delius and blow away are sooo romantic and gorgeous.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 14:06 (fifteen years ago) link

not sure if anything here stacks up quite to anything on the dreaming or HoL but "breathing" is def. one of my favorite apocalypse songs

impudent harlot, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 14:28 (fifteen years ago) link

the way it swells with the chorus at the end

Surmounter, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:52 (fifteen years ago) link

Alright, alright, I'm gonna rip this to my iPod in a sec, but it really is one of my least fave Kate albums.

Bimble, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:54 (fifteen years ago) link

anyone who likes the sensual world better than never for ever is just wrong. sorry b <3

Surmounter, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:55 (fifteen years ago) link

Ha!!! Actually I was just thinking that! I was like "this is my least fave album - oh wait um...oh yeah Sensual World is my least fave..." hahahahaah

Bimble, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:56 (fifteen years ago) link

controversial opinion: i think this is better than hounds of love

velko, Thursday, 21 August 2008 17:01 (fifteen years ago) link

Ha! Ha! Ha...um. No.

Bimble, Thursday, 21 August 2008 17:04 (fifteen years ago) link

I'd actually concur with this being better than Hounds -- or at least I've listened it to it much more. Many great songs on this, and I'm not sure I can pick just one standout.

Dan Peterson, Thursday, 21 August 2008 17:13 (fifteen years ago) link

This is a great album. There's some love. I'm voting for "All We Ever Look For," which I find frighteningly insightful in its simplicity.

My other favorites are: Babooshka, Infant Kiss (which I thnk might have a thread devoted to it somewhere here), Army Dreamer, and Breathing. Maybe Wedding List and Violin, although I used to like them more.

Not sure I agree at all that this works best as an album. I think the best tracks stand on their own fairly well and I'm not convinced my least favorite tracks really add anything.

_Rockist__Scientist_, Thursday, 21 August 2008 17:14 (fifteen years ago) link

"Insightful" isn't really the word I want either, but I think it cuts to the core of life (dare I say it). Lyrically it's an instance of where Kate Bush reminds me of Neil Young's best moments (lyrically): this ability to simply state something sort of obvious and yet have it carry a lot of punch. (I prefer Neil Young's lyrics when he's being abstract and direct to when he's indulging in concrete fantasies.)

_Rockist__Scientist_, Thursday, 21 August 2008 17:17 (fifteen years ago) link

The Sensual World is a great album, I've never understood the criticism of it. factor in the b-sides and it's even better.

akm, Thursday, 21 August 2008 17:21 (fifteen years ago) link

yea all we ever look for is really poignant, in a simple way. also just arranged so beautifully. whatever that guitar thing is

Surmounter, Thursday, 21 August 2008 17:22 (fifteen years ago) link

the production on the sensual world sometimes makes me want to gag, and while it has some amazing tracks, some are so overwrought and unlistenable (love and anger)

Surmounter, Thursday, 21 August 2008 17:23 (fifteen years ago) link

And Rockist mentions Neil Young, just as I did on the Radiohead thread. I love it. Alright, alright, I'm going to put this album on my iPod right now.

I can tell you though right away though, that Army Dreamers is my fave. Sorry.

Bimble, Thursday, 21 August 2008 17:27 (fifteen years ago) link

I find that interesting that you have that problem with the production, Surmounter. I never really gave much thought to the production on that, but you may be correct.

Bimble, Thursday, 21 August 2008 17:28 (fifteen years ago) link

i find it noisy, clunky and distorted.

Surmounter, Thursday, 21 August 2008 17:34 (fifteen years ago) link

but obviously the great tracks are o_O

Surmounter, Thursday, 21 August 2008 17:35 (fifteen years ago) link

1. Delius
2. Egypt
3. everything else

zaxxon25, Thursday, 21 August 2008 18:53 (fifteen years ago) link

I PUT IT ON THE WEDDING LIST

cutty, Thursday, 21 August 2008 18:56 (fifteen years ago) link

the chorus at the end of that song is FUCKING AMAZING AS WELL

Surmounter, Thursday, 21 August 2008 18:57 (fifteen years ago) link

The Infant Kiss for me. And the French language version, L'Baiser Enfant, is just peachy too.

Rinfy63, Friday, 22 August 2008 22:15 (fifteen years ago) link

Night Scented Stock!

It's the key to the Infant Kiss through Breathing chunk that I've been listening to every day lately.

But for real, I can't choose between Egypt, Infant Kiss, and Breathing. I'll have to think about this for a day or two.

Bus Driver Stu, Friday, 22 August 2008 23:02 (fifteen years ago) link

"Army Dreamers" you contrarian mothers.

One of my fave KB albums. "Blow Away" is especially gorgeous and so I voted for it. Hard to pick just one on here, though!

Capitaine Jay Vee, Saturday, 23 August 2008 14:52 (fifteen years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Saturday, 23 August 2008 23:01 (fifteen years ago) link

Here's probably the best Never For Ever-related video, "Egypt" from the Christmas special. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvA96fTftNU

And here's Wedding List from the same special http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7-DKGAeRgs

All we ever look for was robbed. Some days I would say this is the best Bush album

kolakube (Ross), Sunday, 24 December 2017 14:23 (six years ago) link

Sync night scented stock with blow away bill for some bonus harmonies. Seriously

kolakube (Ross), Sunday, 24 December 2017 14:26 (six years ago) link

wedding list also robbed

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Sunday, 24 December 2017 15:20 (six years ago) link

how did Breathing not win this

ufo, Sunday, 24 December 2017 15:32 (six years ago) link

0 votes for wedding list makes as much sense as a screen door on a submarine

kolakube (Ross), Sunday, 24 December 2017 16:14 (six years ago) link

Maybe I couldn't imagine anyone else writing Army Dreamers, but All We Ever Looked For is even more distinctively Kate. Absolutely can't imagine anyone else writing/recording anything close to that (prior to her doing so anyway).

"Blow Away."

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 28 December 2017 03:41 (six years ago) link

love the sonic details in this album, like the suppressed choir from hell on "Egypt", or the radio chatter on "Breathing" and the voice saying "don't let go" in collision with her "let go" vocal on the infant kiss. Bush was more foreground in the production and this was a transitional album to the same sonic signifiers and tendency towards sonic experiments she would use on "the dreaming" and "the hounds of love" and further.

kolakube (Ross), Thursday, 28 December 2017 04:13 (six years ago) link

feel like what sets this record apart is it feels like the first expansion on the sonic ideas she may have initiated on tracks like "moving" (kick inside) without the laser-eye experimentation of "dreaming" or honing back to commercial whims on "Hounds of Love". and it's a good set of songs. the end

kolakube (Ross), Thursday, 28 December 2017 04:24 (six years ago) link

is that how night scented stock came to be? were those background vocals meant to be used on blow away?

akm, Thursday, 28 December 2017 19:07 (six years ago) link

Not sure the story tbh akm but it's a cool detail!
