is there any reason why sideways doesn't exist?

iatee, Tuesday, 1 February 2011 02:58 (thirteen years ago) link

that would be my vote anyway cause we usually just leave it on the toilet ...but I mean like, an actual pole sticking up like a paper towl thing...I dunno, it could be some sort of compromise for the two warring sides

also diagonal could exist - in theory.

iatee, Tuesday, 1 February 2011 03:01 (thirteen years ago) link

We don't have a toilet roll holder so we just leave it lying around (except when 'er indoors puts it in the fucking cupboard and I have to lick my own arse clean)

lol this is the most pointless poll since the seminal "which do you hate more: putting dishes in the dishwasher OR taking them out -- btw i'm a privileged white person that thinks about such things"

I like how the second cat looks to be keeping watch while the ringleader commits the carnage.

Hi,

Under, means you can tear off with one hand.

stop that.

Mark G, Tuesday, 1 February 2011 09:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Over, but if I accidentally put it on the holder going under on first attempt I don't usually care enough to fix it.

The exception is if you have one of the holders with the flappy lid which holds the paper down, cz they only work if it goes under. (Which is kind of counterintuitive, because you think "it pushes down on the TOP, so if it goes over, the pressure will help you tear a sheet off" but no, it just stops it rolling smoothly and then the angle is wrong for the tear)

cellular nekomata (a passing spacecadet), Tuesday, 1 February 2011 10:09 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't know about other people, but I can tear over with one hand too. But what does it matter, unless you actually only have one hand?

Reaching over with both hands, have to swivel on seat...

Mark G, Tuesday, 1 February 2011 10:18 (thirteen years ago) link

Depends on where the roll is located, no?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 1 February 2011 10:22 (thirteen years ago) link

Over, very definitely. And I will fix it if someone leaves the roll the wrong way.

I think public restrooms have got this right - sideways

dayo, Tuesday, 1 February 2011 10:55 (thirteen years ago) link

also what's up with bathrooms in people's houses where the holder is located on the same wall the back of the toilet is facing - you have to reach alllll the way behind, possibly losing seat-to-flesh contact, just to get at it

dayo, Tuesday, 1 February 2011 10:56 (thirteen years ago) link

xp sideways facing or sideways away?

hoisin crispy mubaduck (ledge), Tuesday, 1 February 2011 10:57 (thirteen years ago) link

Or even on the door? lean alll-the-way-forward, and fall off the seat restricted by yr trousers onto the floor!

That never happened to me tho.

Mark G, Tuesday, 1 February 2011 10:57 (thirteen years ago) link

I can't even begin to visualize that xp

dayo, Tuesday, 1 February 2011 10:59 (thirteen years ago) link

anyway what really provokes my irrational anger are the giant metal toilet roll capsules, with a serrated edge for tearing off which never works, instead the paper rips higher up inside and then you have to reach inside and spin the roll round searching for the end like a giant roll of sellotape.

hoisin crispy mubaduck (ledge), Tuesday, 1 February 2011 11:11 (thirteen years ago) link

It's good practice.

What for, I can't say.

It would appear that ilxors are abnormally normal in this category.

Aimless, Monday, 14 February 2011 04:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Didn't see this in time to vote, but it's always under for me, definitely. Makes it easy to snap off a portion without unravelling half the roll. "Wrong" it may be, but that's just the kind of disgusting savage I am.

(Tie my shoelaces wrong too - been using the "bunny ears" method since I was six.)

I missed this poll, but you put the paper over the roll, you fucking freaks.

I didn't know there was some other method besides "bunny ears"! How does this other method work?

Rabbit runs around the tree and into the hole, I think.

Under, if you don't want your children and/or cats to play spin the roll and unwrap the whole thing.

Surprisingly, though I am a dyed in the wool "over" man and long time cat owner, none of my cats have ever played with the TP roll.

Wow, is "bunny ears"/two loops the default method in Finland? That's cool!

What I'm struggling to comprehend is that the two methods produce identical knots... this doesn't seem right, but I'm quite tired

the most cuddlesome bug that ever was borned (James Morrison), Monday, 14 February 2011 23:37 (thirteen years ago) link

I think the reason the knots end up the same is because the only difference is that the loop is formed separately (earlier) for the bunny rather than being formed when pushed through the other lace.

I've been a bunny all my life too; it seems like it's easier to get the loops the same size this way.

I would put that on the list of things that are knot humble to do.

Peter Pepsi (Abbbottt), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 01:59 (thirteen years ago) link

I eventually learned the popular method, and can employ it with no problem. But why should I bother, considering it takes me like 20 seconds, when I can do it the other way in half the time?
