mtv jams is playing a block of young dro videos because it's his birthday <3 <3 <3

I want to like that G-Side more than i do. The drums don't hit hard enough or something,

Number None, Saturday, 15 January 2011 19:32 (thirteen years ago) link

I had to listen to the G-Side again to articulate exactly why I don't like it. Like around 2003/2004 the granola Talib is that's occasionally endorsed by Jay/Yeezy street-rap dudes moved from that Jurassic 5 "I live/breathe/eat/sleep/shit hip-hop" To this post-Little Brother Stuart Smalley daily affirmations of "we worked so hard and all the critics said we couldn't make it but we were out there hustling and grinding and now... we're here." This album sounds like a total parody of that.

And compounded by the fact that the beats are completely unfunky and muted and like basically more illwave woosh than hip-hop—the same vibe as Big K.R.I.T. or Toomp but without the actual beat to anchor it. I didn't know what else to expect by some crew who samples Beach House.

i can get the rappers criticism, but the beats ??? WTF ????

shoulder lean, rubberband banks, top back remix, on fire, freeze me?

J0rdan S., Saturday, 15 January 2011 22:26 (thirteen years ago) link

"I Don't Know Y'all" :/

flutes & fucking mexican death horns (The Reverend), Saturday, 15 January 2011 23:07 (thirteen years ago) link

also "Ain't I" and "Take Off" and "Bring It Back"

"I Don't Know Y'all" isn't a great song but it's one of the best rap videos of the past couple years

some dude, Saturday, 15 January 2011 23:17 (thirteen years ago) link

Timbaland Thursdays kicks off with a Missy collabo. Sounds like 2004.

I twittered yesterday saying I was rinsing Tommy Wright III in the office and he just twittered at me asking me what that means.

75% pleased. 25% worried.

Yeah that fiend tape is pretty great. It made me want to revisit his post no limit albums which are pretty solid.
& of course "street life" is classic, probably the album that best represents new orleans rap music.

sisilafami, Sunday, 16 January 2011 00:20 (thirteen years ago) link

new snoop single is more R&B than rap but its really good

btw guys i have spent the week deciding i am going to do one of those 'review every song' blogs with the wu-tang* and... eek, these guys have been fucking prolific these past 20. i'm still trying to make a full list of things to find, let alone got around to finding it all. will post the list by the end of the week to see if you goons can notice anything i'm missing and maybe help me track some stuff down.

*kinda wanna go into all the shaolin, and have started adding kung fu to my lovefilm list and reading wiki pages about supreme mathematics etc.

"jobs" (a hoy hoy), Monday, 17 January 2011 13:08 (thirteen years ago) link

Kung fu movies are slightly addictive...hence my current username.

five deadly venoms (San Te), Monday, 17 January 2011 13:44 (thirteen years ago) link

this list has led me to find out that noreaga put an album called 's.o.r.e', presumably a sequel to cam'ron's cult classic i.b.s.

old but i am so in love with "a real feeling" by the jacka, off the street album mixtape which deej had suggested to me

just sayin, Monday, 17 January 2011 20:05 (thirteen years ago) link

nice little detail in the mix of the song "no future" by jacka

"knock you out with my left
take your life with my right"

^on that line they hard pan the words "left" and "right", cool sonic detail that you don't see enough of in rap, kicks the shit out of the supposedly "great" muddy, flat-sounding shit like the new kanye that is overpraised as great production

dj plain ole m@tt (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 17 January 2011 20:07 (thirteen years ago) link

overall, jacka is really great in a way that doesn't call much attention to itself

dj plain ole m@tt (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 17 January 2011 20:19 (thirteen years ago) link

"fed up" has jazz flute that reminds me of ron burgandy :)

i recommend 'the jack artist' next m@tt
