'm trying to decide if I should hold out for iphone 5 (or iphone 4s or whatever it will be called) apparently due in June, or just go ahead and get the iphone 4. I I have a 3G, and plenty of apps just don't work. Some rumors have the iphone going for a total redesign inside and out. Other rumors point toward a new processor and other innards. Any thoughts?

Super Cub, Monday, 17 January 2011 18:25 (thirteen years ago) link

im trying to decide the same thing

max, Monday, 17 January 2011 19:10 (thirteen years ago) link

leaning towards waiting for the new one tho

max, Monday, 17 January 2011 19:11 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, i've heard that the new phone is going to be a significant redesign and that it'll probably have an A5 chip instead of an A4. i'd say there's no reason to get a new iPhone right now unless you absolutely need one. if you wait until 5 is released, you can see what you think about it, and if you don't think it's worth it then you can just buy the current iteration at a much cheaper price

also, this Jobs health news is awful, and i hope he bounces back and returns to "normal" ASAP

markers, Monday, 17 January 2011 19:17 (thirteen years ago) link

one more thing: it's going to be really weird to watch the iPad 2 keynote if, as it seems very likely, Jobs won't be doing it. if he's really sick, i could totally see a situation in which they just had Cook or Schiller do the whole thing

markers, Monday, 17 January 2011 19:22 (thirteen years ago) link

hate to say it but pancreatic cancer and "bounces back" dont usually go together

max, Monday, 17 January 2011 19:30 (thirteen years ago) link

some random guy on the internet says: "what he had was a curable type of cancer, a rare form, not your typical pancreatic cancer. What really is far more likely is transplant rejection, and his doctors probably asked him to take some time off and are going to play around with his immunosuppresant medications. Just a guess though."

just woke up (lukas), Monday, 17 January 2011 19:34 (thirteen years ago) link

Here's some more info, from the New York Times article about this:

Dr. Lewis W. Teperman, the director of transplant surgery and vice chairman of surgery at the Langone Medical Center of New York University, said a variety of problems could affect someone with a liver transplant. Dr. Teperman has not been involved in Mr. Jobs’s care and said he had no knowledge of the case.

“It’s very common for transplant patients to have issues that are not life-threatening,” Dr. Teperman said. “We give them very strong, high-powered medications, immunosuppressants, to prevent rejection. It’s a delicate balance, more art than science.”

Side effects from the drugs can make patients ill, and sometimes the regimen has to be changed, a process that can take days and weeks. The side-effects include high blood sugar and diabetes, kidney damage, diarrhea, high blood pressure, high blood fats and cholesterol, rashes and low counts of white blood cells. The drugs leave patients prone to infection.

Rejection of the transplanted liver is also a possibility, but Dr. Teperman said it was extremely rare for a liver transplant to be totally rejected.

The original reason for Mr. Jobs’s transplant was never publicly disclosed. At the time, doctors not involved in his case said the most likely reason was that his pancreatic cancer had spread to his liver. If that was the case, it is possible that cancer has recurred; the anti-rejection drugs can increase the odds of cancer recurrence. A recurrence may be treatable. But so little information has been disclosed that it is impossible to tell, Dr. Teperman said.

“There are lots of bumps in the road with transplantations, and people usually get through them,” he said.

markers, Monday, 17 January 2011 19:37 (thirteen years ago) link

it has like a 95% mortality rate after treatment but my understanding with pancreatic cancer is that if you're lucky enough to still be alive six years later like jobs then you're cured, and whatever else (complications from transplant?) is jobs's problem is not due to panny canny.

is there a way to configure a non-jailbroken iphone so that only certain numbers can call you/text you? (can you do this on android?)

markers, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 01:21 (thirteen years ago) link

Just give people a Google Voice number and not your real one, imo

sectarian chicken (mh), Tuesday, 18 January 2011 01:48 (thirteen years ago) link

OT: would people be creeped if their calls and txts to me were being managed by Google? Thinking of moving to Google Voice and I'm not sure what the ethic is here.

i used tried out google voice via the web interface a little bit in 2009 and haven't really looked at it since; i'm hesitant to use it again, but i'll check it out. thanks!

I’m almost certain Apple has never before sold 4 million Macs in a quarter. And I love the almost off-handed tone of the sentence announcing the iPad number.

They really did beat Wall Street’s revenue consensus by $2 billion.

Clearly comparative year-on-year figures aren't simple enough for @gruber. Surprised he didn't go with "iPad sales up INFINITY per cent on 2009".

dmr, Friday, 4 February 2011 14:02 (thirteen years ago) link

I got one.

dan selzer, Friday, 4 February 2011 15:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Order's been placed w/ Fedex but hasn't shipped. Sounds like the first batch went out already and the next batch got stuck due to snow. I'm guessing I'm in the next batch but should still get it early next week. Assuming someone's around to sign for it. If not I get to dig out my car and drive to maspeth to pick it up.

dan selzer, Friday, 4 February 2011 15:28 (thirteen years ago) link

I didn't even try tbh. Shannon did. Web page never loaded until late in the evening, then just said "sold out."

dmr, Friday, 4 February 2011 18:16 (thirteen years ago) link

I DJ'd Dazzle Ships wed night so I came home, had a snack and next thing I knew it was 2:45 and I was looking at Google Reader and started seeing posts saying "pre-orders are now being accepted early" so I went and ordered one. Then I got 4 hours of sleep and went to work. So at least it wasn't like I stayed up all night sitting at home waiting to buy the thing (though I probably would've!).
