yeah ok. weird to think waka could potentially be a more successful crossover artist but really nowadays who knows

really excited to hear this mixtape. haven't had proper internet connection all week so i haven't heard 'gucci 2x' or anything. wanna stay up till 10.17 your time

Didn't seem like Gucci & Waka ever really fell out despite the former cutting his ties to Mizzay?

And yeah, Gucci probably has a stronger fanbase, but "No Hands" is a bigger hit than Gucci has had.

flutes & fucking mexican death horns (The Reverend), Friday, 14 January 2011 20:55 (thirteen years ago) link

i like 'no hands' a lot but wonder if a lot of the crossover appeal is the hook etc and not waka

whitney from mtv's the city (tpp), Friday, 14 January 2011 20:57 (thirteen years ago) link

waka's appeal is more straightforward at some level but also prob more one dimensional / less enduring in the long run

*gets the power* (deej), Friday, 14 January 2011 20:58 (thirteen years ago) link

xpYeah, Waka's not really a huge presence on it, compared to Roscoe, but it's certainly building on the buzz and momentum had from "O Let's Do It"/"Hard in the Paint" more than Whale or Roscoe Dash's burgeoning careers.

incidently gucci's album outsold waka's first week sales wise

*gets the power* (deej), Friday, 14 January 2011 21:01 (thirteen years ago) link

what the second one??

61k first week of The Appeal vs. 37k first week of Flockaveli...i wouldn't be surprised if the latter's sold more by now

some dude, Friday, 14 January 2011 21:47 (thirteen years ago) link

i wouldnt either although appeal was still floating around the charts a few weeks after it dropped. burrrprint 2 hd did that too

*gets the power* (deej), Friday, 14 January 2011 21:52 (thirteen years ago) link

Flockaveli is still on the charts, whereas Appeal is not.

flutes & fucking mexican death horns (The Reverend), Friday, 14 January 2011 22:08 (thirteen years ago) link

nobody who isn't a septuagenarian is gonna type out "waka flocka flame"

zvookster, Friday, 14 January 2011 22:36 (thirteen years ago) link

flockaveli as of November 7, 2010 the album has sold 86,000 copies in the United States

the appeal has sold an estimated 100,000 copies as of the week ending October 24, 2010

both those figs are 2+ months old and from pretty shortly after they were released, don't really tell us any more than the first week figures

some dude, Friday, 14 January 2011 22:43 (thirteen years ago) link

haha removing the "flame" really does change it substantially!

some dude, Friday, 14 January 2011 22:44 (thirteen years ago) link

yah but call him 'gucci' & ... etc

*gets the power* (deej), Friday, 14 January 2011 22:47 (thirteen years ago) link

you'd have to be pretty new to the internet if you think typing "gucci" is the quickest way to find information on him, as opposed to shortening the name of a guy who's name is three nonsense words

yeah i know, im sure waka has gained some ground but at best they're in the same ballpark. its not like flockaveli is crushing him or something

had a serious crowd from 12:30-3:30, prolly the biggest ever. Kind of annoyed at myself that I didn't ask for a cut of the bar in my guarantee, because people were going ham. I played "Gucci Time," "I Just Wanna Party," "Whip It Up" and "Hard In Da Paint." Kind of regretting not sneaking "Let Me Smang It" in there.

Deej and/or other DJs: do you find people react differently to pre-Dre, breakbeat-era hip-hop? I remember playing a wedding and no one would dance to all the 60s/70s shit because there was no drum machines. I was doing a successful all hip-hop night but was scared to play anything that didn't sound "modern" since ppl were diggin it. I think the earliest song I played was Blahzay Blahzay. Really wanted to play "Know The Ledge" after it got packed so I could feel like I was in Juice.

also, like every Lex Luger song exists in this 70-72 bpm clusterfuck on my computer, lol

I Lost A COGHdrop in His Pato (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 15 January 2011 16:24 (thirteen years ago) link

it would be interesting to kind of figure out what old rap songs still work in clubs and if there's some connection to whether the production style is at all similar to modern stuff

some dude, Saturday, 15 January 2011 16:29 (thirteen years ago) link

i had no fucking idea Lex was only 19

was a cool interview with him in XXL where he indirectly suggested the reason his beats 'all sound the same' is cuz the rappers just choose the ones that sound like BMF and MC Hammer.

strawberry shartcake (San Te), Saturday, 15 January 2011 16:33 (thirteen years ago) link

which also included an eyerolling quote from Waka where he says he is not a lyrical rapper because he is a Southern rapper. (mutually exclusive? nah)

strawberry shartcake (San Te), Saturday, 15 January 2011 16:33 (thirteen years ago) link

xpost i mean, i know like "It Takes Two" and "Children's Story" and "The Choice Is Yours (Revisited)" still work and shit, but if i'm gonna go full-on wedding dj, i might as well just put "Billie Jean" on an ipod and shoot myself in the mouth.

I Lost A COGHdrop in His Pato (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 15 January 2011 16:34 (thirteen years ago) link

All night dude with booze-breath kept coming up to me like "You know would get this crowd wet? Is if you played "north carolina, take your shirt of and spin it like a helicopter"

I Lost A COGHdrop in His Pato (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 15 January 2011 16:36 (thirteen years ago) link

I would dance to Children's Story! not Petey Pablo tho

pretty much every producer ever has that gripe/defense, but they don't STOP making beats that sound like their signature hit and offering them to artists along with their attempts at more creative or varied sounds

some dude, Saturday, 15 January 2011 16:36 (thirteen years ago) link

true, though I think that's cuz he wants to close the sale. he claims he sent over 40 to Rick Ross.

strawberry shartcake (San Te), Saturday, 15 January 2011 16:39 (thirteen years ago) link

that's what i mean. guys like Bangladesh kinda try to have their cake and eat it too by complaining that every artist wants an "A Milli" beat and pointing out that they're capable of something different, but still go ahead and provide what people want from them to keep their career going.
