I love BC now thanks to the Shabazz Palaces eps

I superficially enjoyed the Shabazz Palaces stuff but didn't get into it too heavily, seemed like they needed more focus? I should probably go back and relisten though.

I only ever heard the first track on Blowout Comb but that track was hot enough to make me consider voting for it over Reachin'

you said that 11 months ago. i respectfully suggest that you listen to the whole album, it's pretty consistent.

I think the Rev is otm. Blow Out Comb is classic.

Blowout better for all the reasons cited (by those who agree of course). Great record, less corny for sure.

Blowout Comb is one of those records that only makes sense played quietly late at night.

I can see that, but for me it's totally tied into the Summer of '95. Driving around in friends' cars from skate spot to skate spot, bumping this album and whatever else was featured in 411 Video Magazine episodes, getting high for the 1st times...

the whole way the samples and drum loops and live performances are blended on this record, the guitar solo on that track too (I forget if it's live or a sample). Every song so good, the only one that drags even a little for me is Art of Easing but even that one is solid. Also I love records where the songs are similar tempos and just flow from one into the next

I think the guitar solo is live. I think the fender rhodes is live, too.

So hopefully everyone that loves Digable Planets knows that Ishmael Butler has been doing amazing work (often the equal of 'Blowout Comb') as Shabazz Palaces for the last decade.

But his new project Knife Knights may be (to my tastes) the best thing he's ever done, and their album '1 Time Mirage' is out today:

The cover is very retro, but musically I'd say the music is post-everything in the best possible way, pulling sounds and vibes of the 70s funk, 80s R&B and boogie, 90s "golden age" hip hop, and a contemporary woozy/dubby/weird feeling. Really exciting work.

Pre-ordered before I listened. Cancelled my order after previewing. Sounds terrible to me. The Erik Blood love in Seattle is baffling.

yeah this wasnt great to me. a few interesting ideas and twists but overall just sounds like some experiments that never form.

wasn't gonna say anything to dampen the enthusiasm but yeah very unfocused. as are the Shabazz albums after the 1st one.

well, i turned it off after four or five tracks.

Ha oh well, not everything is for everyone. It's definitely loose and rough, but honestly that's what I like about it. I will say--the tracks I like best are toward the middle/end.
