can't wait to hear a non-radio rip of that mystikal song

fruit of the goon (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:35 (thirteen years ago) link

the wiz is really good -- would be dope on an album, not sure how it would go as a single

it reminds me of "pretty girl rock" lol

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:37 (thirteen years ago) link

new max b is great deej

smang a goon (get it on) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:54 (thirteen years ago) link

thats not 'new' in that hes still in jail fyi ... i just got excited abt the prospect of him getting out this year (dunno how he can predict that his appeal will go through so quickly??)

tuomascratch beat (deej), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:56 (thirteen years ago) link

i don't know man that Wiz song is catchy as fuck. seems like he's just got that touch. who would have thought b&y would ever have been a crossover hit?

there are so many little tunes in it to hook into. sometimes it's just like a bar or two

"who would have thought b&y would ever have been a crossover hit? "

tbh was not very surprised by this at all

tuomascratch beat (deej), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:22 (thirteen years ago) link

surprised by how big it got, sure -- wasnt expecting top 5 in this climate for rap -- but its further proof that there are more marketing/access issues w/ rap not charting than aesthetic ones imo

tuomascratch beat (deej), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:23 (thirteen years ago) link

reeeeeeeaaaaaalllllllly???????????

surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:30 (thirteen years ago) link

the steelers winning the superbowl is gonna take that song to a new level too

smang a goon (get it on) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:31 (thirteen years ago) link

i guess the Stargate thing could have been a tipoff, but other than that anything else pointing to that song successfully crossing over is complete 20/20 hindsight etc

Thread in trib_Ote of wiz khalifa's alice deejay-sampling 'say yeah'

wish this was more of a smoking gun
i also said i thought it was gonna be a hit when i UL'd it **elsewhere** but cant rlly prove that

tuomascratch beat (deej), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:39 (thirteen years ago) link

like do Wiz fans like "Black And Yellow" or just kind of tolerate it? that shit is garbage.

circumstantial ill agree. i need to start declaring future hits out the gate

tuomascratch beat (deej), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:41 (thirteen years ago) link

black & yellow is catchy as shit -- its exactly why its getting covered by rappers all over right now

― j. sargent & lil k3v (deej), Thursday, October 21, 2010 11:53 PM (3 months ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

maybe this is too late to be considered prescient. but i did think it was catchy & great pretty early on

tuomascratch beat (deej), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:42 (thirteen years ago) link

it's not just a "hit"

it's very possibly going to be the NUMBER ONE SONG in the country or at least 2nd-4th

that's a big surprise

surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:44 (thirteen years ago) link

but yeah i see you believed in its potential

surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:44 (thirteen years ago) link

Is there anything else in this seeming mini-genre of rap vets going over kind of low-key beats?

I'm getting this vibe from the Fiend tape, and definitely from "Marcberg" and "Everything's Berri." Maybe the Pilot Talk albums--but not quite. Precursors might be the GZA/Muggs Grandmasters project and Prodigy's "Return of the Mac."

President Keyes, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 23:03 (thirteen years ago) link

prodigy's feels diff to me cuz alchemist is a lil too showy to be consider 'low key', and stuff like 'mac 10 handle' is a classic break, 'new york shit' was out & out extroverted, but yeah otherwise im w/ you that this is an interesting direction / grouping for these artists ...

keyes maybe check out shabazz palaces if u haven't, it's kinda more maximal beatwise i suspect but i feel like it cld be bracketed with the ones u mention in the sense of old guys quietly making personal albums

zvookster, Thursday, 27 January 2011 03:38 (thirteen years ago) link
