Im not too happy with the color films Ive tried so far tho

I do probably 1 roll of B&W for every 6 in color. I like Friedlander a lot and get inspired, but then what if I'm walking around and see this:

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5169/5374162966_842c11399b.jpg

and have B&W loaded in my camera? Disaster!

I develop B&W myself so it saves money - after the initial investment in equipment it comes out to like, 5-10 cents worth of chemicals per roll

Neu! romancer (dayo), Saturday, 26 February 2011 04:09 (thirteen years ago) link

Ah there's that. I've never set foot in a darkroom myself. My main concern is getting good scans from my lab (the resolution is great, but sometimes the contrast is too high; we're working on that).

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Saturday, 26 February 2011 04:27 (thirteen years ago) link

you don't need a darkroom to develop

re: B&W vs shooting color - one reason is that color negs will (most likely) start to fade in a couple of decades, B&W negatives are about as archival as archival gets. Less relevant in the days of digital, when our grandkids are going to find an old external drive in our shit and not have any knowledge of what it is, no way to hook it up to their holographic computers and most likely no way to read the files anyway. But maybe that's a good reason to keep a camera loaded with Tri-X as well.

Every B&W films has a specific look to it (the grain structure, the way they respond to different wavelengths of light, etc.) that isn't really obtainable by converting color (neg, slide or digital) in post.

DAYO HAVE YOU SEEN THAT KODACHROME YET

 (gr8080), Friday, 2 September 2011 16:43 (twelve years ago) link

yeah I cut and sleeved it but I didn't get a chance to scan it yet

dayo, Friday, 2 September 2011 17:04 (twelve years ago) link

would like to get a dedicated 35mm scanner for kodachrome since it's hard to scan. but dunno when that will be!

dayo, Friday, 2 September 2011 17:05 (twelve years ago) link

the exposures look okay just from eyeballing it - I was p worried and bracketed, but I think I'll get some usable shots

dayo, Friday, 2 September 2011 17:05 (twelve years ago) link

did you even consider paying dwayne's to scan them? even if they're shitty scans, you'd have something, and can get the good ones scanned later

 (gr8080), Friday, 2 September 2011 17:08 (twelve years ago) link

I had dwayne's scan one roll as a 'test' and my home scanner (epson v500) did a better job!

dayo, Friday, 2 September 2011 17:10 (twelve years ago) link

they were also really curly from being in a tube for 6 months so they're flattening under a box atm

dayo, Friday, 2 September 2011 17:10 (twelve years ago) link

My last roll of Kodachrome was a total dud. Too much pressure!
I'll be curious to know what kind of success you have with scanning your rolls. My lab scans from Dwayne's were baaaad, and my home scans are were little difficult, as it turns out. But as I said, it wasn't a great roll so I'm not too concerned! Using a Plustek, btw. Which I love, but I think it's maybe just a little harder to scan Kodachrome.

just want to say i'm following your screencaps thread but i'm reluctant to say anything because it'll break up the flow.

thread should be read only imo

haha thanks! btw some stylesheets automatically resize images but the originals should all be either 720 or 1080p, view in separate tab etc, set as background, do whatever

my thread of screencaps

乒乓, Friday, 18 January 2013 18:29 (eleven years ago) link

i watched kore-eda's nobody knows a couple of weeks ago & wrote down the screentimes of all of these close ups he shot of usually mouths and hands, the kids in the films, it's so beautifully photographed, i wish i could muscle in on the thread, but unfortunately nobody knows is gone, now, & i didn't get around to it. i like seeing those stray images from movies though, like playing along at home

Wishing I still had the motivation to continue my thread of screencaps ; (

Might never do anything with those Kodachromes I shot. Not until I get a better scanner at least

markers, Sunday, 1 June 2014 14:07 (nine years ago) link

i'm not kidding, either. she's using an iphone, so it would make sense, but i'm not sure about the placement of the remote, and i guess they could be those more expensive things

markers, Sunday, 1 June 2014 14:08 (nine years ago) link

Could be just the stock iPhone earbuds

, Sunday, 1 June 2014 17:51 (nine years ago) link

I don't think the remote placement varies between the models

, Sunday, 1 June 2014 17:51 (nine years ago) link

Looks like the stock ones that came with my iPhone 5, if that helps.
